COAL VALLEY, Ill. (March 15, 2016) – Current members of Niabi Zoo, along with those who become members by March 23, can be among the first to view the meerkat exhibit at the zoo during the annual Members-Only Egg Hunt on March 26.

Zoo gates will open at 9 a.m. and the last entry will be at 10 a.m. The 2-4 year old group will kick off the Egg Hunt at 10:30 a.m. and the 5-8 year old group will immediately follow and begin around 10:45 a.m. There will also be a scavenger hunt held for 9-12 year olds.

“The Zoo opens to the public April 11th, but we’re pleased to announce that zoo members will get a first glimpse of the new meerkat and porcupine exhibit on March 26,” said Dan Meates, interim director of Niabi Zoo. “The Egg Hunt is a free event for members. The day consists of candy, giveaways and free rides on the carousel and train!”

The meerkat exhibit features rockwork, much like the rocky areas where meerkats dwell in Africa. Guests will have a one-of-a-kind experience viewing these animals from a cave that is built under the rockwork, allowing viewing access into the underground lives of the meerkats.

The meerkats, like many other animals at the zoo,are part of a Species Survival Plan that is designed to conserve and protect endangered species. The zoo serves as “an arc” for these animals to guarantee their survival.

A female African crested porcupine, also part of the Species Survival Program, is housed with the meerkats and is a member of the rodent family. In the wild it lives in hilly, rocky habitats in sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and Italy.

Annual membership costs range from $35 to $105 based on family size and various additional perks. Visit NiabiZoo.com/Become-a-Member.aspx to learn more about becoming a member. New memberships and RVSPs for the Egg Hunt must be received by March 23 at 4 p.m.

To become a member and RSVP you can email membership@niabizoo.com or call 309-799-3482 ext. 237.
