Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa has been looking into how hospitals are using a discount prescription drug program, known as 340B.  Certain hospitals appear to be making sizeable profits from the program at the expense of Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurance.  An in-depth report from Kaiser Health News this month explored financial bonuses given to the leaders of several non-profit hospital systems for reasons including expansion of hospital operations.  Grassley staff research found that each system except for one discussed in the articles has at least one 340B-eligible hospital.  One of the medical systems in the Kaiser Health News coverage, Carolinas HealthCare System, was among three North Carolina hospital systems Grassley looked at as part of his interest in the 340B program.  Grassley made the following comment on 340B eligibility and hospital executive bonuses.

"Hospitals eligible for the 340B program are supposed to have a high indigent patient population.  If some 340B-eligible hospitals have significant money available for executive bonuses, that raises questions about how they allocate their resources.  Are they doing everything possible to help uninsured patients receive health care, including affordable prescription drugs?  I intend to continue looking into how hospitals are using the 340B program and how their uses affect other programs in the health care system."

The Quad City Wolfpack semipro football team is reaching out to the less fortunate by serving at King's
Harvest Ministries on Friday, June 21, 2013. This is their 2nd season playing semipro football in the Quad
Cities and they want to help the community.

The whole football team will be serving hot meals in their football jerseys at the King's Harvest Soup
Kitchen on Friday, June 21, 2013 at noon. King's Harvest serves the poor and less fortunate in the Quad
Cities by providing hot meals, shelter, clothing and free groceries. King's Harvest is located at 824 West
3rd Street in downtown Davenport.

Matt McClean, owner and General Manager for the Wolfpacks, said "The whole team lives in the Quad
Cities and we think it's important to help those in need in our community". King's Harvest will be the
charity of choice for the Wolfpack's 2012 season. A portion of ticket sales will go to King's Harvest.

This year, Red, White & Boom will feature a fireworks display that is choreographed to a music soundtrack. A computer controlled launching system will be used to pair specific types and colors of fireworks to be fired during the musical broadcast. Events for Red White and Boom will open at 6 p.m. in LeClaire Park in Davenport and Schwiebert Park in Rock Island. Both riverfronts will have live music, thank you notes for our troops, food, beer gardens, and of course, the largest fireworks display on the Mississippi River beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Both Davenport and Rock Island will have ceremonies with a proclamation read by the Quad Cities mayors highlighting the Rock Island Arsenal and those who are serving ,or have served, in our nations military.

The Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce also presents " Hooah! Quad Cities," a military appreciation and community goodwill campaign. The "Hooah! There will be an opening reception in the gallery celebrating the accomplishments of these teachers from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 20 in the exhibition, with remarks at 7:00 pm.

The variety of artworks included in the exhibition range in material, technique and style, and show how impactful teachers as practicing artists can be. Through the process of art-making, the teachers become even greater role models for students as they demonstrate, first-hand, the power of imagination and creativity.

Stefanie Brown will resume day-to-day management of the River Bandits and Modern Woodmen Park

DAVENPORT, Iowa (JUNE 18, 2013) - The Quad Cities River Bandits announced on Tuesday that Executive Director of Modern Woodmen Park Stefanie Brown is resuming day-to-day operation of the Midwest League club, as former General Manager Harold Craw is leaving to pursue other opportunities outside the organization.

DAVENPORT, Iowa - June 18, 2013 - Genesis will offer three CarFit events this summer for older drivers.

CarFit is a national educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to evaluate how well their personal vehicles "fit" them.  Health professionals work with older drivers and review 12 key areas to ensure
they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum safety.  A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

The three Genesis CarFit events coming up are scheduled for:

Wednesday, July 10 - Event will be held from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport.

Thursday, August 8 - Event will be held from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus.

Saturday, September 14 - Event will be held from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport.

Older drivers are often the safest drivers because they're more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drink and drive, statistics show.  However, they are also more likely to be seriously injured in a crash because their bodies are more fragile.

"Older drivers can improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them," said Gretchen Cluff, an Occupational Therapist at Genesis and a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist.  "A proper fit in their car can greatly increase not only the driver's safety but also the safety of others.

"Once seniors arrive for their check, they will asked basic information and then we will evaluate how they fit in their car. For example, are they sitting too close to the airbag?  Are their mirrors adjusted appropriately to maximize their view?  Is their seat in the best position to reach the brake and gas pedals?

