New position will focus on rescue and distribution of more food from retailers

Davenport, IA (August 11, 2015) - River Bend Foodbank announced a $55,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to fund a new position, retail store donation coordinator, for the specific purpose of working with local and national retailers to secure more donated food.

The need for this position stems from the understanding that retail store donations are a critical component in being able to serve more people struggling with hunger. A staff person dedicated to working with retailers, both small and large, to rescue and distribute food that might otherwise go to waste will not only help build the capacity of the River Bend Foodbank but, ultimately, help better meet the ongoing local need. Bob Evans has been hired as River Bend Foodbank's retail store donation coordinator. Bob has 13 years' experience in food banking, having been a driver making retail pickups and as the manager of agency relations.

"We are thrilled that the Walmart Foundation has funded this new staff position and understands the value of food banks working hand-in-hand with local retailers to fight hunger," said Mike Miller, River Bend Foodbank Executive Director. "As a member of the Feeding America network, we have seen how securing retail store donations is a key driver to increasing our ability to secure more food for more people. With this grant, we'll be able to develop stronger relationships with our local retailers and do more for the people struggling with hunger in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois."

River Bend Foodbank is one of 15 Feeding America member food banks across the country this year to be awarded a grant for a retail store donation coordinator. The grant is designed to support the first year salary and benefits costs for the staff position.

While the position is funded through a Walmart Foundation grant, the new retail store coordinator will work with all retailers in the area in an effort to secure more food for the River Bend Foodbank. The coordinator also will help educate store personnel on the appropriate guidelines for donations through the food bank's retail donation program.

The funding for the position comes at a time of particular need, as food insecurity remains high throughout the country. According to the USDA, approximately 49 million people - including 16 million children - in the United States struggle with hunger. Here in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, 131,900 local residents are food insecure.

Through their longstanding commitment to fighting hunger, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provide donations of both funds and food to Feeding America and its nationwide network of food banks. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have set goals to provide four billion meals to those in need in the U.S. through 2020. River Bend Foodbank is one of Feeding America's 200 member food banks across the country and currently receives product donations from local Walmart stores. DAVENPORT, IOWA- River Bend Foodbank announced the release of the annual Map the Meal Gap study, which details the startling rate of food insecurity experienced by community members in their 22-county service area. Map the Meal Gap 2015 results reveal that food insecurity disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations, including over 49,000 children.

Food insecurity is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's measure of lack of access at times to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.

"At River Bend Foodbank, we are constantly working to increase our capacity to close the Meal Gap," said Michael Miller, Executive Director. "While we were very pleased to increase our distribution to over 7.3 million meals in 2014, food insecurity rates have increased by an even greater amount."

Nationally, 15.8% of the population is food insecure, with 21.4% of children being food insecure. Furthermore, 43% of those who are food insecure are above the income threshold for food stamps, now called SNAP.

Other key findings local to River Bend's 22 counties:

·         49,710 children are food insecure, increasing from 20.6% to 21.5%.

·         131,900 people overall are food insecure, increasing from 12.4% to 12.9%.

·         The total number of meals missed increased from 22,196,800 to 23,346,200.

Map the Meal Gap 2015 is based on an analysis of statistics collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Census Bureau, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2013, the most recent year for which data is available. The study, commissioned by Feeding America, is a detailed analysis of the nation's food insecurity. An interactive map is available that allows viewers to explore the issue of hunger in Iowa/Illinois and across the country. The map along with an Executive Summary of the study can be found at riverbendfoodbank.org/hunger.htm and then click on "Map the Meal Gap."

"Map the Meal Gap 2015 provides unique insight into the prevalence of food insecurity in each county and congressional district in our nation," said Bob Aiken, CEO of Feeding America. "It will help policy makers and our elected officials understand the challenges they face in addressing hunger in the communities they serve."

The study is supported by the Founding Sponsor Howard G. Buffett Foundation as well as the ConAgra Foods Foundation and Nielsen. The food price data and analysis were provided by Nielsen (NYSE: NLSN), a global provider of information and insights. The lead researcher is Dr. Craig Gundersen, Professor of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois, Executive Director of the National Soybean Research Laboratory, and member of Feeding America's Technical Advisory Group.

