"An Evening with Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives" at the University of Dubuque -- May 18.

Saturday, May 18, 8 p.m.

University of Dubuque's Heritage Center, 2255 Bennett Street, Dubuque IA

Known for his traditional style and eclectic combination of rockabilly, honkytonk, and traditional country music, a legendary talent brings his gifted ensemble to the University of Dubuque's Heritage Center in An Evening with Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, a May 18 event with the artist who has released more than 20 major label albums and scored platinum sales, hit singles, and just about every honor the industry could bestow along the way.

Professionally active since 1968, Stuart initially toured with Lester Flatt, and then in Johnny Cash's road band before beginning work as a solo artist in the early 1980s. His greatest commercial success came in the first half of the 1990s on MCA Records Nashville, and to date, Stuart has recorded more than 20 studio albums, charting in excess of 30 times on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. His highest chart entry is "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," a duet with Travis Tritt, and additional hits include “Hillbilly Rock,” “Little Things,” “Tempted,” and “Burn Me Down,” all of which made the top 10 on Billboard's U.S. Country chart. A Golden Globe nominee for his score to the 2000 film All the Pretty Horses, Stuart has also won five Grammy Awards out of 16 nominations, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Honors & Awards.. Known for his combination of rockabilly, country rock, and bluegrass music influences, his frequent collaborations and cover songs, and his distinctive stage dress, Stuart is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame.

In addition to his intimidating musical accomplishments, Stuart is famed for his extensive collection of country music memorabilia. Some of his collection was exhibited at the Tennessee State Museum in 2007 as Sparkle & Twang: Marty Stuart's American Musical Odyssey. The exhibit later appeared at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the Arkansas Statehouse Museum. In early 2018, Stuart co-curated, along with the Grammy Museum, an exhibit at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, titled Marty Stuart's Way Out West: A Country Music Odyssey. The exhibit highlighted the West Coast impact on country music, featuring items by artists including Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and Stuart himself. Many of the items in the exhibit came from the private collection of Stuart, including the last portrait of Cash taken by Stuart a mere four days before Cash passed away.

An Evening with Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives play the John & Alice Butler Hall of the University of Dubuque's Heritage Center on May 18, admission to the 8 p.m. concert event is $29-59, and more information and tickets are available by calling (563)585-7469 and visiting Dbq.edu/heritagecenter.
