Rite of Spring centennial performance this weekend!

Rite of Spring at 100 years

 

When Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was first performed a century ago there were riots in the theater and the landscape of orchestral music was changed forever. We at the Quad City Symphony Orchestra are very excited to be performing this seminal piece, paired with one of the most popular pieces in the orchestral canon, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

 

This weekend the Quad City Symphony Orchestra will also be announcing its Masterworks season for 2013-14 and accepting season renewals. If you are currently a season subscriber, you will be able to pick up your form at the concerts. Any orders returned with payment at the concerts will receive a free commemorative Quad City Symphony Orchestra travel mug, so be sure to bring your check books and credit cards with you!

 

This performance of Rite of Spring will complete Mark Russell Smith's cycle of Stravinsky ballet anniversaries that began with 2010's performance of the Firebird and followed in 2011 by Petrushka. To celebrate the performance of Mussorgsky's work, Bruce Walters, a Professor of Art at Western Illinois University, has created a series of drawings entitled "Pictures at an Exhibition." These works of art will be displayed in the RiverCenter from March 1-9, 2013. This series is Walters' interpretation of the music of Pictures at an Exhibition, influenced by descriptions of the artwork that originally inspired the music. Walters added a local feel to the works by placing Quad City area landmarks throughout the series. The series is online at www.walters-mussorgsky.info.

Central Performing Arts Center presents The Chordbuster Chorus

Central Performing Arts Center, DeWitt, Iowa, proudly presents The Chordbuster Chorus on March 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm.

The performing chorus is called The Chordbuster, a group of men who love to sing and harmonize in the barbershop style while entertaining audiences and putting smiles on the faces of their fans.

The Chordbuster Chorus and its Chapter quartets regularly entertain a wide variety of audiences. Perhaps you have heard them singing the National Anthem at local baseball games, caroling at their annual Christmas show and local nursing/retirement homes, delivering singing valentines to lovers of all ages, or in concert at their annual Spring show called "Holiday in Harmony." The Chordbusters also had the honor of performing for the Governor of Iowa, President Ronald Reagan and have shared the stage with the Quad City Symphony.

The Chordbusters' proudly support several charitable causes: The Harmony Foundation, the Davenport Family " programs for children, Toys for Tots, local school vocal music programs, and Quad City food pantries.

LIMBS @ RME HALL

Limbs took root in the Summer of 2011, the seedling of an impromptu collaboration between EDM maestro DJ Kage, freestyling MC Ty James and the psychedelic rock group, The Messy Blend, consisting of drummer Nick Jenkins and guitarists/bassists Travis Patten and Alex Fischels . The fivesome wasted no time establishing their chemistry and synthesizing their musical characters and influences into a danceable, funky and melodic sound that has stumped concert goers striving for classification. Creative tags such as "Funk-hop Jamtronica" have been tossed about, and the band has been compared to diverse acts ranging from MGMT and Joy Division to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Iggy and the Stooges. While their genre has been hard to pin down, their appeal has not. Limbs turns wallflowers into participants, and those in the front row into loyal fans. The sound is experimental, but the songs are catchy, accessible, deeply felt and range dynamically in energy. Limbs move in many moods, lyrically and musically. The fellas have been pulling audiences into the groove from Chicago to Des Moines over the past year with their high-energy live show, and long to see you soon.

The Mississippi Valley Blues Society presents The 2013 Mississippi Valley Blues Challenge

The first Mississippi Valley Blues Challenge will be held July 5, at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival. The first of three bands will start at 3 PM and each will perform 20?minute sets with 5 judges making a decision on which band is the best.

Bands within a 175 miles radius of the Quad Cities will be eligible to compete, but before a band can progress to the final round at the festival, they must first surmount a preliminary round on April 28, at The Muddy Waters, Bettendorf, IA, to decide on the top three bands for the final competition at the festival.

The winner earns the right to compete in the International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, January 21-January 25, 2014. The prize package also includes cash, travel expenses, and the opportunity to perform July 6, 2013 at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in Davenport, Iowa.

The deadline for applications is April 20.  All interested bands can find applications at www.mvbs.org.

MVBS Presents Bobby Messano Sunday March 10

The Mississippi Valley Blues Society will present guitarist extraordinaire Bobby Messano on Sunday, March 10th, at The Muddy Waters (1708 State Street, Bettendorf IA) at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $10, only $8 for Mississippi Valley Blues Society members.

Messano, hailing from New Jersey, is best known for touring for a year as Steve Winwood's guitarist as well as being the only guitarist with a featured solo on a Clarence Clemons' (Bruce Springsteen's sax player) release. He also was the lead guitarist for Frankie and The Knockouts and recorded with Peter Criss (of Kiss). Messano's latest release, in 2012, That's Why I Don't Sing The Blues, even made it through to the first round of a Grammy nomination.

We'll be catching Messano on his way to Nashville to record his new, but yet-to-be-named CD on March 19, which will feature Deanna Bogart (who will then tour with Messano as part of his band), Ivan Neville, Shaun Murphy, Jimmy Hall (the harp player for Wet Willy and Hank Williams Jr.) and maybe even Mr. Winwood himself?Messano said he's still working on that.

Quad City Wind Ensemble Concert Sunday March 3rd

The 27th season of the Quad City Wind Ensemble continues Sunday, March 3rd at 3:00pm. The theme of the concert is "The Women's Movement," music that focuses much-needed attention on the myriad contributions of women composers to the contemporary wind band repertoire

Conducted by Brian L. Hughes, the QCWE will perform works by Anne McGinty, Nancy Galbraith, Colette Hausey, Shelley Hanson and Julie Giroux. The concert will immediately be followed by a reception with free refreshments and homemade treats.