Davenport, IA– On October 15th, The Amy Helpenstell Foundation presented River Bend Foodbank with a check for $15,000 to support the Backpack Program. This is the 4th year The Amy Helpenstell Foundation has awarded a grant to River Bend Foodbank.

Tom Laughlin, River Bend Foodbank Executive Director, said, "This is an incredible donation and insures that children will not go hungry on the weekends throughout the school year. We are so thankful for the continued support from The Amy Helpenstell Foundation."

The Backpack Program provides children at risk of hunger with nourishing food to take home on Fridays to get them through the weekend when programs like school breakfasts and lunches are not available.  The Backpack Program targets pre-school, elementary and middle school children who are at risk of chronic hunger.  These children are identified by name by their school staff.  Each child receives a weekly food pack on Fridays to put in their Backpacks and take home for the weekend.  The food is child friendly, easily consumed and vitamin fortified. The bags contain about eight items and include two "entrees" like stew or soup, two servings of fruit, cereal, milk, and juice. The Foodbank partners with the schools to select the children and distribute the food. Currently RBFB serves 47 schools and 1,700 of the neediest children in the Quad City Area.

"60-Day Hunger Drive" provides one million meals to alleviate hunger across Illinois and western Indiana

Annawan, Ill. - Since it was commissioned in January, a 60-year-old red tractor has traveled more than 1,300 miles and raised $35,192 for the River Bend Foodbank. Caren Laughlin, Director of Marketing at River Bend Foodbank accepted the donation during a presentation at Birkey's Annawan, Ill., location on Wednesday, April 23.

For two months, the restored Farmall Super MTA tractor served as an inventive for donations: individuals who gave $10 or more were entered into a drawing to win it. The tractor visited 12 Birkey's Farm Store locations from Feb. 3 to April 4 as part of the company's 60-Day Hunger Drive.

"This is an incredible effort on the part of Birkey's and its customers and we are very grateful," says Tom Laughlin, executive director of River Bend Foodbank. "Unfortunately the need for emergency food assistance in our outer counties continues to grow and families face tough decisions such as choosing between paying bills and buying food. The support from Birkey's will make a big difference in helping our neighbors in need."

The River Bend Foodbank received donations from 6 Birkey's stores, including Henry, Macomb, Galesburg, Polo, Prophetstown, and Annawan. Proceeds from each Birkey's location will be allocated to agencies in that store's local community.

More than 3,000 individuals and seven food banks participated in the drive, which raised $167,000 in donations–enough for one million meals.

"I am so proud of the way our employees worked together to contribute to neighbors in need," says Mike Hedge, President and CEO of Birkey's. "We hope that this donation will have a big impact, but we know that the need will continue long after our drive is over. We are grateful for the food banks' efforts to alleviate hunger year-round."

In the 47 counties served by Birkey's Farm Stores, Inc., more than 286,000 people are not able to access a nutritious meal when they want it, and one in five children is food insecure. Food banks selected to benefit from the drive were all part of the Feeding America network.

Ross Cluver of Buckley, Ill., won the tractor in the official drawing on Thursday, April 10.

Champaign-based Birkey's has locations throughout central and northern Illinois, and in western Indiana. The event is part of the company's 60th anniversary celebration.

River Bend Foodbank will celebrate "Extreme Kids Helping Kids" on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This family and kid-oriented event will be held in their new and larger facility at 4010 Kimmel Drive in Davenport.  It is an opportunity to teach school-aged kids about service to others while having fun at the same time.

Since most food drives happen in the fall, the Foodbank is especially needy in the spring when supplies are low.  Families, school and other youth groups are encouraged to collect and bring non-perishable food items to the Foodbank where they can enter to win prizes for the largest contribution (by weight). There will be family entertainment by the area's top children's entertainers. Special stations will be set up with, face painting, clowning, balloon artistry, caricature drawing and more, in a carnival-like atmosphere.  Entry to the event is free.

River Bend Foodbank has been serving the greater Quad-City area since 1982.  In addition to larger warehouse space, the new facility now has industrial-sized refrigeration; making it possible to provide even more fresh and refrigerated foods.
