Study Finds Even Wealthy Women Worry About
Becoming 'The Best Dressed Bag Lady in Their Community'

Nearly half of all American women, no matter their background, share a fear that may seem odd given the wealth of some: They are afraid of losing their financial independence, otherwise known as "Bag Lady Syndrome," according to a 2013 study.

Of those who harbor BLS anxiety, 60 percent were the primary breadwinners for their households, according to the Allianz poll of 2,200 women ages 25 to 75.

"Financially, women's needs are different from those of men, and the financial industry isn't meeting them," says Lance Drucker, CEO and president of the New York City-based Drucker Wealth Management, (www.DruckerWealth.com).

"Women typically live longer than men, so they need more retirement savings.  Further compounding the problem is the fact that, in many cases, women are paid less for the same job as men. Finally, many have fewer earning years because they dropped out of the labor force for a time to have and raise their children."

Drucker, author of "How to Avoid Bag Lady Syndrome (BLS): A Strong Woman's Guide to Financial Peace of Mind," offers seven action steps that women can do to address their financial insecurity:

•  Identify your pain as well as your goals. Answer the following questions: What keeps me up at night?  What worries me most about my money & my future? What do I want to do with the rest of my life? When can I afford to retire? Can I afford to stay retired? Can I travel, change careers, or go back to school?

•  Create a budget that includes fixed and variable monthly costs as well as one-time expenses. Based on your budget, start building a cash cushion that will cover six to nine months of fixed expenses. The ultimate goal of retirement planning is to create an income stream that is sustainable and will support your retirement needs.

•  Create a balance sheet of savings and investments. This includes your savings account, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, investment real estate, cash value life insurance, annuities, retirement accounts, individual retirement accounts, 401 (k) plans and other assets.  Then further break it down by pre-tax and post tax-accounts.

•  Review insurance coverage and needs. Are you supporting anyone else? Is there a need for Life Insurance?  Who will take care of you if you get sick?  Do you have Long Term Care Insurance? One mother can raise 10 kids, but 10 kids can't take care of one mother... Younger and healthier women may be tempted to overlook the importance of this step, but failure to anticipate potential health issues can be very expensive.

•  Address your estate-planning needs. Do you have a will, a durable power of attorney or a health care proxy?  Have you updated your beneficiary designations on your retirement accounts?  Does it make sense to put your assets in a trust to avoid probate? Answers for these questions are important.

•  Develop your investment strategy. Is there a purpose to your current investment approach, or are you just accumulating funds? We recommend something we call a "4 Bucket Approach to Purposeful Investing" that has been designed with the help of a Wharton Business School professor.

•  Hire a Coach. Studies have shown that those investors that utilize a high quality financial advisor feel more confident, optimistic, and significantly more likely to stick to their plan versus do-it-yourself investors.

Special tax-free gift option for 2014

For those over age 70½, it is once again possible to make tax-favored charitable gifts from traditional and Roth IRA accounts.

On December 19th, legislation was signed into law that extends this special opportunity for gifts completed in 2014. Amounts given in this way will count toward 2014 required IRA withdrawal amounts.

A total of up to $100,000 can be transferred directly from traditional or Roth IRAs to the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend free of federal income tax. There may also be state income tax savings.

To make such gifts, it is important to not withdraw funds prior to a gift, but distribute them directly from an IRA to one or more qualified charities. For those with check writing privileges on their accounts, this may be the most efficient way to make gifts directly from an IRA.

Check with us, your IRA administrator or your advisors for more information. You can also visit our Planned Giving site for more information.

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today visited more than 100 sailors who could not go home at this year's "Christmas Day with the Sailors" event in Berwyn. The event is supported by local charities and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and features lunch, dinner, music and a visit from Santa. Governor Quinn was joined by Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero for a traditional holiday meal and to present awards to those who make the event possible.

The Governor released the following statement:

"Today people across Illinois will gather with loved ones to celebrate Christmas and the spirit of family, generosity and goodwill towards all.

"Christmas is a time of joy, charity and compassion. While we celebrate the season, we should reflect on and cherish the many gifts that we have been blessed with, including the brave men and women who sacrifice so much for our nation. These men and women give up time with their friends and families so that we might celebrate safely with ours. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for their unmatched generosity and selflessness.

"Merry Christmas!"

SPRINGFIELD, IL (12/24/2014)(readMedia)-- The Warrior 2 Warrior (W2W) program is the Illinois Army National Guard's (ILARNG) only direct, peer-based, support program for Soldiers who do not qualify for traditional veteran benefits because they have not deployed.

Born from the 'Buddy 2 Buddy' program founded in Michigan, the Illinois W2W program evolved from its foster foundation. The Illinois National Guard program supports the servicemembers and families. The program works in direct partnership with the ILARNG, the McCormick Foundation and the Health and Disability Advocates.

"If you are genuinely struggling, I would definitely refer you to the Warrior 2 Warrior program," said Pfc. Reggie Shepherd of Berwyn, Illinois, with Headquarters and Headquarters Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery in Chicago. "They have been and continue to be a big part of how I was able to get a job, find housing and support myself."

Shepherd learned about the program after a volunteer veteran visited his unit. The volunteer explained what the W2W program is, how it works and how Soldiers can seek help.

"When the volunteer veteran came to my drill weekend, it couldn't have been at a better time as I was coming up on being homeless," said Shepherd.

Whitney Shefte, a Peabody award-winning broadcaster took interest in the efforts of the W2W program in October. She highlighted the program in a short documentary in the Washington Post in November. The documentary can view it at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/storyline/wp/2014/11/11/struggling-to-survive-wars-trauma-by-helping-other-soldiers-to-do-the-same/ .

"The W2W program was able to provide me with a wealth of resources that lead me to my current employment, both my volunteer veteran and the veteran staff of Health and Disability Advocates (HAD) supported me throughout my entire job search," said Shepherd.

The HAD, ILARNG W2W program and the servicemember support branch asserts the program and has historically served hundreds of service and family members of the Illinois National Guard community and continues to provide an outlet of connection for Illinois veterans seeking to help those who serve.

"They really took the time to help me share my struggles and find a path towards employment," said Shepherd. "They helped me to develop a resume and let me use the computer lab resources and phone lines to network and set up interviews. They even connected me to other resources which ultimately enabled me to receive financial support."

Governor Makes Christmas Eve Donation to Program That Helps Injured Servicemembers Connect with Family

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today urged people across Illinois to support Operation Hero Miles, a program that helps injured servicemembers connect with their families. The Governor today donated 4,000 frequent flyer miles to Operation Hero Miles and highlighted the program's positive impact on the lives of military families. Today's Christmas Eve announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to honor, protect and support the men and women who have served our nation.

"Nothing should keep injured servicemembers and their families apart during this very special time of year," Governor Quinn said. "Christmas is a time of gratitude and Operation Hero Miles gives us a great opportunity to thank our military members and their families who have sacrificed so much."

Operation Hero Miles uses donated frequent flyer miles to provide free round-trip airline tickets to military families flying to visit a servicemember receiving medical treatment. It also enables wounded or ill servicemembers with approved leave to fly home at no cost. Supported by nearly every major airline, the program has issued more than 40,000 donated tickets to date, saving servicemembers and their families nearly $63 million. To donate miles, visit FisherHouse.org.

The Governor recently returned from a trip to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he delivered holiday cards made by Illinois schoolchildren to wounded servicemembers, doctors and staff. This year marked the 10th time that Governor Quinn has visited Illinois troops and their families for Christmas.

For more information on these and other initiatives to help our veterans, please visit OperationHomefront.org.
