Every holiday season, Toys for Tots donation boxes fill each of Ascentra Credit Union’s branches from Muscatine, Iowa to the Quad Cities and up to Clinton, Iowa.  It is a tradition at the credit union that has led their staff to support the organization by raising additional funds through organizing a bake sale and donating $5 to dress Casual for a Cause, then using the proceeds to go on a toy shopping spree.

State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald reminds Iowans to explore IAble accounts as a way for people living with disabilities to save for disability-related expenses and achieve a better life experience. Signed into Iowa law in 2015, IAble allows families the opportunity to plan for the future financial well-being of a loved one with a disability on a tax-deferred basis, without the individual losing eligibility for certain assistance programs, such as SSI or Medicaid.

Christian Care, a shelter for men experiencing homelessness in downtown Rock Island, was recently awarded a $20,000 grant from The Amy Helpenstell Foundation Fund at the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend.  This important award provides valuable support of key programs and services at Christian Care that help those struggling with homelessness and poverty in our community.

Impaired driving and pedestrian risk create a dangerous combination

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have become a major concern for American motorists who have been involved in a minor collision. According to new research from AAA, advanced systems such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and others, can cost twice as much to repair following a collision due to expensive sensors and their calibration requirements.

The TaxSlayer Center is currently in search of their 2018 Christmas tree to be displayed in the arena's circle drive throughout the holiday season. The tree will also be featured at the annual Lighting on the Commons Ceremony to be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018.

 Teen drivers increase the risk for everyone on the roadway, especially if they are bringing teen passengers along for the ride. New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that when a teen driver has only teen passengers in their vehicle, the fatality rate for all people involved in a crash increased 51 percent. In contrast, when older passengers (35 or older) ride with a teen driver, overall fatality rates in crashes decreased eight percent.
