1st Lt. Benjamin Morin spent three and a half years as a Prisoner of War, later ordained as a priest

SPRINGFIELD, IL (04/27/2015)(readMedia)-- 1st Lt. Benjamin Morin, the first U.S. tank commander to engage enemy forces in World War II and the last surviving officer of the National Guard's famed 192nd Tank Battalion, has died at a retirement home for Catholic priests in Michigan.

Morin died Thursday, April 23, of natural causes at the Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Michigan. He was 94 years old. After his service in the Philippines' and Japan during World War II, Morin returned home to Maywood, was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1946 and worked as a missionary in Peru for 38 years.

"Meeting him, I felt completely humbled," said Maj. David Pond of the Illinois National Guard's 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Pond and five other Soldiers traveled to Michigan in 2012 to present Morin with the Armor Association of the United States Army's Order of Saint George Medallion. "Here's a gentleman that endured unspeakable horrors at the hands of others, but he wouldn't speak a bad word about anyone. The most he would say about his Japanese captors was 'They were not the nicest people.'"

Morin enlisted into the Illinois National Guard's 33rd Tank Company in 1937. The company was based in his hometown of Maywood, Illinois. The 33rd Tank Company was called to federal service in the fall of 1940 and re-designated as Company B, 192nd Tank Battalion. The battalion was comprised of National Guard units from Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Kentucky. It trained in Kentucky and Louisiana before deployed to the Philippines' in 1941.

The battalion arrived in the Philippines' on Thanksgiving Day, 1941. On Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the battalion was attacked by enemy aircraft. Three days before Christmas, 1941, Morin's tank platoon attacked enemy forces who had landed in the Philippines', making it the first U.S. tank engagement of World War II. With his main gun inoperable, his tank disabled and on fire, the other tanks in his platoon withdrawing, and four enemy tanks bearing down on him and his crew; 2nd Lt. Morin was forced to surrender himself and his Soldiers.

What followed was three and a half years as a Prisoner of War under the most appalling conditions imaginable, Morin and his fellow prisoners endured constant beatings, disease, lice, and malnutrition. For more information on 2nd Lt. Morin's experience in World War II, please visit the Proviso East High School's history project on the 192nd Tank Battalion at http://www.proviso.k12.il.us/Bataan%20Web/Morin.htm.

Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Bowman, the Illinois National Guard's Land Component Command Sergeant Major, grew up near Maywood and remembers hearing about the valor of the 192nd Tank Battalion. "Last week, the Illinois Army National Guard lost a hero," he said. "I remember all the time I spent playing on the M3 Stuart Tank by the memorial. I was told the story of the unit's bravery."

"Lt. Morin was a leader. He was a first sergeant as the unit left San Francisco for the Philippines and promoted to second lieutenant after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He and his comrades were all proud tankers. Illinois Army National Guard tankers the first to make contact with the Japanese."

To those who knew him, Morin was always an optimist.

"The things I remember about Ben was his sense of humor. He had a great wit. There was always a sparkle in his eye. He (was) an extremely kind person," said Jim Opolony, the history teacher at Proviso East High School who led the 192nd Tank Battalion history project.

Maywood has held a ceremony in September honoring the 192nd Tank Battalion for more than 70 years. It was started during World War II by the mothers of the battalion's missing Soldiers. The lineage of the 33rd Tank Company lives today in the Illinois Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

LOCATION: Union Station, 102 S. Harrison St., Davenport, IA

The Davenport RAGBRAI Committee will unveil the Davenport 2015 RAGBRAI logo and provide additional details about the Credit Island dip site when RAGBRAI ends in Davenport on Saturday, July 25.  The briefing will be held outside Union Station on the south (river) side of the building.  Members of the committee and public officials will be available for questions after the briefing.

Rock Island, IL: Learn about the role of Davenport's Credit Island in local and national history, and its recent rejuvenation, with a free history presentation at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 14 at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street,. Rock Island.

Davenport Parks and Recreation Director Scott Hock will discuss the history of one of Davenport's oldest and most iconic public spaces, including its recognition as an official War of 1812 battleground site and the rebuilding of the historic 1923 Credit Island Lodge.

