HulkHULK

There are scenes of sublime directorial craftsmanship and exquisite beauty in the latest Ang Lee film, which should surprise no one familiar with Lee’s oeuvre but might shock the masses lining up to see a Summer Blockbuster entitled Hulk.

Hugh Jackman in X2: X-Men UnitedX2: X-MEN UNITED

Most reviewers disliked the original X-Men, Bryan Singer’s Marvel Comics adaptation that earned money but little critical respect in the summer of 2000. I, on the other hand, loved the original, so much so that, three years later, it still merits regular rotation in my DVD player.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck in DaredevilDAREDEVIL

Though he tries mighty hard, Ben Affleck isn’t quite able to ruin Daredevil, Mark Steven Johnson’s screen adaptation of the Marvel comic. It’s gonna suck."

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Spider-ManSPIDER-MAN

Your enjoyment of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man adaptation will, I think, boil down to just how realistic you want your special effects to be. I imagine that even those who haven’t yet seen the film – and there must be at least three or four of you out there – will have seen the previews of our hero as he leaps across buildings and whooshes through downtown Manhattan, and they’re all most obviously computer-generated effects; I have friends who refuse to see the film because of how bored they already are of CGI in movies.

Tim Roth and Mark Wahlberg in Planet of the ApesPLANET OF THE APES

My guess is that Tim Burton’s “re-imagining” of Planet of the Apes will meet the same fate as 1999’s The Blair Witch Project and last year’s X-Men: It’ll stand as the most misunderstood, and least appreciated, blockbuster of the summer.
