The Quad Cities brings its history to life during the spirited month of October with many spooky activities for kids and adults alike!

Climb over an enormous couch, jump on a huge bed, crawl through doors, run through masses of bubbles, and throw dishes at a big dishwasher! It's all part of the Families On! Challenge, the first and only nationwide obstacle race of its kind, and it's coming to the Quad Cities.

Your team can take on the 2.5-mile course together with its 16 over-the-top challenges on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Credit Island Park, 2200 West River Drive in Davenport, Iowa, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families, friends, and co-workers can sign up as a team to participate at familieson.com. The challenge does not end with the obstacle course, a Celebration Station brings the fun from the race to the stage. Local youth music, theatre, and dance performances will occur throughout the day.

With a new course this year, the Lagomarcino's Cocoa Beano 5K Race is great fun for the whole family. It starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Lagomarcino's, 2132 E. 11th Avenue in the Village of East Davenport, Iowa. Bring your children to celebrate Halloween on Thursday, Oct. 30 in The Downtown Rock Island Arts & Entertainment District of Rock Island, Illinois. During Fright Night visit participating art galleries, shops, and restaurants for spooky surprises throughout the evening from 5-8 p.m. Find treats at the different sites and see whose costume is the best. Storytellers will weave spine-tingling tales; pumpkin carvers will showcase their wicked designs; and kids can join in with make-and-take activities. Free admission.

Hotel Blackhawk, 200 E. 3rd St. in downtown Davenport, Iowa, hosts a Halloween Howling Ball on Friday, October 31, 2014, from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Gold Room. Come in costume for the costume contest; dance the night away; capture the night with photo booth fun; and enjoy appetizers, drinks, and a spooky themed cocktail. Cost is $50 per person. Spooky Shows

Starring Domingo Rubio as Count Dracula, this Ballet Quad Cities performance has bold music, edgy choreography, eerie lighting, creative costumes and dynamic dancing all to add up to unforgettable performances on October 17-18. Augustana College Theatre Department produces The Passion of Dracula on October 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26 at 7:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sundays at Bergendoff Hall, 3701 7th Avenue in Rock Island, Illinois. This version of the Dracula legend based on the 1897 Bram Stoker novel is set in the English countryside in 1911 where several village girls have died under mysterious circumstances.

The District Theatre Department presents The Rocky Horror Show in October with shows at 8 p.m. on October 23-Nov. 1. The theatre is located at 1623 2nd Avenue in Rock Island, Ill. Danielle from "American Pickers" is launching the American Vintage Market, a new breed of show that combines the best of traditional antiques shows and vibrant urban flea markets. It'll be held at the RiverCenter in Davenport October 25-26. The show will be packed with the best finds including furniture, jewelry, household items, electronics, clothing, art, prints, advertising memorabilia and more. Danielle will be on site to tell visitors about her best finds and share insight about the popular show on the History Channel.

Labor Day Holiday Fun

Experience the thrill of watching go-karts roar through the streets of downtown Rock Island, Illinois, at speeds up to 80 mph on August 30-31. The Rock Island Grand Prix is the largest and safest go-kart street race in the world and is the only race in the U.S. that is sanctioned for International drivers. This is a free event that goes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

The spectacular Red, White & Boom! are rescheduled (from July 3rd) for 8:30 p.m. on Monday, September 1 (Labor Day). Family activities begin at 6 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport and at Schweibert Riverfront Park in Rock Island. The bi-state fireworks show will launch from the river with primary viewing areas and family activities located in Rock Island and Davenport on the riverfront.

On Saturday, August 30, 2014, the public is invited to the Bicentennial Commemoration of the Battle of Credit Island. The memorial marker dedication and presentation about the battle begins at 10 a.m. at 2200 W. River Drive, Davenport, Iowa. The free, bicentennial events begins at 8:30 a.m. with a guided nature walk on the island. Starting at 9 a.m. exhibitor booths, historical information panels, and bounce houses will open. Then at 12 noon enjoy a lacrosse demonstration. The Battle of Credit Island on September 4-5, 1814, was one of the westernmost and last battles of the War of 1812.

The Labor Day Pow Wow is Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 at Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island. Grounds open at 10 a.m. each day. Sauk from Oklahoma and Meskwaki from Tama, Iowa, will perform their traditional dances. There will be arts and crafts exhibits with items for sale, and in addition, authentic Native American food will be sold. Free shuttle bus service will be provided from the parking lot of Roe Aquarium (4422 11th Street, Rock Island). Bring the family to this fun, culturally instructive event. It's free, though donations will be gratefully accepted. Please bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The 3rd Annual East West Riverfest is a 17-day celebration of the arts, culture and heritage offerings that thrive in the Quad Cities along the Mississippi River. From September 5 to 21, 300 events will take place at various theaters, music venues, galleries, historic sites, parks, libraries, and attractions on both sides of the river in the Quad Cities.

