ROCK ISLAND, IL (10/25/2011)(readMedia)-- Augustana College choral ensembles' work with local and regional high school choirs culminate in two separate concerts this week. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

From your area this includes:

Kaleigh Wall, a Junior from Eldridge, Ill., majoring in Art.

Lauren Reid, a Senior from Sherrard, Ill., majoring in Business Administration- Marketing/Communication Studies.

Rickey Rector, a Junior from Davenport, Iowa, majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

On Thursday, October 27, at 7 p.m., the Treble Choir Outreach Concert will feature Augustana's Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and the UT Singers of United Township High School. The concert will be held in Ascension Chapel (639 38th St.) on the Augustana campus.

United Township High School Choral Director Juliet Minard, a 1998 alumna of Augustana, is excited to bring her women's group to the college and share this experience with the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and director Dr. Michael Zemek. The two choirs will work together during the afternoon with both directors, preparing two joint choir selections for the evening concert.

Dr. Zemek believes both ensembles "have something to learn from one another...by listening to one another and ultimately performing together, we hope to grow and expand our understanding of how choral music can be used to bring people together in meaningful ways." He sees this as a great opportunity for members of the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble to model not only treble singing but also the value of singing in a choral ensemble. He hopes the United Township students leave "challenged and inspired to higher levels of musicianship and the desire to continue singing beyond high school."

On Friday, October 28, at 8 p.m., the Augustana Choir Fall Honors Choir Concert will feature the Augustana Choir under the direction of Dr. Jon Hurty, in addition to the Plainfield North High School Concert Choir and Lake Zurich High School Concert Choir. The concert will be held in Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave.). The two high school choirs will spend the day working on choral music and technique with Dr. Hurty and Dr. Zemek as well as rehearsing with the Augustana Choir.

The evening concert will offer a diverse and eclectic program of choral music. The selection "In Remembrance," to be sung by the combined choirs, was programmed in memory of the 9/11 tragedy and its 10th anniversary this fall. The Augustana Choir will include an improvisation as part of its program-an offering that has become signature to the group. Hurty is "excited about trying this new format of combined performance and outreach" and looks forward to working with these top high school choirs from the region.

2nd annual Peace Concert in Clinton on Sunday, October 30th

Gratitude, source of peace, is the theme for this year's ecumenical Peace Concert at Zion Lutheran Church, 439-3rd Ave. So., Clinton, on Sunday afternoon, October 30, beginning at 3 pm.

"As we approach the Thanksgiving season, we pause to give thanks for all that is and we receive peace in return," said Clinton Franciscan Sister Mary Smith, co-chair of the annual concert  sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis and Zion Lutheran Church. The concert is free and open to the public.

Ruth Blom, Associate in Ministry for Word and Service at Zion and co-chair of the Peace Concert, announced that six area congregations will be participating in this year's concert which will feature voice and bell choirs from three different churches.

Participating choirs include Zion Lutheran, St. Paul Lutheran and Faith Lutheran of Andover in addition to singers from Prince of Peace Catholic, Unity Center and the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton.

A special feature of the 2nd annual concert will be a solo organ performance by David Gaulrapp, organist at First United Presbyterian church, Clinton, and retired Coordinator of Instrumental and Vocal Music for the Clinton, Iowa Public Schools and Director of Bands for Clinton Senior High School.  He has also played organ recitals in Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria as well as in many area churches.

The massed choir will be directed by Dr. Michael Zemek, Assistant Professor of choral music education at Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., where he conducts the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and Ascension Singers, teaches music methods and conducting courses, supervises music education students, and advises the collegiate MENC and ACDA chapters. He came to Augustana after eight years of teaching choral music in Minnesota and Iowa. In addition to his responsibilities at Augustana, Dr. Zemek conducts the high school Youth Choir at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa.

Dr. Zemek received the Doctor of Education degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal, Instrumental, and Classroom Music Education, summa cum laude, from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota, and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota.

The massed choir will be featured singing "Jubilate Deo," "Peace I Give to You" and "The Lord is Beautiful."  The concert will also involve the audience in singing "This Is My Song," "Come, All You People" and "Beautiful Savior."

