Ribbons Awarded in Iowa State Fair Holstein Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2013)(readMedia)-- Top dairies competed for honors in the Holstein Dairy Cattle show judged August 9 at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Clover-Hill Farms of Tipton showed the Grand Champion Female and Reserve Grand Champion Female Banners. Clover-Hills was also the Premier Exhibitor and tied for Reserve Premier Breeder with Le-o-La Holsteins of Peosta.

Lyons Holsteins of Castalia claimed the Premier Breeder and Reserve Premier Exhibitor titles.

Eagle Grove Farm Sweeps Competition at Iowa State Fair Southdown Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2013)(readMedia)-- Willwerth Southdowns of Eagle Grove earned top honors in the Southdown Sheep Show judged Wednesday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. The farm showed the Champion and Reserve Champion Rams and Champion Ewe. They also claimed first place in the Premier Exhibitor contest.

Helds Hampshires of Aurora, S.D., took Reserve Champion Ewe honors. Second place in the Premier Exhibitor competition went to Jared Gillmore of Lincoln, Neb., while Lewis Southdowns of Forest City took third place.

The Premier Exhibitor Award is given to the exhibitor who accumulates the most points based upon the day's placings.

Top Sheep Chosen at Iowa State Fair Shropshire Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2013)(readMedia)-- WEG and I-80 Flocks of Geneva, Neb., claimed the Champion Ewe, Champion Ram and Premier Exhibitor banners in the Shropshire Sheep Show judged Thursday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

SS Shrops of Davenport exhibited the Reserve Champion Ewe and placed second in the Premier Exhibitor contest.

Anderson Farms of Macon, Mo., showed the Reserve Champion Ram. Emily Anderson of Macon, Mo., placed third in the Premier Exhibitor contest.

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2013)(readMedia)-- Meredith Williams of Hudson was named Champion High Point Exhibitor in the FFA Horse Show held Wednesday and Thursday as part of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Amy Turner of Knoxville was named Reserve Champion High Point Exhibitor.

Banners Awarded in Limousin Cattle Show at the Iowa State Fair

Jay Straight of Logan showed the Grand Champion and Iowa Champion Bulls in the Limousin Cattle show judged Tuesday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Venner Family Limousin of Breda showed the Reserve Champion Bull. Anderson Limousin of Garner showed the Grand Champion and Iowa Champion Females while Korynn Clason of Beaver City, Neb., showed the Reserve Champion Female.

Dairy Farms Compete in Iowa State Fair Brown Swiss Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2013)(readMedia)-- Top dairies competed for honors in the Brown Swiss Dairy Cattle show judged Thursday, August 8 at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Galen Fick of Boyden showed the Grand Champion Female. Lee-Anns Swiss of DeWitt showed the Reserve Grand Champion Female and earned first place in the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor contests.

DeVore Dairy claimed second place in the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests.

The Premier Breeder Award is given to the competitor who earns the most points for animals bred and exhibited by the entrant or others during the day's show. The Premier Exhibitor Award is given to the exhibitor who accumulates the most points based upon the day's placings.

Farmer's Challenge Competition Titles Awarded at State Fair

Teams of farmers, young and old, competed in the Adult and Youth Farmer's Challenges contest on Thursday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

In the Adult division, each male/female team competed in six farm-related events such as bale throwing, egg gathering and an obstacle course, and were awarded points for their placement in each event. The team with the most points at the end of the challenge was named the Farmer's Challenge Champion and received a $300 cash award.

In the Young Farmer's Challenge, teams of two boys and two girls competed in bale toss and obstacle course competitions.

Ballet Dancer Receives Top Prize in Iowa State Fair Talent Search

Altoona resident Adrian Oldenburger, 16, placed first in the Senior division during the championship round of the 54th Annual Bill Riley Talent Search Competition held Sunday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

The ballet dancer walked away with an $8,000 prize for his routine.

Marjorie Gast, 16, of Cedar Falls was awarded second place and $4,000 for her classical harp solo.

Third place and $2,000 went to Adam Dostalik, 15, of Urbandale for his piano solo.

