KENOSHA, WI (05/08/2015)(readMedia)-- Local students who attend Carthage College were among the presenters at the fifth annual Celebration of Scholars event April 24, 2015. The poster exhibition features original research, scholarship, and creative work completed by Carthage students.

These students exhibited their work:

Mitchel Wright of Hampton, IL, presented "Sleep Deprivation and the Effects on Short-Term Cognitive and Physical Function" and "Pre-Participation Cardiac Screening in the NCAA: How it Can Decrease the Rate of Sudden Cardiac Death".

Chas Young of Geneseo, IL, presented "Bartholomew, One of the Few: A Cluster P Mycobacteriophage" .

Presentations include senior theses and other exemplary works the students completed in courses, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, or independent research with faculty mentors. The public event was held during Carthage's Spring Family Weekend.

KENOSHA, WI (02/18/2015)(readMedia)-- Megan Horst of Bettendorf, IA participated in a study tour to India with Carthage College in January.

In the Religion and Society in Modern India course, students encountered three contemporary Indian religious communities: Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. In India, students examined the life and interactions of these groups and analyzed how these interactions have been shaped by their historical and cultural context.

James Lochtefeld, professor of religion and Asian studies, led the tour. It came during J-Term, a monthlong period of study when Carthage students explore subjects outside their majors or minors, discover new interests, and test their creativity on campus and around the world. Carthage is ranked No. 7 in the nation among baccalaureate institutions for student participation in short-term study abroad, according to the Institute of International Education.

KENOSHA, WI (02/05/2015)(readMedia)-- Erin Holst of Bettendorf, IA participated in a J-Term study tour to Nicaragua with Carthage College.

"Biology and Geography of Nicaragua" focused on how physical geographic factors and human intervention have affected the flora and fauna of the world's largest freshwater tropical island. The tour included a trip to the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua. Students were required to engage in significant research about the varied landscape and history of Nicaragua before leaving the campus.

KENOSHA, WI (08/27/2014)(readMedia)-- Carthage College student Daisy Bower of Taylor Ridge, IL, recently conducted research aboard a NASA parabolic aircraft.

This is the seventh consecutive year that the Carthage Microgravity Team has conducted research with NASA. The NASA Science Mission Directorate approved Carthage's proposal to continue studying fuel gauging technology in zero gravity, through the Undergraduate Student Instrument Project.

The team's work could help NASA devise a solution to one of the biggest barriers of deep space exploration. The type of fuel gauge used in vehicles on Earth doesn't work in zero-g, so the team is working on one that could be used in future spacecraft and satellites.

The Carthage team traveled to the Johnson Space Center in Houston last month to fly its experiment aboard NASA's Weightless Wonder, a plane that provides periods of weightlessness by flying a series of parabolas over the Gulf of Mexico. The students constituted the only undergraduate team on a research flight that included researchers and engineers from Northwestern University, NASA-Glenn Research Center, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Carthage students have flown aboard the Weightless Wonder every year since 2008 while performing research with NASA engineers.
