Rock Island, Illinois - Familiarity breeds inspiration for three members of The Art Collective who will be showing works at a MidCoast Gallery West group exhibit opening in January. The Art Collective, twelve artists from the Quad City region, will present a group show January and February at MidCoast Gallery West, 1629 2nd Avenue, Rock Island. "A River Runs Thru Us" will debut at an opening reception on January 8, from 6-9 pm and is free to the public.

"Living along the 'mighty Mississip' has influenced my life," shares Jay Stratton, wood sculptor and furniture maker. "I grew up playing in one of her tributaries, bicycling along her shoreline, and exploring the deep ravines carved out of the land as the water made its way to the river." His wood sculptures capture the flow of the water in a unique manner as the artist allows the natural wood forms to guide him through to the outcome of a piece. Stratton will be showing some of his highly-sought-after works in the Collective's show.

Another Collective artist shares the experience of being influenced by the Mississippi, but on a daily basis. Amy Nielsen, calligrapher and mixed media artist, has lived alongside the river for 17 years. "My life on the river always motivates me in surprising ways," Nielsen shares. "It is ever changing, always moving and teeming with life." She has created a signature piece for the show, featuring brush-written calligraphy which she says, "...is a study of that continuous motion and the diversity of the underwater dwellers that unite this extraordinary location along the shores of Illinois and Iowa." Nielsen will be showing her mixed media work featuring fish sculptures along with the signature piece during the show.

Although she grew up in central Iowa, Bonnie Grebner has lived on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi in Hampton for years and also feels the river's inspiration daily. A clay artist, Grebner took the idea of life on Mississippi into the future for her work. "The clay sculptures I created for this group show are purely from my imagination. I let my mind wander and think about what life might be like thousands of years from now in and around the Mississippi River. These 'mutated crustaceans, river bank inhabitants, and underwater creatures' I created are the result," she explained.

The Art Collective show will feature the work of 12 artists with media ranging from wood to calligraphy. In addition to D'Angelo, Moore and Halverson, the Collective includes Jay Stratton, Amy Nielsen, Bill Wohlford, Sheryl Lammers, Andi Naab, Bonnie Grebner, Lori Miller, Brent Langley and Judy O. Gray. SERVING THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND

On November 30, 2015, Isabel Bloom presented $10,000 donation to Operation Smile American Picker's Mike Wolfe and his family took part in the presentation along with Operation Smile Nurse Volunteer, Connie Chiles. A reception was held at the Isabel Bloom Production Facility, 736 Federal Street, Davenport, Iowa, to present Operation Smile with a $10,000 donation as a result of the collaboration between Isabel Bloom and Mike Wolfe, creator and executive producer of History Channel's TV series American Pickers to create the sculpture Charlie's Smile. The reception featured a short presentation and display of Charlie's Smile sculptures, and was attended by Mike and Jodi Wolfe and their daughter Charlie, Connie Chiles from Operation Smile, along with Isabel Bloom owners, Cathy Nevins, Donna Young and Bill Barrett and Isabel Bloom employees. The original, handcrafted sculpture, Charlie's Smile, was created by Isabel Bloom artist, Donna Young, and is named for American Picker Mike Wolfe's daughter, Charlie, who was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate. Mike and Jodi Wolfe discovered their daughter's cleft during a routine ultrasound before Charlie's birth in January 2012. During their research, the Wolfes learned that cleft lips and/or cleft palates are the fourth most common birth defect in the U.S. Globally; a child born with a cleft has twice the odds of dying before reaching their first birthday. Their own experience has prompted them to advocate for Operation Smile. "We are so happy to be able to advocate for an organization that makes such a difference for those born with the same condition as Charlie," Wolfe said. "Helping give a healthy life and new smile to children who would otherwise not have it is just wonderful. Operation Smile: Connie Chiles, PACU RN at Ottumwa Regional Health Center, Ottumwa, Iowa began volunteering with Operation Smile in 2000 after attending a nursing conference where a nurse spoke about her experience. It was then that she decided to pursue her dream of mission work. Months later, Connie was invited to join a medical mission to Russia and in her own words, "was hooked." She has since been on 27 medical missions, the most recent in Malawi. "Each medical mission is as special as the one before and I'm still in awe of what we do as a team," says Chiles, "There is no greater feeling on a mission than watching mom and dad see their child for the first time after surgery." "Everyone at Operation Smile wants to thank Mike and Jodi Wolfe and everyone at Isabel Bloom for their compassion and generosity," says Bonnie Keuhne, Operation Smile Development Officer, Community Relations, "This donation will help provide surgery for waiting children and will help them lead lives free from the pain and the stigma of cleft. We are incredibly grateful." About Operation Smile Operation Smile is an international medical charity whose global network of thousands of credentialed medical volunteers from more than 80 countries is dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children from more than 60 countries. Since its founding in 1982, Operation Smile has provided more than 240,000 free surgical procedures for children and young adults born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities. To build long-term sufficiency in resource poor environments, Operation Smile trains doctors and local medical professionals in its partner countries so they are empowered to treat their local communities and help others around the world.

"'Christmas at Belmont' is an amazing opportunity to showcase the tremendous talent of our faculty and students," said Belmont University President Dr. Bob Fisher. "We're incredibly grateful for our partnership with NPT that brings that talent to a broader audience, and we're delighted to have an artist of Kathy Mattea's caliber at the helm this year."

"NPT is excited to once again partner with Belmont University to bring one of Nashville's great holiday traditions to the entire nation on PBS," said Beth Curley, president and CEO of NPT, which has won 46 Midsouth Emmy Awards since 2001. "I am always amazed at the depth and range of talent Belmont's School of Music is nurturing--truly making a mark on Nashville's music and performance scenes. With 2015's all-new production of 'Christmas at Belmont,' we continue a vital part of NPT's mission, which is to share these unique talents with a national audience."

DES MOINES -AFSCME Iowa Council 61 President Danny Homan issued the following statement regarding the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) decision today on the Branstad-Reynolds Medicaid Outsourcing Plan:

"All across Iowa, we have been hearing about the massive confusion that has been caused by Branstad-Reynolds Medicaid Outsourcing Plan. We are pleased that CMS has delayed the implementation of a transition for sixty days; the Branstad-Reynolds Administration is clearly not ready to implement any sort of changes at this time. The Branstad-Reynolds Administration needs to listen to Medicaid consumers. The health care of those counting on Medicaid must come first as CMS continues to evaluate the Branstad-Reynolds plan."

###

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sent a letter to the state of Iowa indicating they must  delay the proposed move to privatized management of Iowa's Medicaid program for 60 days. The letter indicated that the state of Iowa has significant issues to address before more than 560,000 Iowans who rely on Medicaid services switch to the new program. Originally, Governor Branstad intended for the transition to go in to effect on January 1, 2016.

Loebsack has been leading the fight with leaders from the Iowa Senate to ensure those who rely on Medicaid are not negatively affected by the proposed changes.

"I am pleased that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have elected to slow down the state's transition to a managed care system, as I urged them to do. I, along with many Iowans, expressed concerns that the transition was too fast to ensure the 560,000 Iowa beneficiaries that depend on Medicaid for quality care are not negatively affected. Going forward, I will continue to monitor the readiness of the state to implement the transition and to ensure care is not interrupted for our states most vulnerable populations."
