Ground Broken at Putnam for IMAX Theatre

The Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science recently started construction of its IMAX 3-D theatre. Over the next several months, the construction schedule will focus on earthwork and pouring foundations. Once the critical winter months are through, the construction team will have more information on the remainder of the construction schedule, including an opening date for the theatre.

Davenport Starts Administrator Search with New Panel

A 12-member panel has been formed to begin the search process for a new Davenport city administrator. Mayor Phil Yerington said he wants a new administrator by April 1. City to Host Input Session for Parking Garage

The city of Davenport will hold a public-input session on Wednesday, January 10, for the two parking garages that will be constructed downtown. The session, to be held at 7 p.m. in the Illinois/Ohio Rooms at the RiverCenter North, will cover traffic patterns, pedestrian ways, skywalks, and exterior and interior design.

Palmer College Nabs Grant for Expansion

Palmer College of Chiropractic was recently awarded a $1.7 million federal grant to assist in a major expansion of library and learning-resource facilities on its Davenport campus. The grant, which is the second major federal award for Palmer in recent months, was included in the final version of the Senate Labor, Health & Human Services appropriations bill.

DMA Foundation Receives $12 Million Dollar Gift

The largest single financial gift in the history of the Quad Cities was given to the Davenport Museum of Art Foundation earlier this month. The $12 million donation was received from the Figgie Foundation and will be used for construction, operations, and programming costs for the new museum, scheduled to open in downtown Davenport in the fall of 2003.

Nahant Marsh Designated Five Star Restoration Site

The Five Star Restoration Program has named Nahant Marsh in Davenport a Five Star Restoration Site. The program is organized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Fish & Wildlife Federation, the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, the National Association of Counties, and the Wildlife Habitat Council, and it supports restoration projects involving contributions from multiple and diverse partners.

Fire Guts Eldridge Business

A recent fire at Olson Engineering in Eldridge did substantial damage to the 27-year-old pins-and-bushings machining company. Two of the company's four buildings were gutted in a fire that took seven fire departments more than four hours to put out.

New Area Code Announced for Eastern Iowa

The Iowa Utilities Board is finalizing plans to make 563 the new area code for eastern Iowa, including the Quad Cities, Muscatine, Clinton, Elkander, and Decorah. Optional use will begin March 4, 2001, and mandatory use will start in September.