Promoting peace through music is not new. Song has been part of the history of change in human society from earliest time.

"Music has been part of the everyday life and struggle of people worldwide," said Janice Cebula OSF, president of the Clinton Franciscans. "It is a form of power that knows no boundaries. It has motivated individuals and nations to work together for change, freedom, equality. Music and song are often the first signs of growing community support in response to repression. And it is nonviolent."

"The unity generated by our community concert is a prime reason for our effort in presenting the annual concert," said Rev. Jennifer Henry, pastor of Zion Lutheran.

The sponsors chose October 30th for the concert because it is falls just after the international celebration of the "Spirit of Assisi" and at the beginning of the national celebration of Thanksgiving.

The "Spirit of Assisi" was the expression coined by the late Pope John Paul II to describe the October 27, 1986, gathering of leaders of all the world's religions in Assisi, Italy, home of St. Francis and St. Clare, which he convened.  According to observers, it served to unify those diverse leaders, calling all to community: a hallmark of the teaching of the 13th century Saint Francis known also for his love of music.

"Francis was not only a preacher, he was a poet," noted Cebula. "He wrote not only prayers that were poems, some of the first to be written in the vernacular Italian, but he composed melodies to go with them. "One of his most famous compositions is 'The Canticle of Creation.'  He recognized the power of music, poetry and drama to teach and inspire and his message was always peace. He is referred to as 'The Troubadour of God.'"

"The goal of the concert is to inspire, connect, and promote peace in the world through gratitude and music," explained Ruth Blom.  "Together we can make a difference! We are delighted that so many choirs and individual singers are planning to take part in this celebration of peace through music."

Besides Blom, Pastor Henry and Sister Smith, the event planning committee includes Clinton Franciscan Sisters Marilyn Shea and Hilary Mullany and Sallyann McCarthy and Laura Anderson, co-coordinators of the Clinton Franciscan Center for Active Nonviolence and Peacemaking.

ROCK ISLAND, IL (10/13/2011)(readMedia)-- The Augustana Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Daniel Culver, will open its season with the inventive Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 and Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 104, called the "London Symphony." The concert will take place on Saturday, October 15, at 8 p.m. in Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave). The Rachmaninoff concerto will feature Dr. Mary Neil, professor of music at Augustana, on piano.

The Augustana Symphony Orchestra is a full-size orchestra of approximately 75 members.

From your area this includes:

Anne VanSpeybroek, a Junior from Rock Island, Ill., majoring in Music Performance- Instrumental.

Ashley Finley, a Sophomore from Davenport, Iowa, majoring in Music Education Instrumental.

Nick Kendell, a Sophomore from Davenport, Iowa, majoring in Undecided.

Lindsey Sikorski, a First Year from East Moline, Ill., majoring in Undecided.

Adam Bengfort, a First Year from Davenport, Iowa, majoring in Undecided.

Abigail Jones, a Sophomore from Davenport, Iowa, majoring in Biology/Environmental Studies.

Peter Wiese, a Junior from Davenport, Iowa, majoring in Neuroscience/Mathematics.

Student-musician Tim Christiansen, a senior from Park Ridge, Ill., enjoys the orchestral part. "Rachmaninoff was infatuated with and mesmerized by orchestral textures-varying interactions between the orchestra and soloist. Sometimes they agree, disagree and dance with one another," said Christiansen.

Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto is one of his enduringly popular works and helped him gain fame as a concerto composer. This work was well received from its first performance and served as a sign that Rachmaninoff was no longer suffering from depression that had lasted several years.

Joseph Haydn composed 104 symphonies, the "London Symphony" being his last, and became known as the "Father of the Symphony" for his contribution to the development of this particular musical form.

Dr. Culver finds this Haydn symphony progressive for its time. "It is a transparent symphony-it requires great concentration and the full orchestra to be attentive to details," Culver said.

