The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities Announces the Christmas Assistance Program

Quad Cities: The Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program - a community wide effort - is The Salvation Army's largest outreach event each year. Last year, for example, more than 6,000 toys and gifts were distributed to 2,206 children and more than 1,900 households received food.

Families who would like to receive assistance during the holidays must register and complete the application process before December 6th.

Registration Dates and Times for both Locations:

Mondays– 12:00PM to 2:30PM On October 28; November 4, 11, 18, 25; and December 2

Wednesdays– 1:00PM to 4:00PM On October 30; November 6, 13, 20; and December 4

Fridays– 11am-2pm On November 1, 8, 15, 22; and December

What to bring: Applications will not be taken without the items below:

1. Adults: a. Picture ID with valid date, b. Social Security card & c. Proof of address (2 pieces of mail)

2. Children: a. Social Security Cards or b. Medical Cards or c. Birth certificates for each child.

3. Proof of: a. Household Income & b. Federal or State Benefits.

Generous Quad Cities residents make this program possible with their monetary donations, as well as donations of toys through the Angel Giving Trees. Beginning November 2, Angel Trees will be displayed at all QC Wal-Marts. NorthPark and SouthPark Mall will again host trees in their JC Penney and Younkers Courts, respectively, starting November 29.

Food and Toiletry Coupon Donations Sought; Homeless Family Shelter Teaching Class on Couponing

Quad Cities, USA: The Salvation Army is beginning its first ever Couponing Class for the Family Service Center program's residents at the end of the month. We are asking the community to mail to or drop off coupons at: The Salvation Army, 301 W. 6th Street, Davenport, IA 52803, Attn: Lindsay. (corner of Harrison and 6th Street downtown)

This new class called Coupon Clippers will be an extension of the Budgeting Class, where clients learn how to manage their finances and savings. The first two Couponing Classes will be held at the shelter where clients will learn to plan shopping trips and manage their grocery budget with coupons.

The third class will be a "field trip" at an area grocery store where the group can put their new skills to work, and save some money!

All types of coupons are needed: packaged food, canned food, paper products and toiletry type items such as shampoo, razors, toothpaste and diapers. All inserts from the Sunday's papers are desired.

Approximately 100 people (60% are children) reside at the Family Service Center every night receiving shelter, food and case management. This homeless family shelter provides life skills classes to all adults.

Quad Cities, IA/IL: Hundreds of Red Kettle Campaign bell ringers will be needed this season to help stand all fifty Quad Cities Red Kettle Locations. The hours can be as few as 8 hours per week, and as many as 40 hours per week. The bell ringing campaign will begin Friday, November 15, 2013.

Homeless Family Shelter in Dire Need

Quad Cities, USA:  The Salvation Army Family Service Center, 301 W. 6th Street, Davenport, is in desperate need of new or gently used bath towels and wash clothes.

People often come to The Salvation Army with just the clothes on their backs and the towels are given to new residents and their children (60% of the shelter's residents are children) as they enter the program.

Approximately 100 people reside at the Family Service Center every night receiving shelter, food and case management.  This homeless family shelter provides all the basic needs to the residents who are without.

The towels and monetary donations can be dropped off any time at The Salvation Army, 301 W. 6th Street, Davenport - on the corner of Harrison and 6th Streets.

50+ Quad Cities Students Awarded Back-to-School Shopping Spree from Target and The Salvation Army

QUAD CITIES, USA: On August 6, 2013, more than 50 local students in need will have the opportunity to visit one of the two area Target stores to purchase school supplies, gym clothing and other must-have necessities just in time for back-to-school. The Salvation Army and Target are helping Quad Cities' least fortunate kids in grades K-8 gear up for the upcoming academic year with a Target School Spree gift card of $80. Each child will be paired with a volunteer chaperone for their fun day of back-to-school shopping.

Nearly 500 Target stores will participate in the Target School Spree event between July 16 and September 15 in select regions across the country. Each $80 Target GiftCard awarded as part of the program will provide a child with the necessary supplies to go back to school in the fall, ready to learn. Through programs like the Target School Sprees, Target is on track to give $1 billion for education by 2015.

The First Day Project unites Quad City area school supply drives to meet the needs of students who require help in obtaining school supplies. Nearly 20,000 students in Quad City schools are from families with incomes low enough to be eligible for Free & reduced fee waivers for school meals and fees. Some of Quad City area schools have an average as high as 60% of students qualifying for Free & Reduced. The First Day Project will supply thousands of Quad City students with the items they need to start their school year with confidence.

Shoppers are encouraged to purchase school supplies and bring them to the school bus so that our community's low-income, homeless, or needy children will be prepared on the first day of school. Items needed include backpacks, dry erase markers, loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, colored and regular pencils and pencil boxes, pocket folders, pens, crayons, glue sticks, tissues, scissors, erasers, washable markers, watercolor paints and hand sanitizer.

Quad Cities – The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities will bid a fond farewell today to Captains Ronnie and Bridgette Amick.  After five years of dedicated service to the Quad Cities community, the Amicks have been assigned to command the Cape Girardeau, MO Corps starting July 1, 2013.

The Salvation Army is on the ground in Moore, Oklahoma with multiple canteens and personnel coordinating with Local and State Emergency Management to serve first responders and those affected by the tornado. We continue to provide service to hard hit areas from Tuesdays' storms which include Shawnee - multiple sites, Carney area, and Cleveland County.

Meals and hydration are being provided for first responders and those affected.   Major Steve Morris, Arkansas-Oklahoma Divisional Commander has been driving around the affected area.    Major Morris states "The devastation is far reaching both in human life, property and livestock loss.  The Salvation Army is honored to serve and provide sustenance to first responders involved in search and rescue, coordination efforts and more.  And, of course, all survivors will be provided spiritual and emotional care."

Canteens involved in the response from Oklahoma include Central Oklahoma Area Command (Oklahoma City), Ardmore, Enid, Lawton, McAlester and Muskogee.  Also, disaster response teams from Pine Bluff, Jonesboro and Hot Springs, Arkansas are en route to the Oklahoma City metropolitan area to assist in response.  Personnel from across the division are also traveling to the area to form a Divisional Incident Command Team (which helps coordinate the overall response for The Salvation Army).  Central Oklahoma Area Command has established a local Incident Command team for response.

The benefits from these fund raisers will be used for local Salvation Army youth programs.

For hundreds of Quad-City children, The Salvation Army Corps Community Center is a second home.  And for the 55 children living at the Family Service Center, it is their home.  The Corps Community Centers and the Family Service Center provide children from low-income families the opportunity to play music, learn sports, make new friends, attend summer day camp, and even attend an overnight camp in the beautiful hills of Washburn, IL.  All activities feature life skill and character building, safety and structure.
