Although the summer season may be over, there's still plenty of things to see and do downtown! Matthew West, a Dove Award nominee, headlines at the Adler Theatre Saturday. On Tuesday at the Adler, a performance of In the Mood will celebrate the music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, and other icons of the 1940's.

Stop by Bucktown during Final Friday for opening night of the 2012 Living Proof Exhibit, which includes more than 100 pieces of art from cancer survivors. This inspiring event will feature performances by Ellis Kell, ComedySportz, and more.

Described by Music Connection as "bohemian, intriguing, and introspective," John Common is an act worth checking out Friday at River Music Experience. Tonight, another highly recommended eclectic band, Paper Bird, will take the stage. Other great programming this week includes The Curtis Hawkins Band, Todd Clouser's A Love Electric, Community Drum Circle, QC Rock Academy, Blues Cafe, and more.

Fall is here, and that means it's time for the Pumpkin Ale Tapping at Great River Brewery. Join the brewers on Saturday to enjoy this seasonal favorite. You won't want to miss seeing the ale flowing from giant pumpkins! Brew fans should mark their calendar for next week's "Suds!" beer tasting event at German American Heritage Center, too.

Tonight, the Figge is hosting its opening reception for the Posting Beauty in African American Culture Exhibit. Check out the Curator Lecture on this great exhibit this weekend, too. Participate in one of the museum's upcoming figure drawing, watercolor, and tapestry weaving classes, too. There will be a fun Pastel Landscape Workshop and Arts Lovers Book Club this week, as well.

Rhythm City is featuring one more evening of their popular It's A Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday! Reserve your seat today and plan to enjoy free music from Lee Blackmon both Friday and Saturday at the casino, too. Don't forget to pay a visit to the Freight House Farmers Market this week while you're here!

Father's Day Week in Downtown Davenport

Bring Dad downtown to experience one of the nation's greatest riverfront towns this Father's Day! Enjoy Ride the River with Dad and explore the Mississippi Riverfront throughout the Quad Cities. Centennial Park's Summer CRAZE and the River's Edge Beach Party are other great ways to spend the afternoon, too.

Another Father's Day downtown option is to spend the evening at the ballpark! Play catch with Dad in the outfield of a professional baseball stadium after the game! Brunch is served at Rhythm City Casino and in Hotel Blackhawk's Bix Bistro. The Day wraps up with live music by Tewanta and Company at Music on the Levee and Willie Pickens at Third Sunday Jazz.

Sonny Landreth and his amazing slide guitar skills will be on display live in the Redstone Room at RME Saturday! Landreth was named the instrumentalist of the year in 2005. The RME Live Lunch series will feature ESME, Lewis Knudsen, Keith Soko, and Randy Leasman. Also performing at RME this week are Corey Wallace, John for Mayer, and the Quad City KIX Band.

JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound, dubbed "one of the hottest US soul acts" by MOJO Magazine will rock River Music Experience Friday! Don't miss Friday Live at 5, Firesale, Brer Bucktown's Traveling Tent Show, and Haddonfield, too. Bring your own musical talent to Kidz Days at RME, Acoustic Music Club, and Open Mic Night.

A new poetry exhibit, Waxing Poetic, celebrates its Opening Reception tonight at the Figge Art Museum. This unique exhibit invites visitors to respond to the art. Thursdays at the Figge is back tonight along with a Museum Tour on Sunday. Summer classes are in full swing at the Figge too with Fridays at the Figge, Sculpture - Plaster Carving, and Art in the Middle.

The River Bandits close out the first half of the season with a busy weekend at Modern Woodmen Park. Check out Half-Price night with Thirst-Day Thursday drink specials as they wrap up their series with Kane County. The weekend series with Wisconsin brings fireworks, U.S. Bank Family Sunday, and Bark in the Park.

The Adler Theatre will be bustling with activity this week beginning with the Spotlight Dance Cup and followed up by a Broadway performance of The Color Purple! Nominated for eleven Tony Awards, The Color Purple's Grammy-nominated score is sure to please. Buy tickets now to see next Thursday's performance by comedian and songwriter Rodney Carrington, too!

The Figge is packed with programming including the Fins & Feathers Opening Reception, W(h)ine & Art, the return of Thursdays at the Figge, a FREE family event, and showings of two films, The White Rose and Sophie Scholl. There's plenty of reasons to visit the museum this week!

Fans of 80's rock legends are going to love Hairball - A Celebration of Arena Rock at the RiverCenter on Saturday! On the other side of the street, the Quad Cities Chamber Silver Ball will be in full swing at the RiverCenter. Tickets are still available for the general public, so click here to reserve your place at Silver Ball.