Mackenzie Fuller, 16, of Adel; Sabryna Leise, 16, Morgan Allen, 15, Kelsey Coffman, 17, and Kaitlyn Minor, 17, of Earlham placed fourth and received $1,000 for their tap dance performance. Hattie McConnell, 19, of Indianola placed fifth and received $500 for her musical theater dance performance.

Acts competed statewide to qualify for competition in this year's Talent Search. The championship round took place on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage sponsored by Pepsi. Bill Riley, Jr. once again hosted the show.

A total of $17,000 was awarded to the Senior and Sprout divisions combined. This year's contest was sponsored by Hy-Vee.

Winners in more than 70 classes of competition were named on Sunday in the 2013 Iowa State Fair Quarter Horse Show.

The Iowa State Fair Quarter Horse Show was a double-judged show. In such a show, the use of two judges, independent of one another, takes place. Thus, two sets of results are produced with two full sets of American Quarter Horse Association points being awarded.

The Best of the Best at the Iowa State Fair

Seven Records Set at 2013 Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions

With a final swing of the gavel, the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) raised $342,600 for the 16 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA Grand and Reserve Champions in the Sale of Champions Saturday, August 17, at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Seven champion records were broken during the Sale.

The Reserve Champion 4-H Market Steer sold for a record $31,500, besting the previous mark of $30,000 set in 2010. The Grand Champion FFA Market Hog sold for $41,000, breaking the previous record of $40,000 set in 2007. The Reserve Champion FFA Market Hog set a new record of $27,500, beating the previous record of $26,000 set in 2008. The Grand Champion 4-H and FFA Market Lambs set new records at $20,500 and $16,000, respectively. The previous records were $15,000 set in 2010 and $14,500 set in 2004, respectively. The Grand Champion FFA Market Meat Goat sold for a record-breaking $8,500, besting the 2012 record-breaking price by $1,000. The Grand Champion 4-H Broiler Pen was also a record-breaker at $7,500. The previous record was set in 2012 at $7,000.

Participants in the Sale of Champions were asked to find hometown supporters to set a floor price for bidding. The purchaser in the auction paid the difference between the floor price and the final sale price. Each participant in the Sale takes home a check for 80 percent of the animal's sale price. The IFAA keeps 20 percent to fund the scholarship program and cover Sale expenses. In addition to their sale earnings, the exhibitors of the Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer, Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog and Grand Champion FFA Market Lamb earn the use of a new aluminum livestock trailer for one year courtesy of Featherlite, Inc., of Cresco.

When added with the $188,600 of scholarships and performance and carcass awards presented prior to the Sale, the IFAA bestowed $531,200 on young livestock and poultry exhibitors during the day's event. Since the inception of the Sale of Champions in 1988, the IFAA has given out more than $6 million through Sale proceeds and scholarships to deserving youth participating in agricultural-related projects and interested in agricultural-related careers.

Iowa Youth Show the Best of the Best in 4-H Showmanship Competition

Showmanship awards were given on Saturday and Sunday to the top 4-H exhibitors of beef, sheep and swine at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Youth demonstrated their ability to present their livestock in the show ring and answered any questions the judge asked about their animals.

Outstanding exhibitors received purple ribbons, and top individuals were presented with belt buckles. The Showmanship contest is open to all 4-H exhibitors.

Young Fairgoers pedaled their way to victory at the Pedal Power Pull held Tuesday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Byers Dairy Farm of Milo showed the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Females in the Milking Shorthhorn Dairy Cattle show judged Friday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Gibbs Holsteins of Epworth claimed an Honorable Mention Grand Champion Female title.

Michael Pederson of Braham, Minn., won the Premier Breeder and Reserve Premier Exhibitor titles, and Lazy M Farm of Stitzer, Wis., received the Reserve Premier Breeder banner. Bryers Dairy Farm claimed the Premier Exhibitor award.

Gorgeous Gladiolus Awarded in Floriculture Show at Iowa State Fair

Top Iowa gardeners competed in the Gladiolus show judged Wednesday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Beth and James Romer of Ames impressed judges and earned Grand Champion, Reserve Champion and Runner-up to Reserve Champion Single Spike honors. They also took the Grand Champion Miniature or Seedling title.

Jacob Van Patten of Indianola grew the Grand Champion Three Spike, and Andy Tygrett of Atalissa earned the Reserve Grand Champion Three Spike award.
