Let your member of congress know that this is unacceptable and they have the power to change that fact.

An early and documented diagnosis, when coupled with access to care planning services, leads to better outcomes for individuals with Alzheimer's as well as their caregivers. Health care providers rely on the documentation of a diagnosis to coordinate care and address complications in the management of other chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. The latest version of the HOPE for Alzheimer's Act was recently reintroduced in the 114th Congress. This vital legislation would increase access to information on care and support for newly diagnosed individuals and their families - providing essential support for those facing this devastating, debilitating disease. It would also ensure that an Alzheimer's or dementia diagnosis is documented in the individual's medical record.

Urge your member(s) of Congress to support the HOPE Act today!

2015 Advocacy Forum

The 2015 Alzheimer's Association Advocacy Forum was a record-setting event. Advocates from across the country held more than 500 meetings with members of Congress and their staff, urging swift action in support of Alzheimer's research funding and the newly-released HOPE for Alzheimer's Act.

Thanks in part to the support that partners Anthem and Takeda provided through our sister organization, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement, we were able to expand our scholarship program, enabling a record number of individuals to attend the Forum. More than 1,000 advocates from across the United States converged on Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress.

Today was an important step forward in the fight against Alzheimer's, and YOU made it happen! Thanks to the hard work of Alzheimer's advocates, the Alzheimer's Accountability Act was fully incorporated in to the recently signed funding bill. Because of this critical legislation, scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will now directly tell Congress how much funding they need, on an annual basis, to reach our national goal to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer's by 2025. The Alzheimer's Association and its sister organization, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM), were the only Alzheimer's advocacy groups to work on this key legislation.

Additionally, the funding bill includes a $25 million increase for Alzheimer's research, coming on the heels of an unprecedented $122 million increase for Alzheimer's research, education, outreach and caregiver support earlier this year.

Passage of the Alzheimer's Accountability Act is an incredible milestone for our movement, but we can't let up. In the weeks ahead, Congress and President Obama will prepare the federal budget for next year, and they need to hear from you.

Take a moment and tell your elected leaders to continue their support in the fight against this devastating disease.

The current political environment in Washington is challenging, and it's hard to win such a significant victory, but your tireless efforts made all the difference in the halls of Congress this year.

Continue the fight and tell President Obama and leaders in Congress to make Alzheimer's a national priority.

From the Alzheimer's Association and our partners at the Alzheimer's Impact Movement, thank you again. We look forward to working together with you in 2015.

As you and your family review options for Medicare Part D prior to the Dec. 7, 2014 enrollment deadline, please consider coverage of any drugs related to Alzheimer's disease or other dementias.

Of particular note is a change to the availability of the Alzheimer's drug Namenda. The company that produces Namenda will cease production of one version of Namenda (Namenda IR tablets, usually taken twice per day) in January 2015.

While supplies of Namenda IR may be available at local pharmacies for a period of time after the company stops distribution in January, it is anticipated that individuals on this prescription will have to switch to another version of Namenda (XR = extended release once per day capsules). In addition, it is our understanding that a generic version of Namenda IR may be available as early as mid-2015; however, an official date has not been shared.

As with any prescription change, please have a conversation with your physician regarding options and next steps for you or your family members.

The current session of Congress has left many important issues unresolved. Critical legislation is languishing in committees and vital budgetary decisions have yet to be made. With such inaction it's easy to assume this session of Congress is over.

But it's not!

In the coming weeks Congress will be focused on developing next year's federal budget. Let them know that increasing funding for Alzheimer's research should be their TOP PRIORITY.

Urge your members of Congress to provide an additional $200 million in Alzheimer's research funding.

Davenport, Iowa - Making ends meet should not mean going without your medication. Medicare prescription drug coverage, known as Part D, helps fill the gap for eligible Quad Citians but unfortunately many don't review their policies and find themselves spending more money on prescriptions drugs then may be necessary. This is why it is so important for Medicare recipients to take part in the annual Medicare Open Enrollment period, October 15 through December 7.

On October 15, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will announce its Part D plans for 2015.  According to CMS, there are several plan changes which will impact Iowans. "Iowa will have 29 stand-alone drug plans in 2015, compared to 32 for 2014," says Kris Gross from the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP).  "It is very important that Iowans do a Part D check-up and see if their current plans will still provide the best coverage for 2015."

According to SHIIP, seven plans were dropped and four new plans were added. Thirteen plans show reduced premiums and thirteen plans increased theirs.  None of the plans cover brand name drugs in the coverage gap, but several cover generic drugs.  There are five plans which are available at $0 for people who qualify for the full Part D extra help.

Going through this process can be confusing that is why the Center For Active Seniors, Inc. (CASI) is offering free assistance through its SHIIP program. Five specially trained SHIIP volunteers will be available, during the open enrollment period, by appointment, Monday through Friday, to offer assistance in finding coverage that best fits a Medicare recipient's needs.

Those interested in meeting with a CASI SHIIP counselor must make an appointment, in advance, by calling 563-386-7477. Counselors will offer this free assistance from October 15 through December 7 on the following days and times: Noon-5 p.m. on Mondays, 1-6 p.m. on Tuesdays; 9 a.m. - Noon on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - Noon and 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays and from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Fridays. Counselors ask that you have a valid photo identification card, your Medicare card and a list from your pharmacy of all current medications. If a list cannot be provided, CASI's SHIIP counselors ask that you bring all your prescription medications to your schedule appointment.

During this same period you can enroll in a Medicare prescription drug (Part D) plan if you missed the enrollment deadline earlier this year.  SHIIP counselors can assist you with enrollment in a Part D plan also.  If you're happy with the plan you have and what it's going to be offering next year you don't need to do anything.  Your enrollment will continue into next year.

CASI was established in 1972 and serves the needs of older adults by providing a variety of events and activities focused on health and wellness, social engagement, lifelong learning, and community involvement. CASI also provides a senior advocacy program to assist older adults, their families, and caregivers in needs assessment and referral for services. Jane's Place at CASI is the only adult day services center in Eastern Iowa serving adults with Alzheimer's and dementia. Please contact CASI for additional information.