Would you rather be shopping than prepping for a Super Bowl party this Sunday? If so, than plan on heading to The Ruby Slipper for their semi-annual sale! They'll be open special hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Open Mic Contest

The increasingly popular Dubstep genre will be on full display at River Music Experience on Saturday when Ghost Science takes the stage in the Redstone Room. his Week in Downtown Davenport: 1/26 - 2/1

Downtown Davenport is loaded with events this week, but first, we'd like to open with some big news. Restoration St. Louis has begun its $4.5M renovation of the historic Renwick Building! Eighteen beautiful market-rate apartments and new commercial space are on the way, and we couldn't be more excited.

The good news doesn't end there, because Downtown Central Perk just celebrated its grand opening in the historic Bayer Building at 226 West 3rd Street! The coffe shop features vegetarian and vegan entrees, as well as direct trade coffees and more.

The coffee shop is a major component of the Bayer Building's ongoing restoration, that once completed, will also boast a restored façade and additional market-rate apartments. Check out our photo album and this QC-Times article, too.

Bridal Expo

If you're planning a wedding, don't miss the Jaycees Bridal Expo at the RiverCenter this weekend! Next door, the Tribute National Talent Contest will be in full swing at the Adler Theatre.

Celebrate our local artistic and musical talent during the Augustana Sights & Sounds Final Friday event at Bucktown! This unique photography exhibit will make for a special night, and if you're still not familiar with Final Friday, check out this video made by our friends at Star Dog Gallery.

River Roots Live veterans, The Giving Tree Band, are headlining a gig at River Music Experience! Local favorite Tim Stop will also be performing at RME, and fans of electro-funk should grab tickets now to see Eliot Lipp on Wednesday. There are a whopping eight FREE events this week at RME! Bring the family down to give the Community Drum Circle a try, too.

You've probably heard of Carnival in Rio and Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but are you familiar with Fasching and Karneval? Learn all about these fascinating events at the German American Heritage Center, and mark your calendar to catch their next showing of The White Rose film, as well.

This Week in Downtown Davenport: River Roots Live & More

Join us on the Mississippi riverfront this weekend for River Roots Live! Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms are headlining our 17 band lineup in LeClaire Park, and make sure you come hungry, because award-winningRibfest barbeque will be here, too. Did we mention admission is FREE? You've got no excuse to miss a FREE show of this caliber!

We're giving away a motorcycle from Wiebler's Harley Davidson on Saturday, and the kids will love the fun workshops and entertainment at the Jr. Jam Tent. The Figge is even hosting a River ARTS Live workshop where kids can create their own artwork.

Even the Budweiser Clydesdales are coming to River Roots Live! Don't miss your opportunity to meet the world-famous horses on Saturday night. From critically acclaimed bands to mouth-watering barbebque, the festival is going to be an absolute blast. River Roots Live will go on rain or shine, and click here to register as a volunteer. Blue Man Group

Rhythm City will continue to provide free salsa dancing lessons through August, and you can also catch free concerts by Caught in the Act and The Tailfins at the casino. Hello!

The gentle summer breeze may feel more like a blow-dryer pointed at your face right now, but fear not, we have plenty of ways for you to stay cool downtown this week.

Ice

Ice skating is FREE during public skate times at River's Edge on Friday and Saturday, and skate rental is even free while supplies last! The City has also declared the Figge, RiverCenter, and library as official "cooling centers." That means admission to the Figge is FREE all day today and free until 5 p.m. on Friday!

Zeppelin

Werner Zarnikow will host a presentation titled Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin and His Airships at the German American Heritage Center Sunday, and the first Trivia Night at Brady Street Pub will kick-off this evening. Mark your calendar now for next Friday's Bucktown Bash too so you don't miss a glimpse of "The Kraken!"

Dubtonic

River Music Experience has a very busy week ahead beginning with a fun show featuring a reggae/dub band hailing all the way from Jamaica, Dubtonic Kru! Earlier in the evening, Friday Live at 5 will feature Doublas & Tucker.

Blackberry Smoke

Blackberry Smoke, one of the premiere southern rock bands in America, will be making an appearance at RME, too! Having shared the stage with Zac Brown Band, ZZ Top, and Kid Rock, Blackberry Smoke is already making big waves in the music scene. Watch their video! A tasty show by the Quad-Cities' own Bacon is slated for a gig at RME, as well.

A discussion titled "What Makes an Icon?" will take place during Thursdays at the Figge, and be sure to take the museum's newest tour, too. Check outFridays at the Figge to create a masterpiece of your own! New docents are also being recruited this week.

