ROCKFORD, IL (11/04/2013)(readMedia)-- Veteran's Day means something different to everyone. For some, it is a time to grieve for what has been lost. For others, it is celebrated for the freedoms fought for and gained.

For Illinois Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Lawrence Orsborn Jr., it is a moment for reflection and pride.

"Twice a year, on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, families and friends meet at the LZ (Landing Zone) Peace Memorial located at Midway Village in Rockford, Illinois," said Orsborn, a recruiting and retention noncomissioned officer with Company D, Recruit Sustainment Battalion in Aurora, Ill. "The event is held to pay honor and tribute to the veterans, both living and on the wall of the memorial. They are Vietnam veterans from Winnebago County."

Orsborn said both are solemn days to remember and honor those who came before and served their country.

"It's not about the sales we see on TV...it's about the men and women of the past who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their beliefs," said Orsborn, a Rockford, Ill., native. "It allows peace for the families of those who were lost, and a way to honor who those men and women were. To not forget their memory, to hold that piece of history close to your heart."

Orsborn's father served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, from 1967 to 1969. His example ultimately influenced his son to join.

"My father's influence is everything I try to hold dearly each day," said Orsborn. "To teach new recruits to be proud of our flag, and the rights of freedom for all those oppressed, no matter where that takes you or what you may face."

Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Stephen Cooper, the Joint Force Headquarters' command staff chaplain, usually does the benediction and closing prayers for these events. He said the day is full of meaning for all veterans and must be remembered.

"We stand on the very tall shoulders of the Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors who went before us," said Cooper, also a Rockford native. "We must never forget our heritage and the blood, sweat and tears that were shed building that heritage. For Vietnam veterans this is perhaps even more the case since, for the most part, they did not receive their due recognition and honor when they came home."

Cooper also said this day holds a special significance for Orsborn.

"These events are extremely significant for Staff Sgt. Orsborn," he said. "Not only is he a combat vet himself, but his father's name is on the LZ Peace Memorial wall as a fallen Vietnam veteran."

Orsborn agreed the day means much to him.

"On those hallowed days, I get to stand and read the fifth panel of names," said Orsborn. "I stutter, I cry...I am proud to read the name, Lawrence Edward Orsborn Sr., my own name, my namesake, my father and my best friend. It hurts each and every time. Family and veterans are always encouraged to speak. The voices heard echo in the wind and our hearts."

This year marks the 50th anniversary since the Vietnam War. Cooper emphasized the importance of events such as these, as they have a direct impact on those serving today.

"Anecdotally, this very group of Vietnam vets was key in my 'recovery' from my time in Iraq," he said. "I grew up with Vietnam vets as my heroes. To have them look at me, a fellow combat vet, in the eye and consider me a brother was incomprehensibly momentous to me."

Orsborn echoed this sentiment.

"The importance of the Vietnam war is vast," Cooper said. "From a historical perspective, it opened up the racial balances of our own country. Men volunteered and were drafted. Women saw the grimaces of combat as nurses, saving lives both physically and mentally. Back home our nation was at war over serving or not. The younger generation needs to understand what choices can do to our country."

As the years go by, Orsborn said he will continue to participate in events like these and honor the

memory of all veterans.

"It is very humbling to speak of these brave men; to speak of the passion I have for the memory of my father," Orsborn said. "I can honestly say that my heart yearns to talk to him again, to show him the man I have become and the children I have raised, to show him the Soldiers I have enlisted and the passion I display to them about service to this great nation."

Orsborn said his father is and will continue to be his role model in both his military career and life.

"The main inspiration I have is my dad's shell casing from his funeral," he said. I carry that every day with me, everywhere I go, no matter my clothing. It is with me, as is my dad, eternally."

MOLINE, Ill. (November 2, 2013) - Andrew Fournier scored a pair of third period goals- including the game winner- as the Brampton Beast edged the host Quad City Mallards 4-3 Saturday night.

Fournier gave the Beast its fourth lead of the night and third of the third period from the doorstep at 12:58 of the final frame.  Fournier delivered the decider just a minute and 12 seconds after Gergo Nagy's close range power play goal had evened the score at three.  Brampton's Brett Smith had provided a similarly quick response from the left wing circle at the 5:43 mark of the third after the Mallards' Corbin Baldwin had knotted the contest at two at 4:20.  Fournier's goals bookended the third period- he gave the Beast a 2-1 lead by finishing off a 2-on-1 rush just 67 seconds into the period.