In the past year, the City of Davenport dedicated both the new lodge and a monument to recognize the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Credit Island. One of very few battles on the Upper Mississippi, the Credit Island conflict marked one of the last (and unsuccessful) efforts by the Americans to wrest control of the Upper Mississippi from the British. It's also significant for the heavy involvement of the 800 to 1,200 Native Americans, including Black Hawk, who fought alongside a handful of British soldiers. The British side far out-numbered the 334 Americans led by future president Zachary Taylor.

Hock will discuss more about the battle's significance and its affect on British/Native American relations, as well as talking about the more recent history of the Credit Island Lodge. The Lodge was built in 1923 and almost completely destroyed by flood and fire in May 2013. Hock will talk about the rebuilding and rejuvenation project, which was funded with about $1.5 million in insurance money. Hock will be joined by Nate Brown, president of the Friends of Credit Island, who will also discuss the role of his group in supporting improvements to the park.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information about Rock Island Library services and programs, visit the library's online branch at www.rockislandlibrary.org, call 309-732-READ or follow the library on Facebook or Twitter.

Fitness Xpress is working with schools in the Quad-Cities area as part of the Project 10 Schools Program to educate local overweight students and their parents in exercise, proper meal planning, and nutrition.
Glenview Middle School in East Moline, IL, is the first school to work with Fitness Xpress. Children with dietary problems are receiving high-protein meals from ViSalus, as well as exercise and guidance. Fitness Xpress will also be offering guidance to the parents of many of these children.
"We've also added Woodrow Wilson Middle School and more will follow," VanGilder said. "We have 14 kids at Glenview and eight at Wilson who are on the program. The Glenview kids have been on the program since February 23 and have reported losses of 4 to 20 pounds." She added that Fitness Xpress plans to arrange sponsorship for at least 1,000 kids in the Project 10 Schools Program.
It's not difficult to see the link between malnutrition and thin, hungry children. But, overweight children can be malnourished, too. As the Huffington Post article, 'How Malnutrition Causes Obesity,' states: "Americans are overfed and undernourished ... the most obese children and adults in the country are also the most nutritionally deficient."
"If we don't help today's children to lose weight," said Dana VanGilder, General Manager of Fitness Xpress, "the next generation may be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than the previous one. A healthier future needs to begin today."
In January of this year, Fitness Xpress was part of ViSalus' World's Largest Simultaneous Group Workout, an initiative which was held in 11 countries. "The goal was to set a Guinness World Record and we did it," VanGilder said.
For every person who participated in the event, ViSalus donated 30 kids' meals through their Project 10 Kids program. VanGilder and the Fitness Xpress team are working to distribute the meals earned by the event as part of a long-term plan to help malnourished, overweight children in the Quad-Cities.
ViSalus Sciences is a national healthy lifestyle company which has developed a platform for achieving weight-loss and fitness results by encouraging participants to concentrate on losing just 10 pounds at a time. The kids meals being distributed are part of the ViSalus line of nutritional products. Because they are fortified with essential nutrients, they serve as an excellent dietary supplement for the children.
Setting A World Record
The World's Largest Simultaneous Group Workout was held through 2,180 groups worldwide, with 15,180 participants. Fitness Xpress hosted a total of 204 participants. ViSalus raised 455,400 meals for children worldwide, and 6,120 of those meals were raised by Fitness Xpress. The meals provided by ViSalus are easily transported and non-perishable - essential factors for the success of the program.
The meals from ViSalus started arriving in the Quad-Cities in mid-February. "Many children are eating too much fast food and other high-fat, high-carb choices with lots of empty calories," VanGilder said. "With the ViSalus meals, we can be sure the children are receiving the full spectrum of essential nutrients. We will be meeting with many of the children's families to discuss healthy eating habits."
Educating The Community
In addition to providing area children with nutritious meals, Fitness Xpress will also be working with schools in the Quad-Cities area as part of the Project 10 Schools Program to educate local overweight students and their parents in exercise, proper meal planning, and nutrition.
Glenview Middle School in East Moline, IL, is the first school to work with Fitness Xpress. Children with dietary problems are receiving the ViSalus meals, as well as exercise and guidance. Fitness Xpress will also be offering guidance to the parents of many of these children.
"We've also added Woodrow Wilson Middle School and more will follow," VanGilder said. "We have 14 kids at Glenview and eight at Wilson who are on the program. The Glenview kids have been on the program since February 23 and have reported losses of 4 to 20 pounds. The Wilson kids have had two personal training sessions so far." She added that Fitness Xpress plans to arrange sponsorship for at least 1,000 kids in the Project 10 Schools Program.
"Our Project 10 weight-loss coaches are designing the program to work with school menus," VanGilder said. "They encourage the kids to be selective about what they eat, and use the high-protein, low-fat ViSalus cereal or shakes as an alternative, when suitable. Many kids have the cereal or shakes first thing in the morning as a protein boost and still eat healthy breakfast items at school. In the evening, they may use the shakes again. The shakes taste great, so they seem more like a treat than a nutritional supplement."
VanGilder noted that Fitness Xpress is looking for students they can help. "If you have a child who has been classified with a 'BMI for age' of 27 or higher, or a 'BMI percentile' of 90th or higher, they can apply for the Project 10 Schools Program," she said. "Parents are encouraged to contact us for more information."
Fitness Xpress is a locally owned fitness club, headquartered at 4200 24th Ave., Moline IL. To learn more about Fitness Xpress and the Project 10 Schools Program, call 309-797-3150 or visit fx247.com.

