Online Constitution Day event totals more than $1 million

LAKE JACKSON, Texas - Over the weekend, 2012 Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul netted more than $1 million in yet another successful one day fundraising event.

The online fundraiser, consisted mostly of small individual donations, and marked the fifth time during the 2012 primary election cycle that Dr. Paul's campaign has passed the million-dollar mark for a single fundraising event.

"Our campaign continues to grow in strength and numbers, and the success of these truly grassroots events is a telling example of Dr. Paul's support," said Ron Paul 2012 Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

"Our rising poll numbers and successful fundraising demonstrate that Dr. Paul's strong message of Constitutionally-limited government, a traditionally Republican non-interventionist foreign policy and a return to sound money is clearly resonating with the American people."

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley said today that internships in his Washington, D.C., and Iowa offices are available for college-age Iowans.

Grassley said he encourages all young Iowans who are interested in learning more about government to apply.  The next internship session begins in January.  Applications should be submitted by October 15.

"Spending a semester working in a congressional office is a good way for college students and new graduates to learn more about the legislative branch of the federal government while gaining valuable work experience," Grassley said.  "Exposure to the work of a Senate office can enhance a college education and make students more competitive job applicants when they graduate.  These internships are available to students in all areas of study."

Full- and part-time internships are available for Iowans in Grassley's offices in Washington, D.C., Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City and Waterloo.  The next session of internships runs from January through May.  Interns assist staff members with administrative, legislative and communications work, including that of Grassley's staff on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, where he serves as Ranking Member.

This summer, Grassley interns in the Washington office produced a video describing their experience.  Click here to watch.

Application forms are available on Grassley's Senate website, in the placement offices of many Iowa colleges and universities, and in Grassley's offices in Iowa. Due to security-related delays in postal mail delivery to U.S. Senate office buildings, internship applications should be faxed to 202-224-5136 or emailed to intern_applications@grassley.senate.gov.  For more information, send messages to intern_applications@grassley.senate.gov or call 202-224-3744.

The fifth grade class at Rivermont Collegiate is discovering it's more fun to design and create a robot than it is to play with one - and having the hardest fun they've ever had!  Rivermont's fifth graders have formed 2 teams to participate in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics program!  Team Masterminds and Team Technical Difficulties are applying real-world math and science concepts to design, build, program, and test a fully autonomous robot capable of completing pre-assigned missions!  Teams will be competing at the FLL Regional Qualifier at the Putnam Museum on Saturday, December 10th.  Top performing teams at this local tournament will be invited to state and international tournaments.

FIRST LEGO League is a robotics program for children ages 9-16 designed to get children excited about science and technology, while teaching them valuable employment and life skills.  FIRST LEGO League 2011 features 19,800 teams from over 50 countries competing in 560 Qualifying Tournaments, which will be followed by 117 Championship Tournaments, 3 Open Championships, and 1 World Festival.  Teams, composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach, program an autonomous robot using the Lego Mindstorms set to score points on a thematic playing surface.  Teams also create an innovative solution to a problem, which is different every year and based on a real-world scientific topic.  This year's "problem" - also referred to as the Challenge - is titled "Food Factor - Keeping Food Safe" and challenges teams to identify points of contamination our food encounters and develop an innovative solution.

Rivermont fifth graders and their families and volunteer coaches have made a big commitment to this ambitious challenge, with scheduled weekly robotics practice and assignments, as well as a presentation to families in December before the regional competition at the Putnam.  In addition, the class is tracking lessons and progress, including photos and a blog, at www.RivermontRobotics.com - follow their exciting progress!

Soldiers from Riverton, Villa Park Among Those Observing Solemn Day in Afghanistan

KUNAR PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN (09/16/2011)(readMedia)-- Servicemembers at Camp Wright in Kunar Province spent a solemn day commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and celebrating the life of a fallen comrade Sept. 11.

Members of the Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), the Illinois National Guard's 1-14th Illinois Agribusiness Development Team, the 102nd Forward Surgical Team and the 744th Engineer Company, Route Clearance Patrol 46 were among the military units participating in the day's events.