The Beast had first moved in front when Michael MacIsaac tipped in a power play opener at 10:38 of the first period.  After missing the net from the high slot, Jeff Lee pounced on the carom from the end boards and backhanded the first Mallard goal in under the cross bar from the bottom of the right wing circle at 6:14 of the second period.

Quad City fell despite outshooting the Beast 32-26 on the night and 17-6 in a third period that saw Brampton goaltender Krisofer Westblom make 15 saves.

The Mallards return to action next Friday night at 7:05 p.m. on home ice against the Denver Cutthroats.  That game is a $1 Dog/$1 Beer Friday presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and $1 beers will be available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season, but the Mallards never would take the lead.

Tickets for next Friday night's tilt and all other Mallards regular season home games can be purchased at the iWireless Center ticket office, Ticketmaster outlets, through ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.  The ticket office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.

What started out as a bit of a lark for fishing and hunting friends, has blossomed into a cottage industry for author Tim Murphy. On the one-year anniversary of his first book, "Flannel John's Hunting & Fishing Camp Cookbook," Murphy has released his eighth title in his "Cookbooks for Guys" series called "Flannel John's Hearty Bowl Cookbook - Soup, Stew, Chili & Chowder" (7.95). This book features over 100 pages of warm bowls of comfort food.

"I wrote the first 'cookbook for guys' for friends. They would show up at deer camp or the fishing cabin with beef jerky, a block of cheese and a case of beer. Aside from the olfactory assault and possible heart-stopping properties, the camp needed food with more substance. They needed dishes that were easy and quick to make from breakfast and lunch, to dinner, snacks and sides. Now "Flannel John's Hearty Bowl Cookbook" continues the simplicity for this year's deer camp. Guys can make tasty, filling, basic meals with a pot and a ladle."

Two other books were released this past fall in the series, "Flannel John's Tailgating Grub & Couch Potato Cookbook" ($9.95) and "Flannel John's Single Guy Cookbook" ($7.95).

"The Tailgating book is for football fanatics. It's great food for the stadium parking lot or man-cave recliner. 'The Single Guy Cookbook' is aimed at recent grads, single dads or guys kicked out of their parents' basement. Every recipe in that book is six ingredients or less," said Murphy.

And who is Flannel John?

"Flannel John is a character based on a few old hunters I knew from Michigan's upper peninsula. I wanted to honor their spirit and what they taught me. He is essentially part Babe Winkelman, Ted Nugent, Red Green, Grizzly Adams and crusty mountain man. They were the inspiration for these books. I've written seven Flannel John books with another dozen planned. The next book, "Flannel John's Winter Cabin Cookbook" will be out in November.

The first book, Flannel John's Hunting & Fishing Camp Cookbook, cracked Amazon.com's "Top 1%" Sales" category within a month of release.

Subsequent releases included Flannel John's Woods and Water Cookbook - Critters, Fritters, Chili and Beer in February 2013, Flannel John's Pirate Galley Cookbook - Coastal Cuisine and Maritime Meals from Oceans, Lakes and Rivers in April 2013 and for the backwoods, rustic soul there was Flannel John's Mountain Man Cookbook - Frontier Food from the Hills, Country and Backwoods in May 2013.

Murphy also released his first "non-Flannel John title this summer called "The Tube Steak Boogie Cookbook - A Celebration of Hot Dogs, Sausage, Brats & Kielbasa."

"That book was a tribute to the hot dog stand of my youth, and adulthood, in the south suburbs of Chicago called Willie's Wee Nee Wagon," said Murphy.

Why cookbooks for guys?

"I didn't see anything written for men, especially beginner and novice cooks," said Murphy. "The first book covered basic comfort food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, deserts and drinks. It was aimed at hunters and anglers but it's great for campers and RVers. After the first title, I kept discovery new themes and new recipes. So now we have books for seafood, fish, pioneer recipes and a lot more. I have a dozen new titles slated to rollout over the next two years including the first non-food title. That's going to be "Flannel John's Outhouse Reader and Emergency T.P. Book."

Tim Murphy is a graduate of Western Michigan University. This 23-year radio veteran spent

17-years hosting morning radio shows in Laramie, WY, Stevens Point, WI and several Michigan cities including Holland (92.7 The Van), Muskegon (Z108), Traverse City (Double Rock KLT), Saginaw (WIOG-FM) and Houghton (The Wolf). Murphy has had a long career as a freelance and comedy writer. His work has appeared in dozens of outlets including Backwoods Home Magazine, The Porcupine Press U.P. Magazine, National Lampoon, The Traverse City Record Eagle and ABC Radio Network. He lives in Seaside, Oregon with his wife LisaMarie Costanzo and vacations at his cabin near Bergland, Michigan.

