Molly Brown: More Than Unsinkable

survivor of the Titanic shipwreck disaster of 1912, but also a social reformer who fought for the rights of women, children, and workers. All Iowa Reads Author Robin Oliveira

Meet 2015 All Iowa Reads author Robin Oliveira as she discusses her novel My Name is Mary Sutter on Thursday, April 23 at noon. Robin will share her inspiration to write this Civil War era novel, her research process, and the historical and fictional characters that bring her story to life. She will also share her discoveries from her eight years of research and writing, including slides and photos of rare Civil War hospital artifacts from the National Archives. The Be Healthy QC Worksite Wellness Workgroup of the Quad City Health Initiative (QCHI) is pleased to announce the launch of their Be Healthy QC Workplace Recognition Program and recognize an initial group of 8 organizations. This program was designed to highlight the work of local businesses and organizations and to bring awareness to workplace wellness. By recognizing organizations that create a healthier workplace, the Be Healthy QC Worksite Wellness Workgroup strives to create an overall culture of health within the community. Among the first organizations to receive recognition are Davenport Community Schools, Genesis Health System, MetroLINK, Royal Neighbors of America, Scott County, Scott County Family Y, Two Rivers YMCA and UnityPoint Health - Trinity.

All organizations interested in applying for recognition are invited to complete the "Be Healthy QC: Creating a Healthy Workplace Assessment". The brief assessment identifies worksites in Rock Island and Scott Counties that are choosing to implement evidenced-based best practices promoting physical activity, nutrition, tobacco cessation and/or overall employee health and well-being. The assessment is intended to be completed by human resource or administrative staff at worksites in the Quad Cities. Instructions and the assessment can be found at www.behealthyqc.org.

Be Healthy QC is a community wide effort to create a culture of health that supports healthy eating and active living. DES MOINES, IA (03/17/2015)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair invites all community and youth groups, special interest clubs and businesses to join the fun and enter the State Fair Parade, Iowa's largest parade and the kick-off to the Fair. The parade is set for Wednesday, August 12. Fair Tour 2015 embarks August 13-23.

Entries postmarked later than July 1 must include a $15 late fee. No entries will be accepted after July 15.

Entries will be judged and winners will receive plaques in each of the following categories: best use of Fair theme, best specialty group, most creative/original, Governor's Cup (best overall marching band), marching band (by class), best performance, best horses and best drum line.

The parade will begin at 6:15 p.m. in downtown Des Moines. Spectators will be able to watch an estimated 200 floats, animals, vehicles, novelty and performing units. Staging will take place at the State Capitol Complex. Parade entrants will then travel west on Grand Avenue to 13th Street. Dispersion will take place between 13th and 18th Streets.

Highlights of the gala event will be re-broadcast on parade night throughout central Iowa on KDSM FOX 17 beginning at 10 p.m. To be considered for television coverage, the description information on the application must be completed and returned. Due to the length of the parade, it is not possible for all entries to be televised.

PR Network of the Quad Cities will recognize a member with the inaugural Marketer of the Year award at Half Day Workshop April 21.

Rock Island, Ill. (March 17, 2015) - For the first time, PR Network of the Quad Cities will honor a member with a Marketer of the Year award. The award was created this year to highlight the accomplishments of marketing and PR professionals in the Quad Cities.

Award Description

Based on a nomination process, the Marketer of the Year award is the most prestigious honor awarded to a member of the association and honors outstanding accomplishments in the field of marketing and public relations in the Quad Cities.

Nominees are solicited from PR Network members, but you do not need to be a PR Network member (or a marketing professional) to nominate someone. After all nominations are collected, a committee will select the winner.

Eligibility

Individuals must be a PR Network member and be on the membership list as of April 1, 2015, have at least three years of experience in the field and have clear leadership and ownership of the work they are submitting; those holding marketing or PR positions or leading creative projects are preferred. 

"When the board sat down last fall for a brainstorming session on how to improve our organization, we discussed the importance of recognizing the hard work marketing and PR professionals put into our community," said Monica Wolfe, PR Network President. "We're asking for nominations for this award, hoping to bring attention to the brain power, time and passion marketing and PR professionals dedicate to their jobs and the Quad Cities."

Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. (HMHI) will hold its Spring semi-annual Fresh Start Benefit Sale Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25  from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The sale is at the HMHI office and donation center located at 3805 Mississippi Avenue, Davenport.

This sale continues a 25 year tradition of providing a large selection of gently used or new items, all in working condition, including house wares, bedding, toys, jewelry, gift items, furniture, books, games, clothing and much more.  This sale is known for the quality of items, the great values and the friendly staff.

Donations for this sale can be dropped off Monday through Friday any time between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Humility of Mary Housing has 47 apartments that are used for families in the program and there is a great need for single beds, dressers and sofas to help furnish these apartments.  These items can also be taken to the office and donation center.    Donations are accepted throughout the year.

Donated items that cannot be used to furnish apartments or by the families are put in the sale and all proceeds are used by Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. to purchase beds and dressers and other program needs.  Through the program lives get turned around, children learn there is a different way to live and parents are provided with opportunities upon which they build the foundation for a greater future for their families.

City Circle Acting Company of Coralville is holding auditions for the June 19-21 production of The Addams Family on March 28 and 29. Auditions are from2pm-6pm at Community of Christ Church, 2121 South Ridge Drive in Coralville. Teens currently in grades 7-12 are encouraged to visit citycircle.org to learn more and sign up for an audition slot.  

Auditioners should prepare 32 bars of a contemporary song from musical theater and a short contemporary monologue and bring sheet music in the appropriate key.

City Circle Acting Company is the community theater program of the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts. Since 1997, City Circle's mission has been the production of high quality dramatic, musical, and performing art pieces for the enjoyment of the public.
