Verizon HopeLine cell phone drive helps domestic violence survivors

CHICAGO – Oct. 28, 2014. Lt. Governor Sheila Simon brought her office's fourth annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month cell phone drive to a successful conclusion with the presentation of two $5,000 donations from Verizon's HopeLine program to the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois and Chicago-based Connections for Abused Women and their Children.

"Organizations like these help survivors to protect their families and themselves as they get back on their feet after abusive relationships," Simon said. "Each year, Domestic Violence Awareness Month is about educating ourselves about domestic violence. I hope this has called some attention to the issue, and I know that the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, and Connections for Abused Women and their Children will use this money to help those who most need it."

Collected phones will be donated to Verizon's HopeLine program. Phones will be refurbished and sold, with the proceeds going to support local domestic violence shelters and programs. The program also provides domestic violence agencies with wireless phones and airtime for use by domestic violence victims. If a phone can't be refurbished, it will be recycled in an environmentally sound way.

"Verizon is dedicated to supporting organizations like Connections and the Violence Prevention Center," said Mike McMahon, director of business sales, Verizon Wireless. "We applaud their important contribution to our community to help victims and raise awareness of the pervasive problem of domestic violence."

Based in Belleville, the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois provides shelter and other services to domestic violence survivors in St. Clair, Monroe and Randolph Counties. The donation will be used to support the services provided by the Center's legal advocacy program, said Lisa Chilton, Director of Legal Advocacy for the Violence Prevention Center.

"The Violence Prevention Center is grateful to Verizon for this financial gift because of how it will help eliminate the barriers a domestic violence survivor faces when trying to get to safety," Chilton said. "We know lack of resources and legal assistance become barriers to safety. These additional resources will allow victims to get to safety and for the community to focus on the more important question:  "How can we stop this abuser from abusing?"

Half of the proceeds from the drive will also go toward Connections for Abused Women and Children (CAWC). Based in Chicago, the group provides domestic violence relief services to families in need. CAWC Executive Director Stephanie Love-Patterson said the cell phone drive is important and timely.

"On behalf of the board of directors and staff of Connections for Abused Women and their Children, we appreciate the generous gift from Verizon," Love-Patterson said. "These funds will help CAWC to continue to provide life-saving services and work toward our mission of ending domestic violence. We greatly value community partners like you!"

As Lt. Governor, Simon's office has collected more than 4,000 used cell phones to help benefit survivors of domestic violence. Simon's office also launched the Virtual Legal Clinic, a program aimed at providing free, confidential legal consultation to domestic violence survivors in rural and underserved counties. The program, which will continue under the purview of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, connects survivors to lawyers with expertise in family law via internet technology.

SUPPLEMENTAL COMPLAINT

The American Democracy Legal Fund files this complaint with the Federal Election Commission (the "FEC" or "Commission") under 2 U.S.C. § 437g(a)(1) against the above named respondents (collectively "Respondents") for numerous violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended (the "Act").  This complaint supplements a previous complaint submitted to the Commission on October 14, 2014, regarding millions of dollars in illegal "coordinated communications" facilitated through the ongoing, real-time exchange of non-public strategic campaign and party data with groups making purportedly "independent" expenditures (the "Complaint").

As detailed in the Complaint, the RNC has created a for-profit entity, the Data Trust, charged with maintaining and sharing a vast database of information about hundreds of millions of Americans for Republican parties and campaigns.  The Data Trust not only operates the RNC's voter file, however, but also provides the same data to American Crossroads, Crossroads GPS, and numerous other outside organizations that are legally required to operate independently of the Republican Party and its candidates.  Moreover, the RNC and the Data Trust have recently partnered with i360, a data management firm that supplies voter information to other conservative organizations, including the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity ("AFP"), one of the largest outside organizations supporting the Republican Party.

The Data Trust and i360 have implemented technical upgrades that allow the RNC, Republican campaigns, and any outside groups subscribing to either the Data Trust's or i360's voter database to not only "access voter information anytime . . . but update it instantly, so others viewing the voter lists can see the information immediately."[1] According to the terms of Data Trust/i360  partnership,

Clients of either The Data Trust or i360 can improve the data shared with all clients.  For example, if a client of either company conducting voter outreach identifies a voter attribute or preference, clients of the other organization will benefit from that information.  As a result, conservative groups and campaigns will have more information about voters at their disposal for their own activities than ever before.[2]

MOLINE, Ill. (October 28, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards have acquired forward Mario Lamoureux from the Ontario Reign in exchange for future considerations, the Mallards announced today.