All eight books can be found at Amazon.com and at www.flanneljohn.com. They are $7.95 except for the Tailgating book, which is $9.95. For additional information on the books, to interview the author or to inquire about wholesale book pricing, contact Tim Murphy at (701) 238-1775 or at shamrockarrow@gmail.com or like "Flannel John" on facebook.

Explore the Swedish Novel, British Writing Nov. 5 & 12

In October sessions of the 16th Annual Frieze Lecture Series at Rock Island Library, Augustana College professors considered the generational impacts on how people perceive their ethnic identity and shown how African cultures use ceremonial objects and textiles to reinforce social lessons, spiritual connections and status.

Two remaining lectures in November will explore global connections in literature. Presentations begin at 2:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street, and are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, visiting professor Dr. Benjamin
Mi  er-Cruz, of the Augustana College department of German and Scandinavian, will speak on the exploding popularity of the Swedish Crime Novel.
From works such as "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by the late Steig Larsson to the Wallander novels by Henning Mankell, what is behind the huge popularity of violent crime fiction in a relatively tranquil national culture? Novels by Camilla Läckberg, the Swedish author of "The Hidden Child" and "The Lost Boy" have been translated into 33 languages.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, Prof. Katie Hanson, Augustana Education Department, will speak on one of Britain's foremost authors, Japanese-born Kazuo Ishiguro. Hanson will consider how the author's background as somewhat of a cultural outsider influenced his perceptions of the Western world. Ishiguro has become one of the most celebrated contemporary fiction authors in the English-speaking world, receiving four Mann Booker writing prize nominations, and winning the 1989 award for his novel, The Remains of the Day. His 2005 novel, Never Let Me Go was the common summer reader for this year's entering class. Find out why!

This year's theme,  "It IS a Small World After All: Globalism's Impact on Literature, Art and Culture" was chosen to illustrate the global connections between the humanities.

MOLINE, Ill. (November 1, 2013) - The host Quad City Mallards scored four power play goals- three of them while up 5-on-3 - and got 27 saves from Thomas Heemskirk on the way to a 6-1 defeat of the St. Charles Chill Friday evening.

The Mallards pulled away will three third period man advantage goals.  Quad City was already on top 3-1 before Mike Hellyer buried a rebound at 11:50 of the third.  The Mallards produced a further pair of rapid-fire goals after a series of late St. Charles penalties provided Quad City with an extended two-man advantage.  Mike Monfredo one-timed the fifth Mallard goal home with just 51 seconds remaining.  A mere 25 seconds later Jeff Lee capped off the Mallard win from the doorstep.  Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel assisted on each of the Mallards' third period goals.

The Mallard' late flourish was built on momentum they had grabbed in the second period.  Quad City scored twice in just under two minutes in the second to stretch what had been a 1-0 lead to 3-0.  At 5:41 of the middle frame, the Mallards were up 5-on-3 when Gergo Nagy's drive from the high slot doubled the gap.  Vladimir Nikiforov- who also had an assist- extended the margin to three goals from point-blank range at 7:38.  Chad Costello's power play one timer got the Chill on the scoreboard for the first time at the 9:52 mark, but St. Charles would get no closer.

The Mallards never looked back after Nicholas Rioux opened the scoring just four minutes and eight seconds into the game with a wrist shot from the slot.

The Mallards return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. on home ice against the Brampton Beast.  Fans who donate new, unwrapped toys at the iWireless Center tomorrow will receive a coupon good for $3 off the price of one ticket (for each toy donated) to tomorrow evening's game.  Donated toys will be distributed to area foster children by the Center for Youth and Family Solutions, which engages and serves children and families in need with dignity, compassion and respect by building upon individual and community strengths to resolve life challenges together.

How you vote is a personal decision, but after careful consideration, the Quad City Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, has endorsed these candidates because we feel the best represent the interests of working people in Scott County.

Where more than 70% of voters turned out for the Presidential Election, sometimes as few as 10-20% turnout for City Elections. We feel strongly at Quad City Federation of Labor that people should exercise their right to vote in every election, and that it is at the local election where our vote and our voices can be stronger.

City officials determine when and where economic development occurs, and whether it will be awarded to companies that pay a fair wage to their workers. City officials also decide what sidewalk, sewer, and road repairs to prioritize, and what will be the working conditions for city workers. Therefore, it is incumbent upon Scott County residents to get involved so they may have a voice in those important local decisions. Your vote is your voice - please get out to vote on November 5th.
