Cara Chumbley, Lora Adams, Brad Hauskins, and Rachelle Walljasper in Things My Mother Taught MeAnother year of area stage productions has come and gone, and wanting to try something different this December, Reader theatre reviewer Thom White and I thought we’d bypass our traditional, end-of-year postmortem in favor of an alternate approach: requesting 100-words-or-fewer submissions from our readers on what people found particularly memorable about the 2013 stage scene. “It’ll be something new!” we thought. “It’ll be exciting! It’ll be filled with fresh voices that aren’t ours!” And, I must admit, we were dazzled with the overall response.

Well, “dazzled” may be overstating it.

Hmmm ... what’s the word I’m looking for ... ?

“Mortified,” maybe ... ?

Jared Svoboda, Tracy Pelzer-Timm, Pat Flaherty, and Susan Perrin-Sallak in Other Desert CitiesWhile leaving Friday’s performance of Other Desert Cities, a friend told me that he thought it was the best play he’d seen by New Ground Theatre, and I agreed that, if not the best, it is at least among the best productions by the local company. Director David Turley’s staging of playwright Jon Robin Baitz’s smart, realistic dialogue and intriguing storyline has a tremendous palpability to it, both in the family dynamics of those on-stage and in the tensions and emotions they feel.

the Les Miserables ensembleLes Misérables is an epic musical, and Countryside Community Theatre should be commended for its noble effort in staging the multi-layered, much-loved piece by composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer. Director David Turley and his cast treat the material with the respect it deserves. Friday night’s performance, however, was still riddled with problems, many of them of a technical nature.

Cray Sisters, Soul Sisters: "Crimes of the Heart," at the Village Theatre through February 10

Tracy Pelzer-Timm, Jenny Winn, and Kylie Jansen in Crimes of the HeartWhile Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart falls into too many theatrical traps – primarily, having major actions described rather than physically rendered on stage – the author avoids one of the most common by making her play's second act funnier and more interesting than its first. While I liked the first act of New Ground Theatre’s Saturday-evening production, I enjoyed its second half a lot more, laughing heartily with Henley’s characters as they cackled over serious subject matter such as their grandfather's lapsing into a coma.

Danielle Barnes, Mariah Thornton, and Dani Westhead in Freckleface Strawberry: The MusicalThe Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse and director Kimberly Furness have done it again, crafting a family production that’s charming and a whole lot of fun for both the kids and the adults in the audience. My partner’s nine-year-old daughter Madison and I enjoyed Friday’s performance of Freckleface Strawberry: The Musical immensely, even though neither of us is at all familiar with the children’s-book character the show is based on.
