Restore the Votes Awareness Campaign Continues

(Des Moines, IA)– The NAACP and the NAACP Iowa State Conference are putting a face to their continuous efforts to restore the votes for people who were formerly convicted of felonies.  The organizations unveiled a billboard on Highway 69, just south of the Capitol and state offices, to raise awareness of the issue. The billboard image portrays individuals whose rights have been negatively impacted by voter disenfranchisement.
The state conference has been a steady advocate for expanding reentry services and restoring the votes of people with former felony convictions who have completed all the terms of their sentences. The Iowa billboard launch will expound on national efforts across Florida, Virginia, Kentucky, Delaware, and Iowa to restore the votes.
"While Governor Branstad is joining a group of state governors and state legislatures across Virginia, Delaware, and Kentucky who are taking steps to restore the votes for citizens who have paid their debts to society, it is important for the state conference, local NAACP branches, NAACP and other leading organizations to bring awareness to the issue, continue the conversation and push for more permanent solutions like automatic restoration of rights," said Arnold Woods, President of the NAACP Iowa and Nebraska State Conference.
In December, Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds released an updated application designed  to make it easier for returning citizens to restore their voting rights: a streamlined application, clarifying instructions, simplifying the application process, and removing requirements such as credit history checks.
The NAACP hopes that the billboard also serves as a reminder for people formerly convicted of felonies to continue to seek restoration of rights under the new application process.
"The faces on the billboard represent millions of citizens whose voices are silenced because of past felony convictions," said Jotaka Eaddy, NAACP Senior Director for Voting Rights. "These are parents, taxpayers, students, employees, and in some cases employers who are expected to reintegrate and function normally in a society where they cannot cast a vote."
On the NAACP's billboard, the faces of Kemba Smith Pradia, Desmond Meade, and Jessica Chiaponne provide the backdrop for the tagline "They made mistakes. They did their time. They deserve to vote." On October 5, 2012 the Commonwealth of Virginia reinstated Kemba Smith Pradia's right to vote. President Bill Clinton gave Smith Pradia executive clemency in 2000. Desmond Meade and Jessicia Chiaponne, President and Vice President of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, have still been unable to restore their votes.
The NAACP Restore the Votes Campaign aims to restore the right to vote for millions of citizens formerly convicted of felonies.  The campaign was launched in October following the NAACP's delegation at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.  As part of the visit, the delegation held a panel discussion on felony disenfranchisement and the attack on voting rights in states across the nation.

(St. Louis, MO.)  --Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is right to bring up the effect that a sequester would have on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and air traffic safety in this country.  But the untold story is more serious because cuts to transit, bus and train service will first impact low income people on their way to work.

Indeed, low-income people will be hurt by cuts to human services programs like Medicaid, but cuts to Amtrak, the New Starts  program, which funds public transit projects and TIGER --the groundbreaking program that funds important sustainable transportation initiatives --will hurt working people, forcing many to skip work, pay for taxis out of limited budgets or lose their jobs altogether because of absenteeism or tardiness.

In addition, nearly $1 billion of the $8 billion added to the highway trust fund in 2013 will be cut - impacting job-creating highway programs.  When we look ahead to 2014, these bone-chilling cuts will be extended to all transit programs as well as highway programs.

These cuts promise to be draconian in nature and will hurt working families and the middle class first.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Davenport man scratched a "Crossword" ticket to unwind after work, but ended up feeling more excited than he had all day.

Matt Gilmore, 36, claimed the 29th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 in Crossword at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids on Friday.

"I just couldn't believe it," Gilmore said. "I was in shock."

Gilmore said he had trouble sleeping before claiming his prize. He called his mom to tell her the big news, but she had a hard time believing him.

"Not at first, anyway," Gilmore said.

Gilmore said news spread quickly at UPS in Davenport where he is a sorter and everyone is happy for him.

Gilmore hasn't yet made plans for how to spend his winnings. He purchased his winning ticket at Sub Xpress & Gas, 4307 W. Locust St. in Davenport.

Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.