Lamoureux, 26, scored 20 goals and totaled 40 points in 46 games with the Ontario Reign last season after starting the campaign in Austria with VSV EC, for whom he scored once and added an assist in four games.  Lamoureux also played three American Hockey League games for the Oklahoma City Barons last year.

"Mario is the center I was looking for to complement our top wingers," said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski.  "He's a guy who's productive and very talented.  I like his attitude because he wants to come here and win."

Lamoureux was named to the 2012-13 ECHL All-Rookie Team after scoring 25 times and notching 65 points in 71 games for the Reign.  The 5' 9", 185-pound native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, broke into the professional ranks at the tail end of the 2011-12 season when he played two games for the Gwinnett Gladiators.

Lamoureux played college hockey in his home town for perennial power North Dakota.  UND qualified for the NCAA tournament each of Lamoureux's four seasons and in 2011 reached the Frozen Four.  He also helped North Dakota to three consecutive Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament titles and a pair of conference regular season crowns.  Lamoureux scored 17 goals and produced 46 points in 157 career collegiate games.

Also today, the ECHL announced earlier that Mallards forward Todd Fiddler has been suspended for one game after being assessed a major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct in the Mallards' game against the Rapid City Rush last Saturday and as a result will miss tonight's game between the Mallards and Rush in Rapid City.

The Mallards next play at home Friday evening - Halloween night- at 7:05 against the Cincinnati Cyclones.  Kids 12 and under wearing Halloween costumes to next Friday's tilt will receive free tickets to that game.  Next Friday is also another $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X and MetroLINK.  $1 hot dogs and beer are available at iWireless Center concession stands during all Mallards Friday night home games.

Single game tickets for all remaining Mallards regular season home games- including Friday's- are on sale now at the iWireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.comand Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.  The box office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.  Tickets are available for $10, $16, $20 and $28.

Boone, IA - October 29, 2014, Bruce Braley will continue to highlight his plans to fight for all Iowa families, not just the wealthiest few, at canvass kickoffs and grassroots events in Boone and Marshalltown.

Braley will meet with local volunteers and grassroots organizers and encourage all Iowans to vote early. Voting early is the simplest and easiest way to cast a ballot. Iowans can vote early in person from now until November 3. For more information about early voting locations, visit vote.brucebraley.com.

While Bruce works to put Iowa families first, Joni Ernst has made it clear that she stands with millionaires, billionaires and special interests with her out-of-step plans to privatize Social Security, end federal student aid, and protect tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. In contrast, Bruce is fighting to protect and strengthen Social Security, reduce the burden of college costs, and fight for tax breaks for the middle class.

Later in the day, Braley will be joined by Hillary Rodham Clinton for grassroots events in Cedar Rapids and Davenport.

Lisle, Ill., Oct. 28, 2014 - KONE Inc, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, today announced the first North American installation of KONE JumpLift technology in One Bloor, Great Gulf's flagship high-rise condominium under construction in Toronto.

KONE JumpLift, which has already been installed in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, China and Australia, is an advanced, self-climbing elevator that operates during construction in a building's permanent hoistway.  KONE JumpLift uses a mobile machine room that moves upward as the construction progresses.  The technology can improve safety and efficiency on job sites and can enable buildings to be completed months ahead of traditional construction timelines.

Great Gulf and KONE are collaborating on the project, which will deliver high-end retail and residential units in Toronto's Bloor-Yorkville area, and is expected to be completed in 2016.

"KONE technology and innovative design techniques are changing the way buildings are built across the globe," said Larry Wash, CEO of KONE Americas. "This collaboration with Great Gulf is helping us meet demand in the resurgence of high-rise construction in Toronto."

The KONE JumpLift technology includes the following benefits:

·         Less Wait Time: Operating at speeds up to 800 fpm (4m/s), five times faster than a traditional external hoist used in construction, KONE JumpLift is able to move construction workers to their floors in a faster, safer way.

·         Safer Transportation: With all transportation activities taking place inside in a dry and windproof shaft, construction workers can safely move throughout the building regardless of weather conditions, allowing building construction to proceed unhindered.

·         Construction Efficiency: Using the building's permanent elevator hoistway for construction use, completed floors can be put into action while allowing the installation to continue above.

·         Faster Delivery: When the building structure is completed, changing over to the permanent elevator is a straightforward matter of installing the final machinery and finishing the material surfaces of the elevator car, landing doors and signalization.

"Great Gulf always looks for innovation in design and construction. One Bloor, recently recognized by the International Property Awards as the best hi-rise condominium in North America, is one of the most significant buildings being built in Toronto," said Christopher Wein, President Great Gulf Residential. "The KONE JumpLift provides real value and this elevator technology will help the entire construction project to proceed more efficiently and safely for everyone working on site."

