• Quad-LINC, the Davenport Public Library's online catalog and a shared database with other Quad Cities libraries, will have a dramatically new look this month. New software will provide enriched information that library users are accustomed to seeing on commercial Web sites.
• Consumers would be limited to buying only two packages of certain over-the-counter cold medicine under a bill adopted by the Iowa House Public Safety Committee. House File 2259 prohibits a retailer from selling and a person from buying, in a single transaction, more than two packages of cold medicine (in tablet form) containing pseudoephedrine as the product's sole active ingredient.
• One of the best places to watch eagles in the Quad Cities is getting a new look. The 20th Street Overlook is located at 20th Street and Highway 92, just east of Casino Rock Island. The current facility was built in the early 1970s after the construction of the floodwall and includes a RiverWay kiosk, lots of stone riprap, and numerous concrete planters.
• The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional a state law that has taxed racetracks at a higher rate than riverboat casinos. The action is the final step in a judicial battle that began more than a year ago and reached all the way to the U.
• Stirred by reports of Iraqi children without basic school supplies, a group of St. Ambrose University students has created "Operation Pencil Box," a special five-day event to collect donations from area residents to provide overseas assistance to the children of this war-torn country.
• Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack has released his budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2005. The governor is recommending a $4.771-billion budget for next year, an increase of 5.8 percent or $260 million over the current fiscal year.
• The Iowa Department of Human Services has announced that child support payments will now be delivered electronically. In announcing the change, Director Kevin Concannon stated that electronic delivery eliminates the problem of lost and stolen checks, ends the annoyance of check-cashing fees, and ensures that custodial parents receive their money in a more timely fashion.
• The Davenport Civil Rights Commission is conducting outreach programs at four local social-service agencies. The commission will be regularly visiting United Neighbors, the Center for Active Seniors, Inc. (CASI), the Chavez Center, and HELP Legal Assistance.
• Beginning January 5, travelers at Moline's Quad City International Airport will be able to surf the Web while they wait for their flights under an alliance between the Metropolitan Airport Authority and Mediacom.
• After the dust had settled, Moline City Administrator Dale Iman still had a job. Mayor Stan Leach cast the tie-breaking vote last week, breaking a 4-4 deadlock among aldermen considering Iman's employment. Aldermen Arcillia Dominguez, 1st Ward, Pat O'Brien, 2nd Ward, Dick Potter, 4th Ward, and Dorothy Armstrong, 7th Ward, voted against keeping Iman.
