Many cast members in the Prenzie Players’ current offering, Titus Andronicus, are at their best expressing physical and emotional pain. There’s Aaron E. Sullivan’s shift from utter despair to cackling insanity as the title character, Catie Osborn’s post-rape brokenness as his daughter Lavinia, and Jessica White’s shrieks as she watches her character’s son slaughtered. The desperation is so penetrating in its realism and sincerity that I was often uncomfortable during Friday night’s performance – which is to say that the production is shockingly effective at delivering the darkness of Shakespeare’s work. I walked away in awe.

The Reader's chief theatre reviewer, Thom White, saw and wrote about 52 area stage productions in 2011. I saw 39 and reviewed 12. Obviously, during our second-annual breakfast chat on the Year in Theatre, there was a bit to talk about.

There may be some of you who hear the title King Lear and, knowing only of the play’s reputation as the mack daddy of all Shakespeare tragedies, immediately presume that any evening production of the piece will last well into the next morning. Allow me, then, to quell your fears: Saturday’s Genesius Guild staging of the Bard’s opus began promptly at eight o’clock, and after the night’s presentation had concluded, I was back in my car by 10:55.

“I think it came from going to church,” says area actor Pat Flaherty of his childhood interest in theatre. “Because I’d go to church, and I’d see this guy who was holding everybody’s interest through the whole service. It was very dramatic – they’d light the candles and ring the bells and everything – and for a while I thought I wanted to be a priest because of that.

“It turned out I just wanted to be on stage.”

THOR

Prior to the film’s release, I wouldn’t have thought any director a worse candidate for helming the hugely budgeted comic-book adaptation Thor than Kenneth Branagh, that frequent interpreter of Shakespeare whose one foray into Hollywood-blockbuster(-wannabe) terrain was 1994’s monstrously terrible Frankenstein. In retrospect, I’m not sure any director would have proved a better choice. Two days after seeing Branagh’s grandly produced yet subtly frisky entertainment, I’m still a bit shocked at how strong the results are; against all logic, Thor’s director has successfully melded his movie’s wildly disparate elements into an action-packed thrill ride (in 3D!) that, incredibly, also manages to be emotionally satisfying, and oftentimes funny as hell.

There are moments of magic in the Prenzie Players’ Romeo & Juliet, beginning with the first words heard in the prologue: “Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene.” These lines are delivered in the midst of a sword fight that spreads across the acting space – the fighters freeze, ethereal music wafts in from above, and Adam Overberg delivers Shakespeare’s well-known introduction, setting the stage for this tale of ill-fated, star-crossed lovers. The moment is stunningly executed, and sets in motion an excitement for what’s to come.

JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER

Leave it to that great Socratic thinker Ozzy Osbourne, in a recent TV commercial, to ask the question that’s been on many a middle-aged mind of late: “What’s a Bieber?”

As we’ve come to annually expect, there was practically no end to the highlights from this past year in area theatre.

I’ve enjoyed every Prenzie Players production I’ve seen to date, but perhaps none more so than Pericles, Prince of Tyre. That’s actually odd to say, since William Shakespeare’s tale of the world's luckiest unlucky prince – a seafarer who really should just avoid the sea altogether – wouldn’t necessarily be called “fun.” Director Andy Koski and his cast, however, manage to find the humor in the script and bring it to the forefront, embellishing it and even adding quips of their own, and elicited lots of laughs from Saturday night’s audience.

Genesius Guild's Richard III is not what I expected. I sat down for Sunday night's Lincoln Park performance anticipating a well-done, respectfully somber production - something along the lines of a group oration with limited movement. What I saw instead was a dynamic show filled with remarkable performances and clever staging, and delivered with proper respect for the material.