'The Michael Jordan of Lung Surgery' Lists Principles that Reliably Yield Success

As we enter the year's final quarter, Dr. Robert J. Cerfolio, a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, says it's never too early to think about self-improvement for the New Year ... and this year.

"Habitual procrastination can really hurt you in the long run because waiting to take care of something that's obviously important to you - health, money, family matters - weighs on your subconscious," says Dr. Cerfolio, known as "the Michael Jordan of lung surgery."

Understanding one's personal "line of gratification" is the foundation for sticking to self-improvement goals, he says.

"There are many kinds of lines of gratification," he says. "For some, they're the number of zeroes in their bank statement; for others, the curves of their muscles after they leave the gym. It's good and healthy to look back on your hard work and admire what you have accomplished before moving on to the next task."

Dr. Cerfolio, author of "Super Performing at Work and at Home: The Athleticism of Surgery and Life," shares tips on how to make those lines of gratification more impressive.

•  Be an early riser. The main reason operating rooms hum into action at 7 a.m. is tied to human physiology; the bodies of patients are better able to handle the stress of surgery at that time.

"People are generally better off getting work done early in the day when we're better prepared for stress and performance," he says. "And getting a job done early frees you up later in the day."

•  Love what you do. Why wouldn't you want to take ownership, responsibility and pride in what you do for a living? When you treat a job as only a means to a paycheck, you are missing the point. If your job isn't the one you'd really love to have, don't make it worse with a negative attitude. Instead, make it your own. Make it a point of personal integrity and principle to challenge yourself to achieve something every day. After all, 40 hours a week is a long time to stay anywhere.

•  Ask yourself: Did I really try my best? "I tried my best" is a common refrain from those who haven't reached their goals. An honest response you can ask yourself is, "Am I sure?" This question is not about being overly critical. It's simply about realizing that, if you had practiced or studied an extra 10 minutes each day, you would've been that much closer to your goals.

•  Set specific, measurable goals. Results define goals. Every individual should have clear goals that are objective and measurable. Goals such as "to be happy," "to do well at work" or "to get along" are too nebulous. To be successful, you have to be able to define your goals by measurable results.

•  Find the high ground. In anything you do, aspire to live up to the noblest, highest aspect of your job. Certain jobs - such as police work, firefighting, teaching or working in health care - are service oriented, so it's easier to feel good about your contributions. Look for the contributions you're making in your job and take pride in what you're doing to make the world a little better.

•  Be the go-to guy or girl. This takes time, practice and the confidence necessary to want the ball in a critical situation. Being the go-to guy or girl means being willing to take responsibility and risk failing. A go-to person is also willing to speak up about problems or changes necessary in a business or organization, and suggest solutions.

The author of "Super Performing at Work and at Home," Cerfolio, who was a First Team Academic All-American baseball player in college, is a world-renowned chest surgeon and recognized as one of the busiest and best thoracic surgeons in the world.

Voting machines that switch Republican votes to Democrats are being reported in Maryland.

"When I first selected my candidate on the electronic machine, it would not put the 'x' on the candidate I chose ? a Republican ? but it would put the 'x' on the Democrat candidate above it," Donna Hamilton said.

"This happened multiple times with multiple selections. Every time my choice flipped from Republican to Democrat. Sometimes it required four or five tries to get the 'x' to stay on my real selection," the Frederick, Md., resident said last week.

Queen Anne County Sheriff Gary Hofmann said he encountered the problem, too, personally.

"This is happening here as well. It occurred on two candidates on my machine. I am glad I checked. Many voters have reported this here as well," Hofmann, a Republican, wrote in an email Sunday evening.

Two other Maryland voters reported the same in Anne Arundel County on Friday.

A similar vote switch turned up in Chicago earlier last week.

Illinois Republican state representative candidate Jim Moynihan went to the Schaumburg Public Library last Monday to vote for himself. "Instead, it cast the vote for my opponent," Moynihan told Watchdog.org.

"You could imagine my surprise as the same thing happened with a number of races when I tried to vote for a Republican and the machine registered a vote for a Democrat," Moynihan said.

He notified the election judge at his polling place and demonstrated that it continued to cast a vote for the opposing candidate's party. Moynihan was eventually allowed to vote for Republican candidates, including his own race.

Back in Maryland, two voters in Anne Arundel County experienced the same problem: A Diebold touchscreen voting machine switched their Republican votes to Democrats. The voters had to cancel their votes and start over.

Joe Torre, election director in Anne Arundel, called it a "calibration issue" involving a single machine.

Hamilton said she notified officials of the problem she encountered at the Frederick County Center, where she voted. "I'm not sure what was done about it. If someone is not paying close attention, they could end up voting for the wrong candidate," she said.