During the '70s, Lynyrd Skynyrd pushed southern rock into the mainstream. Embracing the term "redneck" as a badge of honor, the band not only sang nostalgically about times past but also subtly incorporated its social and political viewpoints, especially when it came to the unjust exploitation of the working man. For over thirty years, Lynyrd Skynyrd's music has been celebrated by a variety of fans, ranging from youngsters picking up a guitar for the first time and belting out the first riff of "Sweet Home Alabama" to famous musicians like Kid Rock and Travis Tritt.

"Nuthin Fancy: A Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd" meticulously replicates the stage performance of Lynryd Skynyrd, mastering every detail from the original band's clothing to its ripping piano and guitar solos. Each member of Nuthin Fancy has at least twenty years of musical experience, which has assisted them in collectively developing a sense of professionalism and unity unparalleled by other cover bands. "They sound so much like the real Skynyrd," commented one observer, "that I have to keep reminding myself they're not the real thing."

SKYNNY SKYNYRD is the best, most authentic Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band playing today. But don't take our word for it; Ronnie Van Zant's best friend, Gene Odom of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band, shares this opinion.  Gene Odom says, "Skynny Skynyrd Is THE BEST SKYNYRD SHOW he's seen and heard!"   Wow!   That statement blew us away, too.   Gene went down with the Freebird Plane in 1977 & has written three books about the band.  So, that was one heck of a compliment!

SKYNNY SKYNYRD performs all of Lynyrd Skynyrd's hits: Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, What's Your Name, Call Me The Breeze and Ronnie Van Zant's timeless classic that changed a generation and a nation forever, Freebird. The list goes on and on...Lynyrd Skynyrd's music has never been more popular and will never go out of style; SKYNNY SKYNYRD is a stunning re- creation of Lynyrd Skynyrd in both music and showmanship.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's music appeals to audiences of all ages: kids, parents, and grandparents can come together and enjoy the music that made southern and classic rock what it is today. The music of Lynyrd Skynyrd has always been mainstream and that will never change. That's why Lynyrd Skynyrd's music has been featured in over a thousand TV commercials, TV movies, major motion pictures and corporate ads all over the world. SKYNNY SKYNYRD delivers and energetic hit packed show that satisfies everyone's appetite for his or her favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song and personality.
And SKYNNY SLYNYRD will be performing that show at the River Music Experience's REDSTONE ROOM on Saturday October 15th.Doors open at 8pm and the Show starts at 9PM.  Like I said, this is a Show The Entire Family Could Enjoy Together.   A Rock N' Roll 101 Class of some of America's Greatest Songs performed just like Skynyrd did it in 1977.    Classic Skynyrd T-Shirts & CDS will be on sale at this show too!   Tickets are just $5 bucks.   A Bargain!

ROCK ISLAND, IL (09/29/2011)(readMedia)-- More than six months have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the people of Japan are still trying to rebuild their lives. To reverently remember and show sympathy for the Japanese people, members of the Augustana College Symphonic Band performed a disaster relief concert on Saturday, September 24.

Free will donations were collected at the concert. Donations totaled $1,550, and funds raised will be distributed through the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan.

"It is easy to forget about such disasters, yet much of Japan is still uninhabitable-much remains to be done," said Augustana's Director of Bands James Lambrecht, who has programmed select musical works related to Japan in order to expose the students and Augustana community to Japanese musical culture.

From your area, the students involved included:

Anne VanSpeybroeck, a Junior from Rock Island, Ill. majoring in Music Performance.

Jennifer Youngs, a Senior from Taylor Ridge, Ill. majoring in Psychology/Political Science.

Gaetano Iaccarino, a Senior from Davenport, Iowa majoring in Anthropology/Music.

Grace Drenth, a Junior from Davenport, Ill. majoring in Psychology.

"This was a celebration of music, and it was also a meaningful gesture to the people of Japan that Augustana College is committed to helping those in need-no matter where they live." said Augustana senior Gaetano Iaccarino, Davenport, Iowa.

Augustana's music department shares a special connection with Japan. Lambrecht departed for his second guest residency at the prestigious Musashino Academia Musicae, Tokyo, only two days after the concert. While in Japan, Lambrecht will conduct the Musashino Academia Musicae Wind Ensemble with music programmed in response to the devastating events.
