Lou Diamond Phillips and Antonio Banderas in The 33THE 33

Even if you can’t recall the event’s salient details, you likely remember the Chilean mine disaster that led the international news cycle for weeks in 2010, and that has now inspired director Patricia Riggen’s The 33. But as this strong, heartfelt film’s tension is built almost entirely on those salient details, it’s hard to determine, in describing the story, exactly what about this five-year-old true tale should be considered a spoiler. Do you remember, for instance, how long the 33 miners were trapped before anyone even knew they were alive? How many days it took after that for rescue teams to excavate them? How many of the 33 actually perished underground?

Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in The InternTHE INTERN

Older audiences deserve comforting, pandering crap as much as everyone else, so I probably shouldn’t be too hard on The Intern, especially because, with Nora Ephron’s passing, writer/director Nancy Meyers is pretty much carrying the torch for Hollywood’s all-too-rare female-centric dramedies detailing the personal costs of Having It All. But I’m going to be hard on it anyway, given that Meyers’ mildly insulting sitcoms about strong, successful career women who are only truly fulfilled after Finding the Right Man are usually buoyed by ace performances (Something’s Gotta Give’s Diane Kaeaton and Jack Nicholson; It’s Complicated’s Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin), and this film just doesn’t have ’em.

Jake Weary and Maika Monroe in It FollowsIT FOLLOWS

Any horror fan who came of age with Halloween, Friday the 13th, and their many sequels knows the ironclad rule regarding imperiled teens: If they have sex, they’re gonna die. So maybe you’ll have to be of a certain generation – or have an affinity for a certain breed of shocker – to get the most from It Follows, writer/director David Robert Mitchell’s intensely witty, pretty damned scary tale of a young woman diagnosed with a literally murderous, and ambulatory, STD.

Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe: RetaliationG.I. JOE: RETALIATION

If you handed a box of crayons to a group of eight-year-olds with action figures, they’d probably come up with a more entertaining storyline for G.I. Joe: Retaliation than the one we’re stuck with, which is your standard blockbuster nonsense about a megalomaniac’s plan for world dominion and the crack team of well-armed, quip-ready hotshots attempting to thwart him. In a welcome surprise, though, director Jon M. Chu’s follow-up to 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is, unlike its forebear, quite a bit of zippy, throwaway fun, a fast-moving and happily unpretentious diversion with jokes, and good ones, obviously written specifically for viewers well over the age of eight.

The MuppetsEvery January, I share my numerical rankings of the 10 most enjoyable movies I saw during the previous year. I do not, however, share my numerical rankings of all the other titles I caught during those 12 months, as such a list would, I think, be hopelessly arbitrary, terribly self-indulgent, and something that only a person with too much time on his hands would attempt.

Let’s get cracking, shall we?
