"In addition, yesterday's votes in the Illinois Senate indicate that there is support for pension reform.

"There's much more work to do, but I'm pleased to see progress being made.

CHICAGO - February 7, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today released the following statement on the passage of House Bill 190. The governor called for passage of this legislation in yesterday's State of the State address, and has pushed to restore funding to Department of Children and Family Services for months. The bill now heads to the Governor's desk.

"I applaud Speaker of the House Mike Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and all the members of the General Assembly who today voted to put people to work, and protect the most vulnerable among us. They did the right thing.

"This legislation will allow us to begin construction projects this spring which will put Illinois workers back on the job. As part of our Illinois Jobs Now! capital program, these women and men will be busy repairing bridges, improving roads and strengthening our infrastructure across the state.

"In addition, this bill will enable the Department of Children and Family Services to continue its critical mission of protecting vulnerable children who have been abused and neglected.

"I look forward to signing this legislation."

SPRINGFIELD - February 5, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today released the following statement on the passing of former U.S. Congresswoman Cardiss Collins (D-IL):

"Cardiss Collins was one of the strongest, most dedicated public servants in Illinois history.

"She inspired generations with her never-ending fight for consumers and unmatched commitment to her constituents on the West Side of Chicago.

"Cardiss Collins was a trailblazer. She was the first African-American woman to represent the state of Illinois in Congress and one of the longest-serving women in Congressional history. In addition to being a leading national voice, she was a dedicated mother and, prior to her time as an elected official, a hard-working state employee.

"Cardiss Collins is a legend in our state. She will be greatly missed."

CHICAGO - January 29, 2013. On behalf of everyone in his home state of Illinois, I congratulate Ray LaHood today for his outstanding service to our nation as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Standing alongside President Barack Obama, Secretary LaHood helped lead our nation through one of the most challenging times in history. Throughout his long career of service to the people of our state and nation, Ray LaHood has combined an unmatched ethic of public service with a strong vision to ensure our nation's prosperity in the 21st Century.

As U.S. Secretary of Transportation, LaHood looked to the future. He realized the importance of implementing sustainable practices to strengthen our country's infrastructure, helping the United States remain the best place to do business while making sure families can easily connect with each other across states and regions. He made unprecedented improvements in safety on our roadways, railways, transit systems and in our skies.

During the worst recession since the Depression, he provided remarkable leadership in helping to restore our economy by spearheading the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which invested $48 billion in our transportation system and put people back to work across the United States. Thanks to Ray LaHood, Illinois is a national leader in high speed rail.

I was proud to stand next to Ray LaHood last October when we inaugurated high speed rail in Illinois and watched the speedometer on that train top 111 miles per hour. Illinois and the nation are picking up speed and heading toward a much brighter future, thanks to the hard work and visionary leadership of our friend Ray LaHood.

SPRINGFIELD - January 8, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today issued the following statement commending the Illinois State House of Representatives for passing traffic safety legislation that will reduce the financial burden on all drivers:

"I want to commend members of the Illinois House for their bipartisan passage of legislation that will help ensure every Illinois motorist is properly licensed and empower more immigrants to become stronger contributors to our economy.

"More than 250,000 immigrant motorists on our roads today have not passed a driving test, which presents a dangerous risk to other drivers. Illinois roads will be safer if we ensure every driver learns the rules of the road and is trained to drive safely.

"Not only will Senate Bill 957 save lives, it will save Illinois motorists $46 million a year in insurance premiums by making sure every driver is properly insured.

"I want to thank Senate President John Cullerton, Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, House Speaker Mike Madigan, Minority Leader Tom Cross, Rep. Edward Acevedo, Rep. Lisa Hernandez, Secretary of State Jesse White, and all proponents on both sides of the aisle for their work to make Illinois a safer place to drive.

"I look forward to signing this legislation."

"Senator Kirk, all of us in Illinois are proud of you."

SPRINGFIELD - January 2, 2013. Governor Quinn issued the following statement on today's vote by the Illinois Senate Public Health Committee to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in Illinois.

"I am very pleased to see the Senate's Public Health Committee take this important step today to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in Illinois.

"Following the horrific Aurora, Colorado movie theater massacre that left 12 dead, I proposed a statewide ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines to best protect the people of Illinois.

"As I have repeatedly made clear, there is no place in Illinois for weapons designed to rapidly fire at human targets at close range.

"Today's vote is a good sign that we are making progress as we continue to build a majority in the General Assembly.

"I want to thank Senator Tony Munoz, Senator Dan Kotowski and Senator William Delgado for their leadership and partnership to get this done. I urge the Senate to take up this matter quickly.

CHICAGO - December 14, 2012. Governor Quinn issued the following statement regarding today's tragic massacre in Connecticut:

"I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the horrific massacre that occurred today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

"All of Illinois prays for the victims of this senseless violence and their families. May God bless the immortal souls of all those who lost their lives. In their remembrance, I have ordered all flags across Illinois to be flown at half-staff beginning today.

"We know firsthand from the tragedy that took place on February 14, 2008 in a classroom at Northern Illinois University that guns have no place in any school, at anytime, anywhere in Illinois or America.

"It is the foremost duty of government to protect public safety, especially the safety of children and students.

"As governor and as a parent, I intend to spearhead passage of strict laws that will protect our children and the people of Illinois from gun violence."

SPRINGFIELD - December 5, 2012. Governor Quinn issued the following statement regarding the sustaining of his budget vetoes to close half-empty and empty facilities.

"Today is a victory for the taxpayers of Illinois.

"The Illinois House of Representatives sent a strong message about their serious commitment to reducing spending the state cannot afford.

"Closing these empty or half-empty prisons and juvenile detention centers that are no longer needed will save Illinois taxpayers $88 million a year, once the closures are fully implemented. These closures will strengthen our long-term effort to cut state expenses and put Illinois on sound financial footing.

"Once permitted by the courts, inmates who are still at the facilities will be transferred to other nearby facilities where there is room for them. All guards and other personnel will be offered jobs at other nearby facilities. And the taxpayers of Illinois will no longer be on the hook for spending millions of dollars we don't have on empty facilities.

"There is more work to do. We must work together in the weeks ahead to restore critically needed funding that will protect the state's most vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. I will continue working closely with the General Assembly to restore critical funding to DCFS to prevent the layoff of more than 500 front-line child abuse investigators.

"I am committed to continuing to take the difficult steps necessary to restore fiscal stability to Illinois.

"Working in partnership with the General Assembly, we've had a productive veto session and I look forward to continuing this progress in January as we tackle pension reform."
