Book shows readers importance of courage, tenacity in life

HASTINGS, Minn. - The story of "The Stowaway Hummingbird" (published by Xlibris) first came to be when the author Mildred M. Ruhr read in a sports magazine of a hunter who had shot a goose. Upon removing the feathers to dress it for cooking, he discovered a tiny, lifeless hummingbird hidden in the down feathers on the goose. This story inspired the author to create a story of courage and tenacity.

"The Stowaway Hummingbird "reveals much about bravery, kindness and love of all animals, and certainly the natural world. The hero, Buzzy a tiny humming bird faces with great courage, elements everyone finds in their own lives: pain, injury and loss. The beauty of friendship guides Buzzy throughout his travels. His actions are massive, compared to his small size, bringing a cheer to all who see what can be accomplished by a tiny creature with a huge heart.

This inspiring and amusing read shows readers that it does not matter how small or weak a person is, as long as one has the courage and tenacity to face overwhelming odds.

DES MOINES, Iowa, Nov. 4, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- Presidential Candidates Senator Ted Cruz, Governor Mike Huckabee, and Governor Bobby Jindal will address National Religious Liberties Conference attendees on Nov. 6 at the Iowa Events Center. Freedom 2015 is a gathering of over 1,700 Christians celebrating the religious liberties codified into the founding of our country. Speakers and attendees alike will encourage those who have been persecuted for their religious beliefs and discuss religious liberties for Christian business owners, teachers, evangelists, chaplains, employees and churches. The conference is sponsored by over a dozen evangelical organizations including American Family Association, Liberty Institute, Samaritan Ministries and Generations.

"Despite the bedrock of religious liberty upon which this nation was founded, we've seen a marked erosion of these liberties over the past few years," explained Kevin Swanson, the conference organizer. "It's more than bakers being forced to make cakes they don't want to make and photographers forced to photograph weddings they don't want to attend or risk losing their family businesses. Last week, a high school football coach in Washington was suspended and threatened to be fired for praying privately." Swanson cited other issues including the Iowa newspaper editor who was fired last year for religious beliefs expressed in a personal blog and several years ago a public school official in Texas who was denied a promotion because she refused to remove her children from a private Christian school.

"We're thankful for presidential candidates who affirm religious liberties in our nation. We want to encourage Christians in their homes, churches and workplaces by helping them understand the freedoms that are theirs by the grace of God and by the law of the land," added Swanson.

In addition to the presidential candidates, conference speakers include :
  • Persecuted Christians David and Jason Benham, Richard & Betty Odgaard, SMSgt Phillip Monk, Aaron & Melissa Klein and Randy Pfaff
  • Religious freedom advocates Kelly Schackelford, Rafael Cruz, James Lansberry, Brigadier General Douglas Lee, USA (ret), Bob Vander Plaats, Bradley Pierce and Chuck Hurley
Conference speakers will address religious liberty in the military, medical care, parenting, education and the workplace.

Conference registration and livestreaming is available at Freedom2015.org. Media contact Blair Watkinson, Director of Media Relations, for more information: 720-778-1517 or media@freedom2015.org.

Moody's Investor Services Upgrades Scott County to Aa1, second highest rating possible

NOVEMBER 4, 2015

DAVENPORT - On Monday November 2nd, 2015, Moody's Investor Services upgraded Scott County, Iowa's general obligation credit rating from Aa2 to Aa1, the second highest rating possible. The rating upgrade will allow the County to obtain lower interest rates on bond issuances and save taxpayers money.

"This is a major milestone for Scott County and continued validation of the progress we have made in strengthening the County's finances over the last seven years," said Tom Sunderbruch, Board of Supervisors chair.

Scott County requested the rating review from Moody's as part of a bond financing to expand the current recycling center and equip it to allow for single stream collection on behalf of the Waste Commission of Scott County. The higher credit rating is expected to save the Waste Commission approximately $150,000 in interest cost over the life of the bonds, according to Springsted Incorporated, the County's Municipal Advisor on the bond issuance.

Moody's cited a number of factors for the credit rating upgrade in its report, including:

• Healthy financial operations and demonstrated ability to adjust operations to meet budgetary constraints.

• Modest debt levels that are expected to continue given an accumulation of designated reserves for future capital projects.

• Proactive management practices and annual budgets that are consistently balanced or produce a positive balance.

"Credit rating upgrades have been extremely rare both in Iowa and across the Country as local governments have struggled through the Great Recession and the slow recovery. The fact that Scott County was able to strengthen its finances during that period is very impressive and something they should be very proud of," said Doug Green with Springsted Incorporated.

Thirty-six counties in Iowa currently have credit ratings with Moody's. Scott County joins Story County and Dallas County as the only other counties in the state with Aa1 credit ratings. Only two counties in the state - Polk and Linn - are rated higher with an Aaa rating by Moody's.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is highlighting diabetes risks and preventative measures during Diabetes Awareness Month, observed in November.
"The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that more than 827,000 adults in Illinois have been diagnosed with diabetes and each year more than 2,700 residents die from the disease," Smiddy said. "Diabetes claims lives through heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and can even cause blindness if left untreated and it's important to know the waning signs and ways to stay healthy.
According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States are living with diabetes, and 79 million are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.  One in three adults could develop some form of diabetes by 2050, if the current lifestyle and nutrition habits continue.
To combat the challenges facing the growing number of people with diabetes, Smiddy sponsored House Bill 1514, which would create a three-year diabetes prevention pilot program in Rock Island County through a partnership with local nonprofits and the Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS).  If the bill becomes law, HFS will chooses a provider and that nonprofit will receive Medicaid reimbursement for their effort to prevent diabetes in the community.
"This pilot program would be responsible for working with community groups and area health departments to assist the community in prevention and best practices for diabetes." Smiddy said. "Getting regular check-ups and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a healthy diet, can help save lives, and it is crucial that we understand that the healthy lifestyle choices we make can prevent or control diabetes."
For more information, please contact Smiddy's constituent service office at (309)-848-9098.