Sixty-seven top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword, as well as 96 prizes of $3,000, more than 1,330 prizes of $300 and more than 6,400 prizes of $100.

Since the lottery's start in 1985, its players have won more than $3 billion in prizes while the lottery has raised more than $1.4 billion for the state programs that benefit all Iowans.

Today, lottery proceeds in Iowa have three main purposes: They provide support for veterans, help for a variety of significant projects through the state General Fund, and backing for the Vision Iowa program, which was implemented to create tourism destinations and community attractions in the state and build and repair schools.

MINNEAPOLIS - Doctors from BluePearl Veterinary Partners are urging people to stop using and return or discard certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food after the company issued a voluntary recall throughout the Midwest Friday.

According to a press release issued by Hy-Vee Inc., the company is recalling certain bags of Hy-Vee Complete Dog - Complete Nutrition, and Hy-Vee Complete Dog - Bites, Bones & Squares, after random routine testing performed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture found higher-than-normal levels of alflatoxin in some samples of the food.

The food was produced at a Kansas City plant operated by Pro-Pet LLC., according to the release.

Alflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxic chemical contaminant found commonly in corn and other foods that has been linked to liver damage.

Altogether, the products were distributed to customers located in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin between Oct. 26, 2012 and jan. 11, 2013.

By Congressman Dave Loebsack

Throughout the month of February, Iowans gathered for different events and celebrations across the state to honor and pay tribute to the many contributions African Americans have made to our great state and nation.  Iowa has always had a proud history of leading the way in advancing civil rights.

As we reflect on the long history of African Americans and their struggle for freedom and equality, we must also take the time to commemorate the great achievements of African Americans right here in Iowa.  From the Civil War to the 21st Century, some of our country's greatest African American leaders have called Iowa home.

As a graduate of Iowa State, I have long appreciated the story and achievements of George Washington Carver.  Born on a plantation in Missouri, Carver came to Iowa and became the first African American to enroll at what would later be known as Iowa State University.  Completing his bachelor's degree in 1894, he became the school's first African American faculty member.  After graduating with his master's, he joined Alabama's Tuskegee Institute, where his work resulted in hundreds of new products from peanuts and other crops.  Today, he is remembered for improving farming practices and being one of the first prominent African American scientists.

I'm proud to represent an area that is home to many great African American leaders.  Born in Ottumwa, Archie Alexander went on to study engineering at the University of Iowa.  He later became a renowned architect and designed a variety of projects around the country.   One of his most well-known endeavors was the design of airfield where the legendary Tuskegee airmen trained during the Second World War.

In 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt overruled his top generals and ordered the creation of an all African American flight training program.  These pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance, and support staff became known as the Tuskegee Airmen.  They served with distinction during World War II despite facing segregation both inside and outside the military.  A few years ago, I had the great honor of presenting the Tuskegee Airmen Bronze Medal to a constituent in the Second District in honor of his service during World War II as one of the first African American military pilots.

I am proud to be an Iowan and I hope that over the last month you have found a way to commemorate the great achievements of African Americans here in Iowa and across the United States.  Our state and our country have made great advances in equality and we must honor those who struggled so long against injustice and discrimination.  As we have done in the past, it is my hope that Iowa will move forward together and continue to fight for equality for all our people.

To view the Club for Growth's 2012 Congressional Scorecard and all prior Scorecards, click here, or go to: www.ClubForGrowth.org/Projects

"2012 was a difficult year for economic freedom," said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. "Whether it was the GOP's support of massive tax increases or the constant assault on liberty by the Obama administration, the pro-growth caucus in Congress has a lot of work to do in 2013. The Club's scorecard is intended to help our members and the general public understand who talks a good game on limiting government and passing pro-growth policies, and who backs up their words with votes. We urge the next generation of conservative leaders to keep up the fight in the 113th Congress."

This year, 28 current and former members of Congress will receive the Club for Growth's Defender of Economic Freedom Award. Starting in 2011, The Club for Growth required Representatives and Senators to not only score 90 or better on votes cast in a year, but to also have a lifetime score or "LifeScore" of at least 90.
