Chris Castle and Tom Naab in A Christmas Survival GuideQuad City Music Guild’s A Christmas Survival Guide, with its sentiment, irreverence, and cheeky humor, is almost exactly my kind of holiday celebration. Wednesday night’s dress rehearsal – and the show was so finely polished that I hardly think it necessary to state that it was a dress rehearsal – had me smiling, chuckling, and itching to sing along with the familiar songs included in this musical revue.

Sarah Lounsberry in Peter PanQuad City Music Guild’s Thursday-night preview performance of Peter Pan – which, it should be stressed, was still technically a rehearsal – clocked in at roughly an hour and 55 minutes, making director Beth Marsoun’s presentation at least a half-hour shorter than any of the four other Peter Pans I’ve thus far seen on stage. This proved, at alternating times, to be both a very good thing and a rather unfortunate thing. But let’s start with the good.

Melissa Anderson Clark At Thursday's preview performance of Quad City Music Guild's Thoroughly Modern Millie, I seated myself in the third-to-last row of the Prospect Park theatre, yet even at that distance, I found myself distracted by an intense, nearly blinding illumination shining from center stage. It turns out, though, that this wasn't any kind of technical glitch; it was just Melissa Anderson Clark grinning at us.

"The Wizard of Oz" ensemble members About halfway through the overture for the Quad City Music Guild's preview performance of The Wizard of Oz, my friend, sporting a huge grin, turned to me and whispered, "I feel like I'm watching the movie." With the thrillingly familiar strains emanating from music director Valeree Pieper's splendid orchestra, I agreed completely, and it's fair to say that over the next two-and-three-quarters hours, that feeling almost never waned.
