Lee Kimball,  Illinois award winning pastel artist, has been changing things up with oil painting. His expertiste in one medium certainly has given him a unique advantage in the area of color theory and atmospheric light.

City of Davenport, IA, July 7, 2015 - Perhaps you have seen artists painting along the Mississippi or Ben Butterworth Parkway. Chance is - it was Lee Kimball, a local Illinois award winning pastel artist, and his group of plein-air painters. Bereskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio will be presenting the most recent of Kimball's landscapes. "He has been changing things up with oil painting. His expertiste in one medium certainly has given him a unique advantage in the area of color theory and atmospheric light," said Pat Bereskin, Director of the gallery. The show will begin Final Friday July 31st. The public is invited to attend a reception that evening, in Lee Kimble's honor, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Kimball considers himself a "contemporary 'realist' painter" who has been influenced by many artists. Lee Kimball explained, "I do not feel the need to stick to a specific style. Instead, I take a different approach depending on the subject. My art doesn't convey a message, but takes you to a unique moment in the landscape." During a recent conversation, he said, in regards to his paintings, he believes "we need to be able to enjoy things just because they are beautiful."
A graduate of St. Ambrose College who spent twenty-five years working in the field of graphic design and illustration. He discovered his love for pastel in 1994 and decided to pursue the new path of fine art full time.

Kimball has been rewarded for his exceptional work on many occasions. Nationally exhibited and known widely, he has received numerous awards such as the Savoir Faire-Senillier Award, the 1996 Annual Membership Show Best of Show Award, and the 2000 Duane Wakeham Award by the Pastel Society of the West Coast. "The time and attention given to his craft is evident in the works displayed," said Pat Bereskin, "these are pieces to be enjoyed and studied they are timeless."
The show premieres on the 31st along with the annual Bucktown Wine Walk. Hand painted glasses are sold for $15 and a selection of the latest up and coming wines of the season will be available for tasting.

Beréskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio Gallery in located Bucktown Center for the Arts in downtown Davenport, where Lee Kimball's artwork will be on display until August 22nd. Bisbey finalist in the 61st Annual Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Casein & Acrylic, in New York City.

Davenport, Iowa, July 1, 2015 - Brad Bisbey, artist and a Quad City native, recently received word that his painting, "Winter Fields" was selected as a finalist in the 61st Annual Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Casein & Acrylic. The event will be held in the Salmagundi Club in New York City through July 10th.

"Around 75 paintings are exhibited each year," Bisbey said in an interview.

He further explained, "The Salmagundi Art Club is one of the oldest art clubs in America. I have been entering work for the past 7 or 8 years.  This is the first year my work has been accepted into the exhibition.  The painting titled 'Winter Fields' measures 30x40 inches and is acrylic on canvas.  The landscape depicts winter fields I passed as I was driving down a gravel road north of Davenport.  I stopped on the side of the road to take a photo.  It was so cold; the wind hit my face and brought tears to my eyes, which immediately froze on my cheeks.  I wanted to capture my feelings toward the place, both inwardly and outwardly, and do so on a large scale."

From the age of 10, Brad has held a deep love for drawing and painting. He graduated from Moline High School and in 1976 went on to study at St. Ambrose with Father Catich. Brad has a B.A. Degree in Art.  He later studied with portrait artist Daniel Greene in Chicago, an experience that changed the way he viewed the entire painting process.  His subject matter ranges from portraits and figures to landscapes and also to work he refers to as Abstract Realism.

"Everyone and everything has the potential to be great subject matter.  The central theme throughout his work is to reveal the hand of the Creator in the work of His creation, to bring out the invisible using the visible," Bisbey explained, regarding the philosophy of his work.

Brad Bisbey lives and works in the Quad Cities. He is a member of Beréskin Gallery in Bucktown Center for the Arts in downtown Davenport, where his work is on display. He, also, teaches drawing and painting in the gallery studio. Brad's paintings and interview can be found on www.bereskinartgallery.com For additional information on Mr. Bisbey, his artwork or class schedule, please contact bereskinartgallery@gmail.com or call 563-508-4630.

The unpredictable nature of water media fused with powerful design principles will be featured at the Beréskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio during the month of July, with an exhibit of local artist Robert Zeidler's transparent watercolor paintings. Bob has worked in the graphic arts field and advertising for over 40 years and you can definitely see the influence in his paintings. Because of that background, his style translates well into the transparent watercolor medium, with emphasis on simplified, bold, colorful shapes.

As an example, he chooses one painting in the collection to showcase his process. Included are a black & white compositional sketch, a quick gestural thumbnail, several "warm-up" paintings, and then the finished piece where it all comes together in a semi-abstract style. It's interesting to understand his methodology and how he manages to "loosen up before the performance" as he puts it.

About his color choices, Zeidler says, "I don't really think about it much." Interesting, since they are unusual and hard to describe. He goes on, "If my composition is strong and the values are arranged correctly, I can use about any color I want. Sometimes I use only two colors; other times I use them all. That's half the fun of watercolor. Since the paint is fluid, it creates new colors on its own; colors that I could never mix or even imagine left to my own devices. This helps keep the painting fresh and interesting, as well as allowing the viewer to see something new each time."

Robert Zeidler lives in Davenport, Iowa, and is a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society. He's had paintings accepted in national juried competitions, and received many awards.

Following WWII, the Abstract Expressionism's movement spread internationally from New York. Artists, like Quad City's Gene Brack, have taken inspiration from this American movement and applied it to their body of work. "I love the rich texture of oil paints. There is something sculptural about the way they adhere to the canvas. The vivid and rich colors give me a variety of choices as I manipulate them into compositions that are, at times, geometric and, at other times, subtle and restful," said Brack recently in an interview.

Coming from a theatrical background as a set designer, Brack captures his dramatic effects best in harsh diagonal lines and almost comedic curving lines. There is drama in the clash of design elements; lines and color create a rich contrast that tips the balance of the composition and frees one's imagination.

Along with Brack's southern roots in central Florida, faith, education, and service in the US Air Force have affected Brack's journey. His use of color and texture open a viewer's eyes to this innovative work.

It is Atom Studio + Gallery's privilege to welcome Gene Brack as one of our own. We cordially invite you to the opening of his show, Variations: Conflicting Harmonies, which will be sure to enchant the public. A reception in his honor will be held March 27th from 6 to 9 p.m. The show will continue through April 19th, and affter the 19th, a selection of Brack's work will be included in the gallery, which is located at 225 E. 2nd Street, downtown Davenport.