At 23 years old, U.S. Army Spc. John Cowgill, of Riverton, a security force member for the 1-14th Illinois Agribusiness Development Team.

Those events of a decade ago had a deep impact on who he is and on the direction his life has taken.

"Ten years ago I never thought I would be spending this day in Afghanistan," said Cowgill. "I still feel anger over what happened, but I've learned that anger can be channeled toward helping people and making a difference. That is what I see today and that is what makes me proud to be here."

A ceremony at the Camp Wright dining facility began the day of remembrance. Two members of the Kunar PRT, who were in New York on the day of the terrorist attacks, shared their experiences with those who had gathered.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Darlene Croston, of Binghamton, N.Y., an administrative specialist with the Kunar PRT, was working in New York as a nanny for a member of the New York Fire Department who was killed that day.

Croston said sharing those experiences was an important part of the occasion.

"Ten years [later], it might be easy to forget why we are here," she said. "Just as with any loss, time dulls the pain. It is important that we remember our goals so this country does not become an incubator for that type of terrorism again."

The ceremony concluded as an American flag, which was previously flown aboard the USS New York, was passed solemnly between enlisted servicemembers representing different units and branches of service.

The Cpl. Raphael Arruda Fitness Center in Afghanistan was dedicated during a separate ceremony later in the day.

U.S. Army Cpl. Raphael Arruda, of South Ogden, Utah, a combat engineer with the 744th Engineer Company, Route Clearance Patrol 46, was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a combat patrol June 16.

Members of the 744th spoke of Arruda's love of physical fitness and said the dedication was a fitting tribute to the Soldier who grew up in Brazil and had recently received his U.S. citizenship.

U.S. Army Spc. Jonathan Hansen, of Layton, Utah, an operations specialist with the 744th, said his entire unit was behind the idea of the dedication.

"It started off as one person's idea, but everyone pitched in and it became a group effort," said Hansen. "All those who served with him will be happy to know his legacy is living on after we are gone. He would be very happy about this, but he would also be humbled. He would consider it a great honor."

A plaque bearing Arruda's name and the words "let's get swole" - a phrase he used to get others into the gym - was unveiled during the ceremony.

When night fell, residents of Camp Wright took to rooftops and high ground for an unobstructed view of the clear night sky. As illumination rounds lit the mountainside, someone spoke of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the ensuing War on Terrorism.

While many of the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of Camp Wright were well into their military careers on Sept. 11, 2001, others were just beginning their careers as junior-high students.

ANF Game Day Celebrates Farmers, Features Former Hawkeye Legends

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA - September 16, 2011 - Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) announced today that Farm Bureau members interested in attending the first America Needs Farmers (ANF) Game Day at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on Oct. 15 can register to win tickets at www.iowafarmbureau.com.  The sold-out Big Ten Conference game against Northwestern includes autographs by former Hawkeye legends, including Tim Dwight, Jared DeVries and Marv Cook, along with other special surprises.

"ANF Game Day is an important event for farmers in Iowa.  It's a chance to show the nation and a whole new group of consumers just how important farming is today.  We know that in less than a generation, the world's population will need 100 percent more food than we grow today.  Since there is only so much land to grow that food, farmers will have to embrace progress and diversity," says IFBF President Craig Lang.

Each member who wins the ANF Game Day prize will receive free tickets to the game, ANF merchandise, admission to special tailgating activities and an opportunity for autographs of Hawkeye Legends.

ANF, initiated in 1985 by former Iowa Hawkeye football coach Hayden Fry during the Farm Crisis, is embraced today by Hawkeyes' current head coach, Kirk Ferentz.

"Farming has changed considerably since the 1980's," said Lang. "The way we grow and raise food and energy today has changed dramatically, but so has our need. Much of the nation's innovation in renewable energy, medicine, building materials and diagnostic tools come from what we grow. The list continues to grow and so does our population, but the goal remains unchanged - making sure consumers have safe, wholesome food choices at the grocery store."

For a listing of rules and to register, click on www.iowafarmbureau.com by October 3. Winners will be notified within that week.  You must be a current member to win. To join Iowa Farm Bureau, visit www.iowafarmbureau.com.