"We can only make recommendations and can't touch or change anything for liability reasons.  We can, however, provide the senior drivers with important information that could increase their driving safety."

Three examples underscore the importance of road safety to the CarFit program:

• Knowing how to properly adjust one's mirrors can greatly minimize blind spots for drivers when changing lanes.

• Good foot positioning on the gas and brake pedals is important. Drivers who reach with their toes to press on the pedals can cause fatigue in their legs and slow reaction time.

• Drivers run a risk of serious injury if they are sitting closer than 10 inches from the steering wheel.

Other CarFit events have shown that more than one-third of seniors had at least one critical safety issue.  One in 10 sat too close to the steering wheel, and 20 percent did not have a line of sight at least 3 inches over the steering wheel.

Genesis offers the only hospital-based driver's evaluation program in eastern Iowa with a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist.

Interactive Fan Attraction to Introduce Tennis to Youth and Families across the Nation

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (June 18, 2013) - The United States Tennis Association (USTA) SmashZone Mobile Tour continues its 22-city tour run this weekend when it will be part of the Quad City Air Show in Davenport, Iowa on June 22 and 23.

SmashZone introduces youth tennis to kids and parents across the country and began as the premier fan interactive attraction at the US Open before being showcased across the country. Since its inception in 2011, SmashZone has attracted more than 2 million people to its tennis courts.

In addition to the SmashZone Mobile Tour, the Quad City Air Show is hosting the biggest World War II - theme salute air show ever. The show, which is one of the longest-running air shows in the industry, is moving back to June after being held over Labor Day weekend in 2012 to accommodate the schedule of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

SmashZone is a way to showcase tennis in a fun and interactive way by making stops at fairs, festivals, air shows, retail environments and city centers. At SmashZone, children have the opportunity to play tennis games in a fun, festive atmosphere that allows participants to get active playing tennis from the start.

"The SmashZone Mobile Tour is a great platform to bring tennis to the masses through an interactive experience," said Kurt Kamperman, USTA Chief Executive, Community Tennis. "It provides an opportunity for kids to try tennis for the first time, allowing them to experience the fun and excitement that comes with playing the game."

SmashZone Mobile includes a 53-foot trailer, which anchors four kid-sized tennis courts for youth play. Courts will feature games such as Xerox Rally Court, racquet drills and activities, as well as a Target Challenge. The trailer itself, which is handicap accessible, will feature activities for visitors that will include a Tennis Magazine Green Screen Cover Shoot, Wii Tennis and Touch Screen Kiosks. SmashZone Mobile is a complement to the USTA's successful youth participation initiative, 10 and Under Tennis.

10 and Under Tennis is an ongoing effort to encourage young people to get active by playing tennis. The initiative uses modified equipment and courts tailored to a child's age and ability. By featuring shorter and lighter racquets, slower-bouncing balls, smaller courts and simplified scoring, children learn to play more quickly and easily while having more fun in the process.

Davenport, Iowa (June 17, 2013) -  Beginning Wednesday on the first floor of the Parker Building in downtown Davenport, Chicago-based artist Juan Angel Chavez will be constructing a web-like structure made from items collected in the Quad Cities and Chicago. The finished product will be on view for the upcoming Figge Art Museum exhibition No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service which opens June 29.

 

Pedestrians will be able to watch Chavez in action at the corner of Brady and Second Street as he constructs the sculpture daily through June 24.

 

Chavez works with salvaged wood and other discarded materials to create dynamic, sculptural assemblages that celebrate the intrinsic value of ordinary, and seemingly banal, objects. The tears, stains, abrasions and other imperfections that mark the surface of the material he collects provide a lasting record of an object's complex history.

 

For No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service the installation will take the form of a web-like structure reminiscent of the temporary shelters that animals (and humans) construct for their survival. In his use of refuse and other found objects, Chavez seeks to draw attention to socially deviant behavior and other "unwanted" activities.

Born in La Junta, Chihuahua, Mexico, Chavez immigrated to the United States when he was thirteen. He attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Early College Program and continued his studies at The School, where he currently holds a faculty position in the sculpture department. He has exhibited in Chicago at the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Mexican Fine Art Center Museum, and the Hyde Park Art Center. Chavez has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation award, the Louis Comfort Tiffany award, Artadia Individual artist award and 3Arts award.
