WASHINGTON – Iowa’s U.S. Senators today announced their joint recommendations to the President of individuals to serve as U.S. Attorneys in the Northern and Southern districts of Iowa.

“These individuals have the necessary qualifications to effectively serve the public at the helm of the U.S. Attorney offices in Iowa. They have distinguished themselves with their legal education, professional experience and demonstrated leadership, and I’m glad to recommend them to the President for his consideration in filling the positions,” said Senator Chuck Grassley.

“I am pleased to recommend such accomplished individuals to serve as U.S. Attorneys in Iowa. They are all proven leaders who are well-qualified to take on these critically important positions within the Department of Justice. It is my hope that the President will give them the thoughtful consideration they deserve,” said Senator Joni Ernst.

Those recommended for selection for the Northern District are Peter E. Deegan Jr. of Cedar Rapids and Patrick J. Reinert of Cedar Rapids. Those recommended for the Southern District are Marc Krickbaum previously of Des Moines, Matthew C. McDermott of West Des Moines, and Alan R. Ostergren of Letts.

The senators said that every Iowan expressing interest in being named to a U.S. Attorney position was considered and interviewed by an independent panel for these recommendations.

U.S. Attorneys are the chief federal law enforcement officer in their jurisdictions and serve as the nation’s principal litigators under the direction of the Attorney General. They are appointed by and serve at the discretion of the President with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. President Donald Trump will nominate a U.S. Attorney for all of the 94 federal judicial districts in the country, including the two districts in Iowa, and those nominations will then be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee which is chaired by Grassley.
