Robert Redford and Nick Nolte in A Walk in the WoodsA WALK IN THE WOODS

Based on a widely adored nonfiction from 1998, A Walk in the Woods finds Robert Redford’s Bill Bryson (the book’s author) and Nick Nolte’s Stephen Katz embarking on a months-long trek along the Appalachian Trail, and from his first moments here, you fear for the latter’s health. By which I mean you fear for Nolte’s health. Because based on the 74-year-old’s initial appearance – hauling his substantial frame out of an airplane seemingly half his size, his face nearly purple from the effort – and that strained, gravelly baritone that sounds like heavy rocks in a wood chipper, Nolte doesn’t appear at all capable of surviving this particular Walk. (It should go without saying that even though he’s finally starting to look his age, you don’t feel similar trepidation for 79-year-old Redford, given that his voice and hair – or “hair” – still suggest a man in his late 30s.)

Landry Bender, Kevin Hernandez, Max Records, and Jonah Hill in The SitterIn a rather perverse bit of scheduling, at least for me, last weekend brought with it the area release of exactly zero debuting films, while this past weekend delivered six ... on the same weekend, I should add, that I had a lengthy road trip out of town and appeared in four performances of a local stage production. But I’m not one to complain. Onward!

Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker in Smart PeopleSMART PEOPLE

This past Friday, a couple of friends and I were discussing the long-delayed return of new episodes of NBC's Thursday-night comedies - the unfailingly hysterical 30 Rock and The Office, the shrill, irritating My Name Is Earl, and Scrubs, a show I've occasionally endured when I was feeling too lazy to change the channel. One of my friends admitted that Scrubs has been off its game for quite a while, but said he sticks with it because, after seven seasons, he's become too invested in the actors and their characters to stop watching. I felt the same way during director Noam Murro's Smart People.

When it was announced that the Brew & View’s Devin Hansen, this spring, would open a similar theater, The Rocket, in the District of Rock Island’s long-defunct Capri Cinema, the reaction of Brew & View regulars was generally twofold: an emphatic “Hooray!” followed by a quick “Huh?” After all, the Capri stands not four blocks from the Brew & View, and one such venue in the District was already more than film fans should have hoped for.