Street Fest 2011

Bix 7 and RAGBRAI weekend is almost here, and Street Fest presented by Wells Fargo will serve as the party binding the two huge events together! Visit the Street Fest homepage for event details, and please considervolunteering for a beverage tent. Volunteers must be 21 or older, and we're especially in need of volunteers for the 9PM - Midnight shift still.

Mural 5

The new mural at Iowa & 3rd Streets is now complete, and we couldn't be happier! This beautiful piece of artwork was created by local teens in theQuad-City Arts Metro Youth Program. We'd like to thank these amazing teens for completing their third mural project downtown!

Barrel House

A wide range of construction projects are underway downtown from an expansion at Mac's and renovations at the Bayer Building, to upgrades at the LeClaire Park Bandshell and City Hall. We've even got a new restaurant/pub opening soon on 2nd Street called Barrel House 211! Downtown just keep growing! Stay tune for more details.

John Prine

Summer is in full gear and we're excited to share another round of downtown events and good news with you! Legendary Americana songwriter, John Prine, will be joined by Iris DeMent for an intimate concert at the Adler Theatre this weekend. Buy tickets here and grab a good seat while you can!

Juneteenth

The annual Juneteenth festival will be commemorating the end of slavery and celebrating cultural diversity in LeClaire Park on Saturday. Admission is free, and families can enjoy educational programs and fun activities beginning at noon. On Sunday, the LeClaire Park Bandshell will host a free performance featuring jazz tunes by Tewanta & Company.

Anime

You might notice some pretty festive outfits and hair throughout downtown this weekend, because the QC Anime-zing! convention just kicked off at the RiverCenter! If you have no clue what this is all about, embrace your inner geek and read this great QC-Times article summarizing the event.

The River Bandits are back home to take on the Peoria Chiefs, and Modern Woodmen Park is also hosting the MWL 2011 All-Star Game and Home Run Derby! All gentlemen dining at the Rhythm City dinner buffer on Father's Day will receive a free tool kit while supplies last. Jordan Danielsen and Lee Blackmon will be playing free concerts at the casino this week, too.

3rd Sunday Jazz

River Music Experience's popular free outdoor concert series, Friday Live at 5, will feature Jim the Mule this week! The 3rd Sunday Jazz workshop and matinee will present Classic Duets featuring Saalik Ziyad & Sarah Marie Young. RME is also hosting Kidz Days and Live Lunch, as well as performances by Rod Kinny, Hello Ramona, The Challenge I Know, Mike Cochrane, and more.

Tonight during Thursdays at the Figge, the docents will lead a discussion regarding the first ever docent-curated exhibition at the museum, Intriguing Images. Chair Affair

Pull up a chair for the Figge's gala event, "A Chair Affair," which is celebrating the opening of a new exhibit, The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Chair Design. Miss Iowa

The Miss Iowa & Miss Teen Scholarship Pageant will keep the Adler Theatre busy throughout the weekend, and the River Bandits begin another homestretch tonight at Modern Woodmen Park. Seats for next week's performance by John Prine and Iris DeMent at the Adler won't last forever, so buy your tickets now!

Get a sneak peek of downtown's newest restaurant! Bowls: Urban Eats is now open at the corner of 3rd & Brady, and their delicious noodle, rice and salad combinations will make your mouth water. Bowls will release an expanded menu with new hours upon its grand opening later this summer, but stop in now and be among the first to try it out!

Flat track roller derby action will be in full force Saturday when the QC Rollers arrive at the RiverCenter for another bout, and we recommended participating in a drop-in hockey or soccer game at River's Edge if you'd like to get involved in your own athletic competition. Inventive singer/songwriter Lipbone Redding is hosting a FREEworkshop and show at River Music Experience. Redding is known for his ability to use his vocals to sound exactly like a trombone; the phenomenon must be seen live to be truly appreciated! RME is providing multiple FREE concerts this week including Friday Live at 5 featuring Orangadang, Jason Parchert, The Madison Letter, andSurface Tension. Stop in for a Live Lunch session or Songwriters in the Round this week, as well.

The Manny Lopez Big Band will headline Music on the Levee on the LeClaire Park band shell on Sunday, but if you'd rather discuss a good science fiction book than dance on the riverfront, check out DAGOBAH at the library. QC-Times Photo Quilt

A new exhibit regarding German Influences in the Civil War at the German American Heritage Center will be highlighted by a Quilts of the Civil Warpresentation on Sunday. Read this great Quad-City Times article for more details.

Parking meter removal is on the horizon and the City is hosting two public meetings next week regarding the changes coming to downtown parking ordinances, signage, etc. Both meetings will be held Thursday, June 16. The first meeting will be at 3 p.m. at NewVentures (331 W. 3rd Street), and the second will be held at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
