The Goldman family has donated six properties in the 1600 block of Second Avenue to Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation. Stanley and Ann Goldman, owners of Hyman's Furniture Store, were honored Friday for their contributions to the community, including the recent property donations. The properties, valued at nearly half a million dollars, are slated to become a business incubator and housing.

Organizers say that the United States Constitution and the founding principles of liberty and self-governance are under attack by federal legislators from both sides of the political aisle. The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity has launched the fifth-annual Innovate Illinois competition, designed to recognize high-growth businesses in Illinois that have launched or plan to launch an innovative product or service. Beginning on July 10, Iowa Public Radio (IPR) will be expanding its locally produced Triple-A music and jazz offerings on the Studio One network, creating a new rhythm-and-blues show hosted by Bob Dorr and adding jazz with Curt Snook, also heard on the IPR classical network. IPR will also bring back folk music with Karen Impola and national music programs including The Thistle & Shamrock, Mountain Stage, and etown. After learning of Birdies for Charity's shortfall of charitable funds, the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend made a $20,000 grant to help the organization and its 500 beneficiaries. On September 17, the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency will kick off the 2009-10 school year with an event featuring speaker Tony Wagner. Wagner has made appearances on the Today show, National Public Radio, and McNeil/Lehrer News Hour and has served as senior advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Wagner will be discussing his latest book, The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don't Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need - & What We Can Do About It. Iowa State University Extension is offering farm-bill meetings focusing on the ACRE program on July 13 at 9:30 a.m. at the Scott County Farm Bureau Building (1721 East LeClaire Road in Eldridge), July 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Durant Community Center (606 Fifth Street in Durant), and July 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Muscatine County Fairgrounds (101 North Clay in West Liberty). Speakers will discuss the various provisions of the new farm bill, including the changes from the last farm bill and the forms for program eligibility. The meetings are free and do not require advance registration.
