U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representative Bruce Braley (D-IA) have announced that $451,290 has been secured for Scott Community College to construct a connector road from the south end of College Loop Drive to a second entrance at US 67. The funds will also be used to make intersection improvements to US 67. A second route is important to the college for safety as well as to reduce congestion.
The Iowa State Department of Public Health has received a $492,700 grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for rural-health and heart-disease initiatives. This funding will be used by the State Office of Rural Health ($147,700) and the Iowa Heart Disease & Stroke Capacity Building Program ($345,000).
Christian Care's Domestic Violence Shelter recently received a $5,000 grant from the Duncan J. Cameron Family Foundation. The grant will be used for services and programs provided to women and children in residence at the Domestic Violence Shelter.
The millionth visitor to the Putnam Museum's IMAX theatre will receive prizes including unlimited IMAX movies for life, lifetime soda and popcorn, and a personalized seat in the theatre. A Paper-Cutting (Scherenschnitte) Workshop will be conducted by Keith Bonnstetter on Saturday, July 12, at the German American Heritage Center in downtown Davenport. There will be a session for children (ages 8 through 15) at 10 a.m. with a fee of $2 for supplies. The session for Adults (ages 16 and up) will be at 2 p.m. with the fee of $5 for supplies. The Quad Cities African American Museum - a new venture that proposes to exhibit the works of local and regional African American actors, musicians, writers, artists, educators, and other professionals - will celebrate the works of local TV pioneer Tim Moore from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on July 16 in the Community Room of the Rock Island Public Library, 401 19th Street. The drop-in event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.
College-bound students in need of additional financial assistance may qualify to receive two educational loans from the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend. The Rotary Club of Davenport Loan Fund and the Nabstedt Revolving College Loan Fund are available to residents of Scott County and worth up to $5,000. The Quad City Heritage League is establishing an annual award to recognize an individual who has made contributions of lasting significance toward the promotion and preservation of the Quad Cities' rich heritage. The deadline for nominations is September 15. Nominations must be submitted using the form from the Heritage League Web site (http://www.qcheritageleague.com).
The Quad City Flames have announced that the team is holding open tryouts for mascot performers beginning on July 16. The ideal candidate will be available for community appearances throughout the year and for home games from October through June. Tryouts will include an interview and two performance auditions. Ducks Unlimited has worked with its partners to restore wetlands in those areas currently affected by Midwestern flooding. The Living Lakes Initiative in Iowa and Minnesota was established in response to the recognized value of free-flowing rivers and shallow lake complexes. Regardless of their size, depth, and often ephemeral nature, wetlands in watersheds provide important functions such as flood storage, nutrient and sediment filtering, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunity.
