Michael Sabel Claims $15,000 Top Prize In ‘Joker’s Wild’ Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa – A stop for coffee before work last week ended up being in a Davenport man’s favor as he received his coffee for free and won a big lottery prize.

Michael Sabel claimed the sixth of 10 top prizes of $15,000 available in the Iowa Lottery’s “Joker’s Wild” scratch game.

The 31-year-old said he stopped Thursday morning at Kwik Shop, 303 W. Locust St. in Davenport for a cup of coffee and when he went to pay, it ended up being free with his retailer loyalty card.

“I was like, ‘Oh, since I’m getting a free coffee I’ll just get some scratch tickets and that’s what happened,” Sabel told lottery employees Friday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Sabel, who works as an inventory manager, said he waited until he got home that night to scratch off his ticket and was surprised by what he saw.

“I second and third guessed it; read the instructions on it a couple of times and I was like, ‘Hey, that’s awesome!’” he said.

Sabel said he plans to save a majority of his winnings.

“I’m more of a saver than a spender,” he said.

Joker’s Wild is a $2 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and the number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery’s website, www.ialottery.com.
