Snowshoe With A Ranger Through Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

WEST BRANCH, IOWA? A park ranger will lead snowshoe hikes through Herbert Hoover National Historic Site at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, January 10 and 11, January 24 and 25, February 7 and 8, and February 21 and 22.


The one-hour "Snowshoe Through the Park" is suitable for ages 5 and up. The walk will begin, weather and trail conditions permitting, at Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum and will cover less than one mile through the tallgrass prairie. Participants must have sturdy boots, and should dress appropriately for the weather and bring water.


The park has some snowshoes to lend. Call (319) 643-2541 to reserve a pair. Participants borrowing snowshoes should arrive early to try on the snowshoes.

Lecture Series on Geology of the National Parks Continues at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– Dr. Richard Baker continues his series of lectures this winter about geology in our national parks with presentations on Wednesdays, November 12 (Zion and Bryce Canyon), January 28 (Isle Royale and Voyageurs), and March 25 (Glacier Bay and Kenai Fjords). The lectures are free and last about one hour. They begin at the visitor center of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site at 7:00 p.m.

The lecture series is offered in recognition of President Herbert Hoover's interests in geology and conservation. Dr. Baker is a professor emeritus in the Geoscience Department at University of Iowa. He completed his doctorate research at Yellowstone National Park. He has traveled to many of our national parks and has taught a course on them at the University of Iowa.

Ranger to Lead Family Campfire Program on West Branch Village Green

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– Join a national park ranger for an evening family campfire program at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site on Saturday, September 6. The program is free and begins at 7:30 p.m. The ranger will lead family activities and tell ghost stories around the fire.

The campfire program takes place on the village green at the intersection of Parkside Drive and Main Street in historic downtown West Branch.  Visitors and their families are welcome to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, and toasting sticks, marshmallows, and ingredients for s`mores.

Join A Park Ranger For A Tallgrass Prairie Walk

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– On Monday, September 1 a park ranger leads visitors through the reconstructed 81-acre tallgrass prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Join to learn how and why the National Park Service is reconstructing this endangered habitat as part of the landscape commemorating Herbert Hoover's life. The walks begin at the tallgrass prairie observation deck by the gravesite parking lot at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The walk is less than a mile and lasts about 60 minutes. Bring water, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent are also recommended.

Also on September 1, Laura Ingalls Wilder historian Sarah Uthoff will present "In the Kitchen with Laura" at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m inside Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. Admission to "In the Kitchen with Laura" is free with paid admission to the museum.

Presentation Showcases National Parks Established by the Hoover Administration

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– On Saturday, July 19 a park ranger discusses "Herbert Hoover's National Parks": special places like Arches, Isle Royale, George Washington Birthplace, Sunset Crater Volcano, and other national parks and monuments preserved by Herbert Hoover's administration. Upcoming Herbert Hoover National Historic Site events

Lecture Series on Geology of the National Parks Continues at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– Dr. Richard Baker continues his series of lectures about geology in our national parks with presentations on Acadia and Great Smoky Mountains (Wednesday, June 18 at 7 p.m.) and Mount Rainier and Crater Lake (Saturday, July 26 at 2 p.m.). The lectures take place at the visitor center, are free, and last about one hour.

Dr. Baker is a professor emeritus in the Geoscience Department at University of Iowa. He completed his doctorate research at Yellowstone National Park. He has traveled to many of our national parks and has taught a course on them at the University of Iowa. Dr. Baker's previous lectures at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site examined national parks as diverse as Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Hawaii Volcanoes, Everglades, and many others.

Free Summer Programs and Events at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– Herbert Hoover National Historic Site invites visitors to attend free ranger programs this summer.

Burt (June 5), folk blues duo Joe and Vicki Price (June 12), mariachi musicians Las Guitarras De Mexico (June 19), and contemporary country performer Danika Holmes featuring Jeb Hart (June 26).

On Saturday, June 21 and Monday, September 1, take the "Tallgrass Prairie Walk" to find out how and why the National Park Service is reconstructing this endangered habitat as part of the landscape commemorating Herbert Hoover's life. The walk begins at the Tallgrass Prairie Observation Deck (at the Gravesite Parking Lot) at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Take a walking tour of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. from July 9 through August 13.  A ranger leads you through the park's historic buildings: the Birthplace Cottage, Blacksmith Shop, Schoolhouse, and Friends Meetinghouse. The tour begins and ends at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in time for the 7 p.m. Wednesday movie.

Learn about "Herbert Hoover's National Parks" on Saturday, July 19. As President, Herbert Hoover's administration created a number of new national parks and monuments. Join a park ranger to learn about some of these special places. This indoor presentation takes place at 2 p.m. in the visitor center.

"Hoover's Hometown Days" on August 1 and 2 celebrates the life of Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States. Enjoy free family fun Friday night and all day Saturday with a variety of family entertainment, craft vendors and more! Saturday night, view a spectacular fireworks display accompanied with music by the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band. The celebration takes place throughout downtown West Branch. Free Concerts Continue This Spring in West Branch

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– Grab a friend and pack a picnic... because the music is lively and free! This year's "Music on the Village Green" kicks off with the award-winning West Branch High School Jazz Band on Monday, May 19.

Following the May 19 performance Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, in cooperation with Main Street West Branch, invites visitors to a series of special musical events each Thursday night in June.  The weekly performances feature bluesman Kevin "B.F." Burt (June 5), folk blues duo Joe and Vicki Price (June 12), mariachi musicians Las Guitarras De Mexico (June 19), and contemporary country performer Danika Holmes featuring Jeb Hart (June 26).

The concerts are free and begin at 7:00 p.m. at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, Iowa.

The outdoor concerts will take place on the village green at the intersection of Parkside Drive and Main Street in historic downtown West Branch.  The village green provides a classic small town setting in which to enjoy an evening of free entertainment.  There is ample parking nearby, and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or ground blankets. In inclement weather the performances will be moved to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, 210 Parkside Drive in West Branch.
