Check presentation held at Foodbank

Davenport, IA– On August 15th, the Kiwanis Club of Davenport presented River Bend Foodbank with a check for $4,000. This money will sponsor the children on the Backpack Program at Madison Elementary School in Davenport for the 2014-2015 school year.

Caren Laughlin, River Bend Foodbank Marketing Director and Backpack Program Coordinator, said, "This is an incredible donation and insures that these children at Madison Elementary School will not go hungry on the weekends throughout the school year."

The Backpack Program provides children at risk of hunger with nourishing food to take home on Fridays to get them through the weekend when programs like school breakfasts and lunches are not available.  The Backpack Program targets pre-school, elementary and middle school children who are at risk of chronic hunger.  These children are identified by name by their school staff.  Each child receives a weekly food pack on Fridays to put in their Backpacks and take home for the weekend.  The food is child friendly, easily consumed and vitamin fortified. The bags contain about eight items and include two "entrees" like stew or soup, two servings of fruit, cereal, milk, and juice. We partner with the schools to select the children and distribute the food. Currently we are serving 43 schools and 1,700 of the neediest children in the Quad Cities.

Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

Hall knows firsthand Braley's strong commitment to delivering results for veterans

DES MOINES, IA - Today in Ankeny, Army veteran Tom Hall discussed Bruce Braley's strong record of delivering results for Iowa's veterans. Hall is an Army Ranger veteran, and spoke from personal experience. While he was finishing military school, Hall was denied housing assistance. He reached out to Braley, and Braley delivered results for Hall and the other members of his unit.

Hall said, "Bruce Braley's record for Iowa's veterans and military members is a record of results. He has always stood with us, and i believe that veterans as a whole are better off because of Bruce Braley."

Braley's record for Iowa's veterans and military families is one of results. He led a successful effort to secure back-pay and GI Bill benefits for Iowa National Guard members, he introduced and helped pass tax cuts for businesses who hire veterans and worked across the aisle to pass the Andrew Connolly Veterans Housing Act, helping injured and disabled veterans retrofit their homes. Braley has also introduced legislation to incentivize more doctors and nurses to work at the VA to help provide the quality care veterans deserve.

During the War of 1812, the battle of Credit Island took place on Sept. 4 and 5, 1814. Join us on August 30, 2014 from 8am - 2pm at Credit Island, 2200 W. River Drive in Davenport for a commemoration for the 200th anniversary of this historic battle.

Hunger and poverty are problems that impact communities around the world. Locally, here in the Quad Cities, we know the struggle. We see it around us, and know the work of the community to end it. Nationally and globally, hunger and poverty are also a problem. Every night, 1 in 7 people in the world go to bed hungry. In the United States, more than 17 million households, or 14.5 percent of Americans don't know where their next meal may come from.1

In October, the community is coming together to end hunger both locally and globally. Starting with churches in the community, and including local businesses, schools, and the entire community, the 43rd annual Quad Cities CROP Hunger Walk has been planned for Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m. Our walk, which is the only bi-state CROP Hunger Walk in the nation, will raise funds to go toward hunger alleviation efforts both in the Quad Cities and through the work of Church World Service around the world. The 600 or so walkers also raise awareness of the struggle families dealing with hunger and poverty face on a daily basis.

"Here in our area, 25 percent of funds raised will go to local hunger programs which make a real impact for families dealing with hunger and poverty in our community. These funds really do make a difference in peoples lives in our community," said Rick Martin, coordinator of the Quad Cities CROP Hunger walk.

"The money and awareness raised by the more than 70 CROP Hunger Walks across Iowa make a huge difference in the lives of people around the world," said Jordan Bles, Church World Service Assistant Field Director for the Iowa Region. "$110 raised is the equivilant of an emergency food package - locally purchased and culturally appropriate enough for a family of five for one month. $300 equals 10 meters of a shallow borehole well for a community desperate for clean, safe water and sustainable food security."

Everyone is invited to participate, and play a part in ending hunger both in the Quad Cities area and around the world. For more information, please contact Rick Martin (qccrophungerwalk@gmail.com).

Coal Valley, IL - August 15, 2014 - Niabi Zoo announced today the opening of a new rainforest-themed animal exhibit in its Jungle Trek Discovery Center. The new exhibit is mixed-species and houses a Linne's Two-Toed Sloth and a pair of Cotton-Top Tamarins.

The new exhibit cost approximately $93,000 to build and was funded through grants from the Scott County Regional Authority, the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, and funds raised by the Niabi Zoological Society. The exhibit was built by Estes Construction of Davenport, IA. The exhibit is located indoors and features an abundance of natural light provided through expansive windows, live plants, natural soil substrate, rocks, and only a thin wire mesh separating the animals from zoo visitors.

