David Turley and Creighton D. Olsen in Next FallA year-and-a-half after enjoying his performance in New Ground Theatre’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, I am glad to see David Turley on a Quad Cities stage again in the company's Next Fall. It was Turley's portrayals of John Hinckley in the Green Room Theatre’s 2008 Assassins and William Barfee in the Harrison Hilltop Theatre’s 2010 The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee that initially endeared me to his comedic deliveries. And I’m grateful to see him employ his skills as this new play's 40-year-old gay atheist Adam, a character performed with more subtlety than those aforementioned roles, but one that still employs Turley's amusing brand of dry, sarcastic, slightly dark humor.

Mitch Donahue, Alexander Robin Kass, Samantha Pauly, Kristin Gilbert, and Tristan Layne Tapscott in the Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse's Legally Blonde: The MusicalFor our third-annual conversation on the Year in Theatre, Thom White – the Reader’s chief theatre reviewer – and I thought we’d shake things up a bit. So instead of meeting for an hours-long breakfast to discuss the area stage scene, we met for an hours-long dinner to discuss the area stage scene.

And while I managed to keep things lively by spilling a completely full glass of water not 10 minutes after sitting down, we also managed to touch on many of the varied experiences that Thom (occasionally accompanied by his partner’s daughter Madison) and/or I had during another eventful year for fans of the theatre. Pack a lunch, sit back, and dive in ... .

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BeeThe Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightfully entertaining musical comedy that I wouldn’t mind seeing over and over again, as Friday’s performance of director Tommy Iafrate’s production was funny, touching, and energetic, serving as an exceptional rendering of the musical’s charm, wit, humor, and high level of enjoyability.

Tom Walljasper, Kristin Gilbert, and John Payonk in HairsprayThe Reader's chief theatre reviewer, Thom White, saw and wrote about 52 area stage productions in 2011. I saw 39 and reviewed 12. Obviously, during our second-annual breakfast chat on the Year in Theatre, there was a bit to talk about.

James Fairchild and David Turley in A Tuna ChristmasWhile I like David Turley’s work as a director – with this year’s Chicago at the District Theatre and Gypsy with Countryside Community Theatre among his most notable efforts – I’d like to see more of him on-stage. I was wowed by his John Hinckley Jr. in 2008’s Assassins at the Green Room Theatre, tickled pink by his William Barfee in 2010’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Harrison Hilltop Theatre, and amusingly intrigued by his Vladimir in that venue’s 2010 Waiting for Godot.
