Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling in The Big ShortDuring my extended holiday stay in the Chicago area, I saw a fantastic movie, a sizable disappointment, and an utter clunker. But as Carol, Legend, and The Danish Girl aren’t currently playing at a theater near you (at least if you live in the Quad Cities region), let’s instead focus on the other fantastic movie, sizable disappointment, and utter clunker I saw.

MinionsMINIONS

The previews for the Despicable Me prequel-slash-spin-off Minions made me laugh out loud every single time I saw them ... the first dozen times I saw them. After the second dozen, though, I started to get a little nervous. By then, I had experienced roughly 72 collective minutes of these squat, yellow henchmen with their helium squawks and adorable bulging eyes (or, in some cases, eye), and my initially hearty laughter had been replaced by occasional grins and a smidge of irritation. Granted, I was only seeing three to five minutes of footage over and over, but would directors Kyle Balda’s and Pierre Coffin’s animated outing wind up feeling the same? Would a solid hour and a half of Minions, and Minions, be too much of a good thing? Answer: Not really. And also: Kind of.

producer/writer/director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and team members of Best Picture Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)Neil Patrick Harris, at the tail end of last night's Academy Awards ceremony, climaxed his hosting duties with the resolution to a magic trick he'd set up earlier in the evening. Much, much earlier in the evening.

Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo in FoxcatcherFOXCATCHER

Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher isn’t a horror movie, per se. There are no bogeymen, no cats jumping out from the shadows, and, with one crucial exception, very little bloodletting beyond that which could be incurred on a wrestling mat. Yet when I caught the film this weekend, it sure seemed like one, considering the collective gasp that greeted the climax’s simple yet surprising appearance of a handgun. Actually, it was more of a swallowed shriek than a gasp – the sort of involuntary sound you’d make if you were fearing the worst and the worst came, only far sooner, and scarier, than you were anticipating.

Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner, Elise or Zoey Vargas, Ferris Dorsey, and Ed Oxenbould in Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad DayFriday, October 10, 10:05 a.m.-ish: My latest quartet of screenings starts with an adaptation of the beloved children’s book Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. It’s a shame that the title has already eaten up about half my word count, because I now have far less space in which to rave about this surprisingly fantastic family comedy whose unforced cheerfulness is matched by its completely unexpected wit.