Zoo Director Marc Heinzman says this exhibit is a positive addition to Niabi Zoo. "This new rainforest exhibit is a beautiful and engaging habitat for some truly amazing animals," said Heinzman, "and I think it will be a great addition to our Jungle Trek Discovery Center." Heinzman also said that the goal of the new exhibit is to encourage zoo visitors to learn about the importance of the rainforest and why it should be protected.

Cotton-Top Tamarins (Sanguinus oedipus) are one of the smallest species of primates in the world, with adults weighing less than 1.1 pounds. In the wild, these monkeys are found in the rainforests of northwest Columbia and are listed as a critically endangered species due to habitat loss. Linne's Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus), one of the slowest animals on the planet, is native to the rainforests of several South American countries including Columbia, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela and Equador.

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– On Monday, September 1 a park ranger leads visitors through the reconstructed 81-acre tallgrass prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. The walk is less than a mile and lasts about 60 minutes. Bring water, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent are also recommended.

TSO "THE CHRISTMAS ATTIC" PRESENTED BY HALLMARK CHANNEL PLAYING ARENAS NATIONWIDE KICKING OFF NOVEMBER 13TH
Los Angeles, CA - August 15, 2014 - Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) will wrap up 2014 by performing their rock opera The Christmas Attic live for the first time in arenas across the nation on their Winter Tour 2014, beginning on November 13th. While 1998's The Christmas Attic features one of the band's most popular songs "Christmas Canon," surprisingly, it is the only album of The Christmas Trilogy never to be performed live. The 2014 Winter Tour will find TSO playing more than 120 shows in 71 cities across North America. The tour goes on sale on September 12th (see www.trans-siberian.com for details) and will be presented by Hallmark Channel.
TSO creator, lyricist and composer Paul O'Neill explains, "After kicking off the New Year in front of two million fans at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, followed by our second European tour, the band felt that a perfect way to end the year would be to perform the only rock opera from the trilogy that has never been seen live. Some of the songs off The Christmas Attic have never been played live. As I have always said 'it is fun to write the songs, it is fun to record them, but they are never really completed until we perform them in front of a live arena audience.' Of course the second half of the show will feature, TSO iconic classics and fan favorites, such as 'Wizards In Winter,' 'Requiem' and 'Christmas Eve/ Sarajevo 12/24'."
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's rock opera, The Christmas Attic will be re-released, to coincide with the tour, complete with bonus tracks, as well as a special vinyl edition. Called an "...inspiring story..." by USA Today and "Majestic, sweeping..." by Billboard magazine. The album's (and stage production's) narrative begins on Christmas Eve, when a young girl's curiosity leads her to a night of mischief and magic.  She decides to sneak up into the attic of her parents' home while she should be asleep and there discovers a magical doorway to the past in the form of a mysterious trunk filled with ornaments, toys, old records and bundles of handwritten letters. A startling discovery in one of the letters, leads to an unlikely adventure.
TSO, which celebrated its 15th year of live shows last year, has consistently ranked in the Top 10 for yearly gross revenues and attendance, according to touring industry trade Pollstar. The group has played more than 1,600 shows for more than 11 million fans, and in the process, cemented itself as one of the world's biggest arena rock acts. This ongoing success is due to TSO founder Paul O'Neill's vision. O'Neill has melded the sound and fury of rock with the storytelling of Broadway to create a unique amalgamation he calls "rock theater" that leaves crowds of all ages speechless. Additionally, TSO's live performances receive raves from critics, such as: "As the enthralled audience members filed out of the arena, more than one person was overheard saying something to the effect of 'It gets better every year'," "This current tour demonstrates once again the incredible showmanship of Trans-Siberian Orchestra," and "The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is evidence that the genres of rock opera, progressive rock and symphonic rock have not died, and that they actually are thriving... What's cool about it is that the people of all ages and all walks of life can enjoy it."
As in all previous years, a portion of all ticket sales will go to benefit select local charities.  The consistent growth of TSO's touring popularity has increased the group's contributions and, to date, TSO has donated more than $11 million to local charities.
While off the road, TSO is constantly stockpiling new projects in their arsenal, including the rock operas Gutter Ballet and the New York City Blues Express, Letters from the Labyrinth, and Romanov: When Kings Must Whisper, an epic story set amidst the Bolshevik Revolution.
TSO will unveil exciting information on new music in the next few months. Stay tuned to http://www.trans-siberian.com/ for more details.
