Rauner appointed current Department of Agriculture Chief of Staff Warren Goetsch as Acting Director.  A search for a permanent replacement is underway.

Sen. Grassley made the following statement today regarding Pope Francis' visit to Washington, D.C.  The text of the statement can be found below and the video can be found here.

"This week, I had the second opportunity in my life to be in the presence of a pope.  This visit was an historic one.  Pope Francis made his first trip to the United States and a pope addressed Congress for the first time in history.

"I attended the White House ceremony on Wednesday welcoming the pope to our nation's capital.  The ceremony was spectacular, with more pomp and circumstance than even ceremonies for presidents of other countries.

"This morning, Pope Francis gave a strong speech that was well received by Congress.  He talked about the American spirit and the American dream.  America, as he says, is still a land of dreams for many people.  And he's right.

"He also talked about the state of our world today, how violent conflict seems to be increasing, and the challenges we as a nation and as a people face.  He said that these challenges call for a renewal of that 'spirit of cooperation' that has done so much good in our country's history.

"He mentioned four Americans who have contributed to this: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton, and spoke of their contributions to American society.

"I appreciated the opportunity to hear from Pope Francis.  Even if I don't agree with him on all matters, as fellow Christians we do see eye-to-eye on the essentials.  It was inspiring to hear a leader of such high esteem."

Teen events then take a chilling turn with a Horror Scavenger Hunt on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the 30/31 Branch. WASHINGTON - Senator Chuck Grassley joined a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to raise directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping concerns about China's delays in approving agricultural biotech products.

President Xi will be meeting with President Obama yet this week.  The U.S. is also hosting China in the inaugural U.S.-China Strategic Agricultural Innovation Dialogue, during which it's expected agricultural biotech issues will be discussed.

The senators wrote, "It is our understanding that there is a growing queue of biotechnology-derived crops under review within China's Ministry of Agriculture, creating additional regulatory uncertainty, and undermining commitments made last year to bolster science-based agricultural innovation and trade...We ask that you seek a commitment from President Xi to move forward with the queue of biotechnology products, including those awaiting final import approvals."

Iowa is a leader in agricultural biotechnology.  From innovative approaches to biofuels and agriculture technology to seed genetics and biosciences, the industry is seeing a high rate of growth in the state and is an important component of the state's economy.

James "Jimmy" Lange, a LeClaire Paramedic with Medic EMS, was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in October of 2014. This type of Leukemia is a long, drawn out type, and until symptoms get stronger, there is not much that can be done but monitoring. One day Jimmy went to the doctor and was basically told there is nothing he can do right now to help himself. Jimmy then said "I can do something, let's find a cure for leukemia!" He rallied a group of people on Facebook and now we have "Cure It With Corn". This is not a fundraiser for Jimmy. This is a fundraiser to raise money to help find a cure for leukemia, but this is Jimmy's brainchild. So, join us in celebrating life, and please help us find a cure.

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Library will host a new abstract art exhibit by Rock Island artist Elaine Shepherd Rexdale during October at the Main Library location.

Her exhibit, I Met a wo(Man) Who Wasn't There, is inspired by the poem Antigonish by Hughes Mearns. "Yesterday, upon the stair/I met a man who wasn't there./He wasn't there again today,/I wish, I wish he'd go away/When I came home last night at three,/The man was waiting there for me/But when I looked around the hall, I couldn't see him there at all! . . . "

Elaine Rexdale has worked in the educational field for her entire adult life. Her chosen career took her to Illinois, Louisiana and New York, before returning to make Rock Island her home. Inspiration comes from a life-long hobby of people watching, and the worlds of art and music. Her abstract acrylic paintings use bold strokes and bright colors to convey excitement and energy.

"For me, the visually most interesting is not in perfection, but imperfection," says Rexdale.  "I want viewers to experience the beauty of movement, design, and color, even if the message I'm attempting to convey is not immediately recognized,"

Rexdale regularly exhibits at Midcoast Fine Arts and Geneseo Art League, and recently completed a showing at Galesburg Civic Art Center. Her exhibit will be on display in the Rock Island Main Library's 2nd floor gallery space, 401 19th Street, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 31 during the day and in the evening during library programs.
