Enjoy an intimate evening of literature and music during the second Brucemore Arts Share on April 16 at 7:00 p.m. The event continues the tradition started by Brucemore's second family, the Douglases, who frequently entertained guests and celebrated local artists in the Mansion's Great Hall. Graduate students from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Anna Morrison and Jessie Hennan, will read original poetry and fiction. Trio Brava, an ensemble of piano, clarinet, and viola, will follow with a performance of pieces by undiscovered composers inspired by Mozart and Schuman. A light reception will follow the hour-long program. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets purchased in advance are $7 per adult and $5 per Brucemore member or student.  All tickets at the door (if available) are $10. Space is limited; purchase tickets by visiting www.brucemore.org or calling (319) 362-7375. Jessie Hennen grew up near St. Paul, Minn., and received her Bachelor of Arts in English and German literature from the University of Minnesota, Morris. She then moved to Munich, where she worked as a governess and a marketing project manager. Currently, she is back in the Midwest and working on her first novel at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Julia Anna Morrison is a second-year Master of Fine Arts candidate at the Iowa Writers' Workshop from Atlanta, Ga.  She teaches creative writing to undergraduates at the University of Iowa.  Julia's work has recently appeared in Redivider and Gulf Coast.

Trio Brava is exploring new paths in the world of chamber music. Inspired by the established repertoire of Mozart and Schumann, its members are now seeking treasure in lesser-known works for this instrumentation and commissioning a wealth of new works, especially by undiscovered composers. Megan Gray (viola), Asami Hagiwara (piano) and Lisa Wissenberg (clarinet) are pursuing their Doctorates of Musical Arts at the University of Iowa.

Audition Information

Auditions for the Classics at Brucemore production of Edmund Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26 and 27, 2013, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Brucemore Visitor Center, 2160 Linden Dr. SE. Various roles are available for physically agile males, ages 25 to 40; sword fighting or stage combat experience preferred. This is a cold-reading audition; no advance preparation required.

Cyrano de Bergerac is an unabashed historical romance set in the 1640s featuring a swashbuckling hero. While first and foremost a passionate love story, the plot develops as a comedy with fast-paced action and a tragic ending. The larger-than-life character of Cyrano is the genius hero with a ridiculously long nose and a passion for poetry and love.  Despite his bravado, Cyrano suffers through unrequited love for Roxanne, whose eyes only see the dashing Christian. Many widely known adaptations have been made, including the film, Roxanne, starring Steve Martin.

The Classics performances will be July 11 - 13 and 18 - 20, 2013, with a rain-date scheduled for July 21.  Rehearsals will begin on June 1.  For further information on auditions, contact Brucemore at (319) 362-7375 or Artistic Director James Kern (319) 365-0252.

About the Classics at Brucemore

The collaboration of Torchlight Theatrics and Brucemore in 1996 launched outdoor theatre in Eastern Iowa and a new venue at Brucemore. The Classics at Brucemore celebrates a rich history of quality live theatre, including Greek tragedy, Shakespearean comedy, and twentieth century American drama. Fully utilizing the natural amphitheater's rich backdrop, actors emerge from the woods, get dunked in the pond, and help themselves to the audience members' picnics. Characters from the show often seek help from the audience, creating an evening of hilarious and interactive fun.

Extend the growing season by learning about and purchasing cool-season plants at Brucemore's Cool-Season Plant Sale to be held April 10 through April 12 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The plant sale will be held in the 1915 Lord & Burnham Greenhouse located near the center of the Brucemore estate.

"Many annual flowers and edible plants grow and taste better when the soil and air temperatures are cool; however, there usually is not enough time for cool-season plants to grow between when the last frost occurs and the hot weather sets in," said Brucemore's Head Gardener Deb Engmark. "The cool-season plant sale is an opportunity for visitors to learn about extending the growing season by planting earlier with cool season plants."

A variety of cool-season plants will be for sale, including pansies, cabbages, snapdragons, sweet peas, and spinach. Brucemore will also sell early blooming perennials that will develop a strong root system if planted in April, such as bleeding hearts and Delphiniums. Cool-season plant sale prices range from $3.50 to $7.50, with all the proceeds benefiting garden and landscape rehabilitation projects at Brucemore. The garden staff will be on hand to provide expert advice on the selection, placement, and care of plants. The Summer Plant Sale will be held on May 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., featuring annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, and herbs.

Red Cedar Chamber Music presents Seven Score and Ten on Saturday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m. at Brucemore. The intimate wintertime concert marks the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, featuring American music that inspired the troops, supported the war effort, and entertained those at home. Red Cedar Chamber Music's flutist Jan Boland and guitarist John Dowdall will be joined by soprano Karla Goettel. A champagne and dessert reception will be held during intermission. Tickets are $35 per person or $30 per Brucemore member. Space is limited; purchase tickets online at www.brucemore.org, by telephone at (319) 362-7375, or by visiting the Brucemore Store.

The concert presents poignant ballads like Aura Lee and Stephen Foster's Gentle Annie, lively dance tunes like Governor's Grays Schottisch and The Cruel War Quickstep, battle-inspired melodies like Ellsworth's Funeral March and Sherman's March to the Sea, and nostalgic tunes sung by soldiers both North and South like Auld Lang Syne. The artists bring an Iowa perspective to the Civil War era, interspersing the music with conversation about the impact of the war, readings from Iowa diaries and letters, and some of the earliest tunes published in Iowa.

Karla Goettel's soprano voice serves her in a career of extraordinary range. She has toured the United States, singing opera, musical theater, concerts with orchestras, and solo recitals. Karla has been a frequent soloist with Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale and Orchestra Iowa, including the 2008 Brucemorechestra concert on Brucemore's lawn. She held a 12-week contract with Old Creamery Theatre and has sung two principal roles with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre. She has also performed with the Omaha, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Clinton, Dubuque, Wartburg, and Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestras. Karla was a National Opera Association finalist and was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America twice. She was selected to sing for the National Governor's convention in July 2005. Her CD, "Just Great Songs," was released in December 2007 to glowing reviews.

The Seven Score and Ten concert provides a natural partnership between two local cultural organizations?nineteenth-century chamber music in a nineteenth-century parlor. As artists in residence at Brucemore in 1983, Jan Boland and John Dowdall began performing nineteenth-century music on period instruments?an 1830 wooden flute and an 1830 gut-strung guitar. Currently celebrating its sixteenth season, Red Cedar Chamber Music continually strives to reach, challenge, and expand audiences that rarely have the opportunity to attend chamber music performances. Red Cedar Chamber musicians inform and entertain audiences, engaging them with lively commentary about the music, composers, and instruments. Their first recording, Czech Chamber Music, received a Critics' Choice award from the American Record Guide, which stated, "Chamber music should be just like this?intimate, bonding, and conversational." Red Cedar Chamber Music returned home to Brucemore in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
