PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (June 2, 2015) - The Riceville High School team of Kaleb Tweite and Kyler Bauer brought 8 pounds, 6 ounces to the scale Sunday to win the 2015 Iowa State High School Fishing Championship on the Mississippi River. The win earned the team the title of state champions and qualified the team to compete in the High School Fishing Central Conference championship on Lake Carlyle in September.
It wasn't the largest field in the 2015 TBF/FLW High School State Championship Series, but there was no lack of effort between the two teams that competed for the title. In the end, the Riceville Wildcat duo narrowly edged out runner-ups Sheldon Spears and Noah Clark of Prairie City-Monroe High School who finished in second with 7 pounds, 14 ounces.
Complete results can be found at HighSchoolFishing.org.
The 2015 Iowa State High School Fishing Championship was a two-person (team) event open to students in grades 7-12. The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship along with the top three teams from each of the seven TBF/FLW High School Fishing Opens held this season. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2016. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world's largest high school bass tournament, the 2015 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama, on July 8-11. At the 2014 World Finals more than $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded. Visit HighSchoolFishing.org for details.

Bettendorf - The Quad Cities hosts the 200 attendees of the Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars State Convention on June 4-7, 2015, at the Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf.

As part of the State Convention, Senator Lindsey Graham will speak to attendees on Saturday at 9 a.m.  At the opening session on Friday at 8 a.m., Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher and U.S. Congressman Dave Loebsack will be there.

The last time the Quad Cities hosted the Iowa VFW State Convention was in 1991 and 1992.  The location is determined by the home of the State Commander.  Christian Popp is from the Bettendorf area and is a member of the VFW Post 9128 in Bettendorf, Iowa.  In 2012, the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (QCCVB) met with the Iowa VFW Office and learned that Christian Popp was going to be State Commander in 2015.  They urged us to begin working on a location to host the state convention and the QCCVB has worked closely with Christian Popp & Penny Hurt (Ladies Auxiliary Incoming President) to plan many aspects of this convention.

The QCCVB estimates the local economic impact is over $80,000.

The Department of Iowa VFW is an organization that supports Veterans and their families with providing a voice to the National VFW to make sure that the Veterans that fought in Wars in the past and the Veterans that will fight in Wars in the future have the benefits and support of a grateful nation.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is sponsoring legislation to give victims of domestic violence more time to pay their utility bill when relocating following abuse.
"The financial cost of moving from an abusive living arrangement can keep people in dangerous situations," Smiddy said. "As state leaders, we need to take steps to reduce the financial hardships of victims, and allowing additional time to establish initial payments is a great first step."
Smiddy is cosponsoring Senate Bill 1645 which lets victims of abuse have more time to make the initial deposit to set up utility services. The violence must be certified by medical personnel, a law enforcement agency, a State's Attorney, the Attorney General or a domestic violence shelter. The deposit must eventually be paid, but the measure allows people in stressful situations additional time to get out of abusive environments quickly and safely.
"Domestic violence and abuse is an unfortunate reality that affects many communities and many families," Smiddy said. "This bill can make escaping from abuse just a little easier, and I'll continue to support measures to support victims in their most desperate time."
Senate Bill 1645 passed both houses of the General Assembly unanimously and now awaits signature from the Governor.

STREAM FINE ASSES 7" VIA PUNKTASTIC

If Fitzcarraldo attempted to move a steamship over a peruvian hill without any promise of rubber or Lewis and Clark had set out west for no reason other than "to see if they could make it" then Chicago's "ugly-pop" duo Tinkerbelles would fit rather nicely in the same nonsensical category. Expecting to play a whopping 40 shows in 10 days, Tinkerbelles will be touring through the midwest June 19th - 28th on The Lagunita's Brewing Company Sponsored "40 Walls Tour".

"We did some research and couldn't find anything on a record yet so we figured we'd try to set the bar sort-to-speak." says drummer/singer Christian Dawson about the record for highest frequency of shows in a 10 day period. "I can imagine show #36 or #37 will get pretty grim." he laughs. "Shit! By show 13 I'll be tapping out for sure!" bassist/singer Adam Mohundro responds with a shit eating grin. They'll be filming the endeavor for an upcoming doc if you can't make it out, but I'd strongly advise to at least check out their limited edition "asparagus scented piss-colored" 7" vinyl Fine Asses ep as I'm sure they'll be non-existent after this tour. Regardless of whether they make it or not, it'd be worth seeing the human-beings in Tinkerbelles turn into gelatinous slime by June 29th.

The unpredictable nature of water media fused with powerful design principles will be featured at the Beréskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio during the month of July, with an exhibit of local artist Robert Zeidler's transparent watercolor paintings. Bob has worked in the graphic arts field and advertising for over 40 years and you can definitely see the influence in his paintings. Because of that background, his style translates well into the transparent watercolor medium, with emphasis on simplified, bold, colorful shapes.

As an example, he chooses one painting in the collection to showcase his process. Included are a black & white compositional sketch, a quick gestural thumbnail, several "warm-up" paintings, and then the finished piece where it all comes together in a semi-abstract style. It's interesting to understand his methodology and how he manages to "loosen up before the performance" as he puts it.

About his color choices, Zeidler says, "I don't really think about it much." Interesting, since they are unusual and hard to describe. He goes on, "If my composition is strong and the values are arranged correctly, I can use about any color I want. Sometimes I use only two colors; other times I use them all. That's half the fun of watercolor. Since the paint is fluid, it creates new colors on its own; colors that I could never mix or even imagine left to my own devices. This helps keep the painting fresh and interesting, as well as allowing the viewer to see something new each time."

Robert Zeidler lives in Davenport, Iowa, and is a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society. He's had paintings accepted in national juried competitions, and received many awards.

The Beréskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio is located in the Bucktown Center for the Arts, 225 East 2nd Street, Suite 104, in Davenport, Iowa, and is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 11am to 6 pm; open until 9 pm every Final Friday. For additional information contact Gallery Director Pat Bereskin, bereskinartgallery@gmail.com or at www.bereskinartgallery.com Telephone is 563-508-4630.
