(April 1, 2015) ?The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make a difference in the lives of patients this spring by giving blood.

Donated blood is perishable and must be constantly replenished to keep up with the demand. Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals.

Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell donations yield twice the usual amount of red cells in a single appointment and are accepted at select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment.

Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year.

To find a donation opportunity or make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Clinton, IA (April 1, 2015) -  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton hosted another hilariously successful fundraiser, their Night of Laughs dueling pianos event, last Friday, March 27 at Gil's Restaurant and Ballroom.

Clinton area residents stepped up their game this year and helped Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton raise thousands of dollars towards their one-on-one youth mentoring programs.  Attendees at this year's fundraiser had a ball requesting and singing along to their favorite hits belted out by the Midwest Dueling Pianos and bidding on great silent auction prizes.

"It's the great generosity of Clinton area businesses and residents that enable us to continue to provide our outcome based youth mentoring programs to Clinton County and Fulton, IL youth facing adversity.  Without their generosity we wouldn't be able to provide support needed to help children succeed in life." Says Executive Director, Kellie Hillis.

On behalf of the staff, Board of Directors and the families we serve, we would like to thank:

  1. Gil's Restaurant and Ballroom for putting together a wonderful appetizer spread, great customer service and allowing us the use of the ballroom.
  2. Toyota, ADM, Ashford University, Clinton National Bank, Citizen's First Bank, Holiday Inn Express, LyondellBasell and Sethness Products for their contributions to our fundraiser. Their continued support shows how involved they are in the community and their dedication to our mission.
  3. All the area businesses that contributed items to our silent auction.
  4. And of course all those who attended the fundraiser.

We at Big Brothers Big Sisters are always looking for children ages 5-17 who could benefit from having an adult mentor in their lives. We also welcome adults and couples, 18 and over, who would like to have the life-changing experience of mentoring a young adult. Mentoring has been proven to help a child with life issues overcome obstacles and improve the odds they will graduate from high school.

Clinton, IA (April 1, 2015) - Distinguished community members, business leaders and generous citizens will drop everything that they are doing on Tuesday, April 7 to read one of their favorite children's books to area school children.  The activity is part of the United Way of Clinton County, Iowa's Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) week.

Firefighters, public safety officers, mentors, business leaders and others will read a book to elementary students at Eagle Heights, Jefferson and Whittier Elementary schools in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of reading in everyone's lives.  Reading out loud at least 20 minutes a day cultivates listening skills, improves spelling, expands vocabulary, improves diction and expression, improves visual memory and is the best exercise you can do to improve your mind.

"Reading out loud is a great way to sharpen your focus and theirs," says Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton's Executive Director Kellie Hillis.  "We've got a handful of excited and eager readers lined-up and could always use more."  If you would like to volunteer a few minutes or an hour to read to children on April 7, please email director@bbbsclinton.org.

This activity is just one of the many activities planned through United Way of Clinton County, Iowa and its partner agencies during Drop Everything And Read Week April 6-12.  For more information on all the activities, please visit the United Way of Clinton County, Iowa's Facebook page.

$22.3 million waiting to be claimed by residents of Henry, Mercer, Rock Island and Whiteside Counties

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois State Treasurer's Office is searching for tens of thousands of Northern Illinois residents who have unclaimed property. Through the I-Cash program, the treasurer's office safeguards more than $2.1 billion in unclaimed property belonging to millions of Illinois residents. Hundreds of thousands of new properties have been reported in recent months, including lost bank accounts, insurance policy proceeds, and utility refunds. Those new reports bring the total available to be claimed by residents of Henry, Mercer, Rock Island and Whiteside counties to $22,353,481 from 114,077 properties as of January.

"We want to return this property to its rightful owners," Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs said. "Whether it is a savings account someone started for you as a child, or U.S. savings bonds from World War II that your grandparents forgot about in a safe deposit box, the proper place for these items is with their rightful owners."

Starting April 5th, names of 78,895 individuals who have unclaimed property worth more than $100 or stock, bonds, mutual funds, or safe deposit box contents that was reported over the past six months will be featured in newspapers ads across Illinois. Those listings represent a fraction of the 14 million properties reported since the program began in 1962 that are waiting to be claimed. All Illinoisans are encouraged to visit illinoistreasurer.gov to search for property and initiate a claim in as little as three minutes. Once the claim is filed with proof of ownership, individuals will receive their property in as little as three weeks. Last year, the average amount returned was $1,000.

Hundreds of thousands of new properties are collected from businesses by the State Treasurer's I-Cash program each year, so residents are encouraged to check the State Treasurer's I-Cash database every six months. For more information about the State Treasurer's I-Cash program, visit illinoistreasurer.gov or call 217-785-6998.