Major events for East West Riverfest on the first weekend include :

  • Lock and Dam Country Jam is a two day country festival with live music, food, and activities for the kids. Performances include Confederate Railroad on Sept. 5th and Craig Campbell on Sept. 6th.
  • The annual Riverfront Pops Concert features the music of Elton John and the Quad City Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 6th.
  • First Friday of the month is a fun celebration in beautiful downtown LeClaire, Iowa.
  • Viva La Divas is a great girls' night out at the Speakeasy in Rock Island, where the premier drag show of the Quad Cities presents award-winning performers and beautiful costumes.
  • QCA Heritage Tractor Parade on Sept. 6th at 10 a.m. at the John Deere Pavilion.

Major events for East West Riverfest on the second weekend include :

  • "Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother" at the Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse is a fun, musical comedy that looks at grandmothers in a whole new way.
  • Hometown Teams Exhibit is a nationally touring exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution Museum, paired with local programs and exhibits on Rock Island County sports heritage.

Roaring into August

Summer is the season for fairs and festivals! The Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, Iowa, is one of the longest running fairs in Iowa, going strong for 95 years. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, July 29 - August 3. The fair has a great line-up of Grandstand shows each night, including Eli Young Band, Lady Antebellum, Craig Morgan, Cheap Trick, Alan Jackson, Jerrod Niemann, and carnival games and shows throughout the grounds every day.

The awarding winning and nationally recognized Quad City Air Show will be in flight August 9-10 at the Davenport Municipal Airport. After being named the Best Large Civilian air show in 2011 by the United States Navy, the Quad City Air Show is proud to the first time appearance of the United States Air Force F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, the fifth-generation fighter aircraft and the finest aviation performers in the world. There are also airplanes on display giving an opportunity to talk to the pilots, and over 200 ground exhibits with activities such as: Army Challenge course, flight simulator, games, and more.

Riverfront Festivals

The annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival in Davenport, Iowa, is from July 31st-August 3rd. The Bix Jazz Festival continues to celebrate the life and musical contributions to jazz by Leon "Bix" Beiderbecke in his birthplace city alongside the Mississippi River. LeClaire Park continues to be the outdoor music venue, along with two indoor venues for the festival that include the RiverCenter and Adler Theatre in downtown Davenport, Iowa. Bix fans come from all over the world to enjoy the music and visit some of the places where Bix played and lived.

It's a huge tug of war across the Mississippi River during the Great River Tug Fest. At 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, boats and barges yield the right of way to a 2,400-foot, 680-pound rope that stretches between Port Byron, Ill., and LeClaire, Iowa. The events leading up to the big tug include a parade and fireworks on Friday night, carnival, 5K walk/run, and live music.

Chill out in The District of downtown Rock Island, Ill. for Ya Maka My Weekend on August 8-9. This island-themed event features reggae music, steel drums, Caribbean food, an open air marketplace, and a giant sand beach complete with palm trees and tiki torches. Ya Maka My Weekend starts at 5 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The annual River Roots Live Music Festival in LeClaire Park in downtown Davenport, Iowa, on Aug. 15-16 combines the hottest music acts on the road today with great up and coming acts. Numerous bands are taking the stage, including Los Lonely Boys, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, North Mississippi Allstars, ZZ Ward, Ben Kweller, and more. There will also be great food including BBQ ribs from national ribateurs. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight.

Head Out on the Water

Floatzilla 2014 is the Quad Cities 5th Annual paddle sports festival on Saturday, August 16 that culminates with a Guinness World Record attempt at 2 p.m. at the largest flotilla of kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards on the protected backwaters of Lake Potter, at Sunset Marina in Rock Island, Ill. The festival will include guided launches at 8 a.m. for all skill levels on the Quad Cities Water Trails and beginner-friendly paddling lessons and programs. Registration includes one Floatzilla t-shirt per paddler, commemorative boat sticker, registration wrist bands, free music and rib fest at 'River Roots Live', free parking, and free shuttle to off-site parking for 'floats.'

Weather permitting, there will be intermittent lane closures in both directions on the Interstate 74 bridge from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesday, July 8.
