James Driscoll and Sara Laufer in A 1940s Radio Christmas CarolThere are some delightful moments in Quad City Music Guild’s holiday production A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol, including composer David Wohl’s fantastic arrangements of classic carols, and inspired performances by some of the cast members portraying radio actors. When neither of these elements are present, there’s also scenic designer Harold Truitt’s layered, multi-level set with a plethora of pleasing décor, as well as costume designer Heidi Pedersen’s impeccably-tailored period ensembles. It also boasts the fun of watching several local acting dynamos share the stage together.

Sturdy with Fringe on Top: "Oklahoma!", at the Prospect Park Auditorium through August 17

Oklahoma!'s Jen Sondgeroth and David M. MillerIf you’re planning to see Quad City Music Guild’s Oklahoma!, I’d recommend getting to the theatre at least 10 minutes before the presentation begins. Those buying – or hoping to buy – tickets at the door should certainly arrive earlier than that; Friday’s opening-night performance was already nearly sold out, and I imagine word-of-mouth will make the musical’s second weekend equally jam-packed. But 10 minutes seems like an appropriate amount of time to take in this production’s absolute beauty of a set, and besides, you might find yourself forgetting about the set once the cast shows up and gives you even more wonderful things to look at.

Delta Nu Attitude: "Legally Blonde: The Musical," at the Prospect Park Auditorium through July 20

Autumn Loose, Liv Lyman, Lauren VanSpeybroeck, and Becca Meumann Johnson in Legally Blonde: The MusicalLegally Blonde: The Musical is, of course, based on the 2001 hit starring Reese Witherspoon, a movie that led to a rather woebegone sequel in 2003’s Legally Blonde: Red, White, & Blonde. Yet while watching the original film’s stage version on Thursday, I felt that Red, White, & Blonde also would’ve been a fitting title for Quad City Music Guild’s terrifically peppy new presentation, considering that this solo-star-driven show came off, instead, as pretty wonderfully democratic.

Lauren VanSpeybroeck, courtesy of Nick West PhotographyAs with many things in life, it can be blamed on a friendly purple dinosaur.

“I used to be obsessed with Barney,” says area actor Lauren VanSpeybroeck of her pre-school interest in performing. “I always used to pretend I was on Barney [& Friends], so I guess that’s where it started. And then I would see, say, The Wizard of Oz or something, and for that week, I would be Dorothy Gale from Kansas. My mom would take me to the grocery store and people would say, ‘Oh, you’re so cute – what’s your name?’ ‘Dorothy Gale from Kansas.’

“That,” says VanSpeybroeck with a laugh, “was probably when my mom was like, ‘Hmmm ... maybe she wants to play characters ... ?’”
