MONTICELLO, IA --The annual Camp Courageous of Iowa Pancake Breakfast and Open House is set for Sunday, September  27, 2009  from 7:00 A.M. to 1:00  P.M.  In the lodge, pancakes will be prepared on six pancake grills to get everyone through the line quickly. The cost is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under 12 for pancakes and sausage.

The Open House features include the New Olympic Training Floor in the pool, The Live Reenactment Train Robbery, at 9:00 AM, 9:45 AM, 10:45 AM, 11:45 AM at the Lions Train Depot. In the Sill barn performing free will be Dixie-Notes-Plus at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12 PM. Plus live WMT Broadcast from the camp's main lodge by Honorary Board Member Leo Greco.

The Pancake Breakfast is also kick-off for sales of the Camp Courageous Fruitcakes. The fresh baked Fruitcakes are $10.00 each with no purchase limit.

Camp Courageous is celebrating their 35th anniversary. A DVD presentation about the camp, as well as new camp merchandise can be found in the camp's main office. The camp began serving individuals with disabilities during the summer of 1974 with campers totaling 211. Today the camp is open year-round and the campers number over 5,100!  Camp Courageous continues to run on donations, without government support, without paid fund raisers, and without formal sponsorship.

MONTICELLO, IA - Camp Courageous Antique Market Show will be held on Sunday, November 1st at the Berndes Center on the fairgrounds in Monticello. Doors will be open from 9:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M.  Camp Courageous is seeking dealers and exhibitors to display quality antiques and collectibles.  Food and beverages are available for purchase throughout the day, including pie and ice cream.  This show is held each year in the spring and in the fall.

MONTICELLO, IA - On August  29th Gayla Drake Paul will perform in the Sill Barn at Camp Courageous in Monticello Iowa as part of a the Bear River Creek summer concert series.  She will perform with Eric Douglas on drums and Dan Johnson on base. Together they form GDP 3.

GDP3 is a group performance that music lovers will not want to miss. Gayla Drake Paul is ranked as one of the top 100 acoustic guitarist on the planet by digitaldreamdoor.com. They also recommend her solo guitar CD in their top 10 Suggested Listening for Acoustic Guitar and recently chose her Broken Blues as one of the top 100 acoustic CDs of all time.

Eric Douglas has been a drummer for over 25 years.  In 2008 Eric was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Musician Dan Johnson is fast approaching the 6,000 gig mark- that's an average of 250 concerts a year, proving his status as one of the most in-demand musicians in the Midwest. In the 1980's Dan toured with Terry Lawless and is currently the keyboardist for U2. In 2007 Dan was inducted into the Iowa Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Doors for the August 29th performance open at 6:15 with concert starting at 7 PM at Camp Courageous.  The camp's Sill barn is an awesome place to experience a concert.  It is a  post and beam barn that looks like it was built 100 years ago yet it has central air conditioning, a bathroom and is handicapped accessible. Musicians loves the acoustics. There is a $10.00 per person suggested donation for the event with proceeds to benefit Camp Courageous and the Grant Wood Country Foundation for the Arts. A portion of this concert has been underwritten by a grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

Camp Courageous of Iowa is a year-round recreational and respite care facility for individuals with disabilities. Campers with mental and physical disabilities, head injuries, hearing or visual impairments, autism and other special needs are served.

Working with adults with disabilities is often a very real challenge. Campers may need help with personal care including feeding, dressing, and toileting. Some campers exhibit behavior problems.  Patience, energy, good judgment and enthusiasm are important attributes for a position at Camp Courageous.  The hours are long.  An unselfish attitude and an emphasis on teamwork are needed. Staff members are expected to put the campers' needs before their own. If you possess these skills, consider applying for a position.

Volunteer positions, internships, and paid positions are available.

Paid counselors and activity specialists receive the best camp employment package around. Room and board are provided which includes an air-conditioned staff dormitory affording separate living quarters from the campers.  Staff share cabin duty on a rotating basis.  Other benefits include a restricted medical plan for seasonal staff and health insurance for year-round Program Specialists.

Year-round positions begin the first day of the fall season and require at least a one-year commitment.  Candidates for year-round positions must have previous experience with individuals with disabilities.
