Nancy Teerlinck and Dana Skiles in IndependenceDirector Emmalee Moffitt’s Richmond Hill Barn Theatre production of Independence may be the first work I’ve seen in which the pacing is a problem because it’s too fast. It struck me, while watching Thursday night’s performance, that a lot of tension was lost due to the lack of awkward silences during verbal spats; Moffitt doesn’t allow several scenes to breathe, particularly whenever the play’s matriarch and her eldest daughter argue, and so they wind up playing like ordinary family squabbles, rather than the uncomfortable, dysfunctional altercations playwright Lee Blessing intended.

Stacy McKean Herrick, Nathan Johnson, Kady Patterson, Archie Williams, and Jackie Skiles in Funny ValentinesCharacter confusion makes for an enjoyable, lighthearted comedy in Richmond Hill Barn Theatre's current summer offering, Funny Valentines. And though the opening-night performance had a slow and somewhat shaky start in terms of line deliveries, the actors quickly settled into their roles and let their characters' quirks shine through.

Jason Platt and Stacy Herrick in Almost MaineGranted, it's only February. But after seeing the Richmond Hill Barn Theatre's Thursday-night presentation of Almost, Maine, I thought a reasonable case could already be made for actors Jessica Nicol and Chris White emerging as area theatre's most endearing romantic pairing for 2009. Although, to be fair, the accolade could just as easily go to Nicol and Almost, Maine co-star Jason Platt. Or to Platt and co-star Stacy Herrick. Or to Herrick and co-star Alex Klimkewicz. Or to White and Platt. Whichever.

West Side StoryI love making lists. Love it. And I get an annual charge out of composing "10 best"s for the Reader based on my movie-going experiences: 10 Best Films, 10 Best Guilty Pleasures, 10 Best Action Blockbusters Based on a Pre-Existing
Toy ... .

So when I started thinking about my forthcoming Year in Theatre recap a few weeks ago, I thought it might make for a fun change of pace to compose "best" lists for area stage productions.