LeClaire, Iowa, April 27, 2015 - There are not many flavors more quintessential to the Quad Cities than Boetje's Mustard. Now with the help of a local distillery, this classic is getting a new twist. This Friday, Boetje's and Mississippi River Distilling Company will have the second release of their new collaboration. "Boetje's Bourbon Barrel Aged Mustard" has soaked for over a month in used Cody Road Bourbon casks.

"We were looking for ways to put a new twist on an old favorite," said Boetje's production manager Harrison Kropp. "We saw some interesting barrel aged mustards at the World-Wide Mustard Competition in Wisconsin last year. So we thought it would be great to give it a try with Boetje's."

Ryan Burchett, owner and distiller at Mississippi River Distilling Company, said he didn't have to think twice about the project. "It was a total no-brainer for us. We were humbled to have such an established brand like Boetje's reach out to us for something like this. It's an honor to have our name on the same label as one of our all time favorites."

The distillery gave Kropp some oak whiskey casks that had been used to age Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey. After soaking for more than 30 days in the barrel, the mustard is ground and prepared for sale.  "It brings a unique sweetness to our mustard along with the signature Boetje's punch," added Kropp.  "This one is going to be a big hit once the grills start firing up."

"Our brand is all about being local," said Burchett. "Cody Road Bourbon is made from grain sourced directly from local farmers within 25 miles of our distillery. So to find a new local partner to do something totally different like this is a ton of fun for us."

The mustard is being made in small batches. So small that the first release of this product sold out in less than one hour back in March. "We knew people would be excited about it, but we had no idea it would be this crazy," said Kropp. Burchett added, "We had people lined down the street for the first release and still ran out before everybody got some. So we immediately took more barrels over to Boetje's so they could increase production."

Initially it will only be available at the gift shops at Boetje's and Mississippi River Distilling Company while supplies last. The hope is that by later this year, it will be a product that will be on the shelf regularly. Boetje's representatives will be at the distillery Friday night from 5:30-8pm for the monthly "First Friday" celebration in LeClaire. They will have the mustard for sale along with free samples of the new spicy treat.

Mississippi River Distilling Company also will have sweet and savory food samples made with their spirits, special "cocktails of the month," and free pint glass with spirit purchase.

Other fun things will be going on including some of the shops staying open late, food and drink specials at the restaurants, live music at The Faithful Pilot Café and Spirits with Brad Brenny starting at 7:30pm, and wine tasting at Wide River Winery Tasting Room.
