Sturdy with Fringe on Top: "Oklahoma!", at the Prospect Park Auditorium through August 17

Oklahoma!'s Jen Sondgeroth and David M. MillerIf you’re planning to see Quad City Music Guild’s Oklahoma!, I’d recommend getting to the theatre at least 10 minutes before the presentation begins. Those buying – or hoping to buy – tickets at the door should certainly arrive earlier than that; Friday’s opening-night performance was already nearly sold out, and I imagine word-of-mouth will make the musical’s second weekend equally jam-packed. But 10 minutes seems like an appropriate amount of time to take in this production’s absolute beauty of a set, and besides, you might find yourself forgetting about the set once the cast shows up and gives you even more wonderful things to look at.

Into the WoodsInto the Woods (August 10 - 12, 2007): The Green Room's debut production was Stephen Sondheim's and James Lapine's fairy-tale musical, and many of its cast members had previously worked with director Derek Bertelsen (also the venue's Executive Director) and music director Tyson Danner (the Artistic Director) in the pair's previous, fund-raising performances for the Children's Therapy Center of the Quad Cities: 2005's Ragtime and 2006's The Secret Garden. Both vividly remember opening night.

Derek: It smelled like fresh paint.

Tyson: It did. We painted that morning.

Sarah Ulloa and Ryan Westwood in john and jenI hadn't heard of the two-person musical john & jen until it popped up on St. Ambrose University's schedule of studio-theatre productions for the 2006-7 season, as a project for director Scott Peake and music director Tyson Danner. I'm guessing a lot of you hadn't, either.

Since St. Ambrose University’s production of Urinetown at the Galvin Fine Arts Center has already closed, there’s probably not much point in a review. So consider this a thank-you note instead. I had more fun at the school’s production of this 2001 musical comedy than I have at nearly any other entertainment I’ve been to over the past few months. The show was terrifically staged and, almost across the board, vibrantly performed, but most inspiring of all, the audience was truly alive to it; Urinetown smashes the understood conventions of musical theatre to smithereens, and the Friday night crowd appeared positively delighted that it did. The show was a risk, and one that paid off big time.
