On Wednesday, May 20, Mike Jackson, Chief Architect with the Illinois HIstoric Preservation Agency, will present a program on Reduce + Reuse = Green Preservation.  It will start at 7 pm on the third floor of Rock Island City Hall, 1528 3rd Avenue, Rock Island, and is sponsored by the Rock Island Preservation Society and the Rock Island Preservation Commission.  Everyone is invited to this free event.

Mike is in the forefront in relating green building practices to historic preservation - last year he was extensively quoted in an article in the National Trust's "Preservation" magazine.  Those who have heard him speak know that he's very entertaining as he imparts a wealth of information.  Historic preservation -- building reuse -- is rarely emphasized in contemporary green building standards.  Mike's presentation will examine green building rating systems and historic preservation approaches and relate them to the wider perspective of sustainable development.

The public is invited.  Everyone from dedicated preservationists to builders, contractors, homeowners and developers will learn more about the green aspect of building reuse.  Sustainability is something that affects everyone and will be even more important in the future.

Everyone is invited and no reservations are necessary.  If you have questions, call Diane Oestreich, 309-788-1845, or email blueskies78900@yahoo.com

The Federal ReserveFebruary 4, 2009's  cover story - The Future of Money?: With the Economy a Wreck, Alternative Currencies Could Gain Traction - explores local and national currency systems that have emerged as alternatives to Federal Reserve Notes - commonly known as U.S. dollar bills. It is my firm belief that the Federal Reserve system - with its fractional reserve lending, lack of accountability to the people (via Congress) and the market (via price fixing of interest rates) - is going lead to the total devaluation our currency and the destruction of our nation's economy. What will fill that vacuum, without these alternative currencies, is subject for another column.

[June 5, 2009: Since this was published the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009 has been introduced by Congressman Ron Paul and co-sponsored by over 180 House members from both sides of the duopoly, Republicans and Democrats. Even if the bill passes the house it faces a royal battle from the Senate, who is even more so in the pockets of the banksters on Wall Street, with such senate luminaries in finance as Chris Dodd and Chuck Grassely.]

beausoleil1.jpgAs Michael Doucet tells it, the Acadian people of Louisiana have in their blood a penchant for both adaptation and preservation. They moved from France in the 17th Century and colonized Acadia - in what are now the Canada Maritime provinces and Maine. And many settled in Louisiana after the Great Expulsion of 1755 and became Cajuns.

"I think our culture has always looked at this - and not necessarily intellectually, but more on an emotional level - that you would adapt to whatever was around," Doucet said last week in a phone interview from his southwestern-Louisiana home. "That's how the Acadian sort of ethnic culture continues to be vital today, because it adapted.

"That's what we're doing now, is adapting to where we are now."

Reader issue #707 (Author's note: River Cities' Reader Publisher Todd McGreevy is a volunteer for and donor to the campaign of Michael D. Elliott.)

Michael D. Elliott was asked a question about closed sessions of the Scott County Board of Supervisors, and it didn't take long for the conversation to go in another direction. While Elliott speaks eloquently about his plans for the Scott County auditor's office, many discussions come back to the U.S. Constitution.

Dennis Kucinich If you've been reading the Quad-City Times or The Dispatch/Rock Island Argus, you might have no idea that one of Ohio's U.S. Representatives, Democrat Dennis Kucinich, is trying to impeach President George W. Bush. To be fair, unless you've been watching C-SPAN or you have a friend or co-worker who is a rabid Kucinich fan, you probably don't have much information on it, either.

Illinois is to be commended for addressing the issue of criminals living in nursing homes, but there is also a need to address the failure of care in far too many nursing homes in this country.

There was a time when a family member who was not considered community-worthy was placed in a back room of the house and left there to live out his or her life. Tragically, too many nursing homes have become the back rooms of our time.

The fear of living in a nursing home looms larger for far too many people than the fear of dying. It shouldn't be this way. It doesn't have to be this way.
