Brian Blasik hits second grand slam of the season, Rio Ruiz finishes a triple shy of the cycle

GENEVA, Ill. (JULY 7, 2013) - For the first time this season, three Quad Cities River Bandits homered in the same game, as catcher Roberto Pena, second baseman Brian Blasik and third baseman Rio Ruiz each went deep among the visitors' 13 hits in a 12-5 victory over the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Sunday afternoon.

Quad Cities (12-5 second half, 50-36 overall) had its highest run total since a season-high 17 runs against Great Lakes on April 30 and won for the 13th time in 17 meetings with Kane County (4-13, 34-49). Pena tied the game in the second inning on a one-out home run to the picnic deck in left field off right-hander Tayler Scott (4-4). The home run was Pena's fourth of the season and second against the Cougars. He is 20-for-49 (.408) in 12 games against Kane County.

Quad Cities took the lead in the third inning, as left fielder Dan Gulbransen and designated hitter Jesse Wierzbicki hit back-to-back RBI doubles for a 3-1 lead. Meanwhile, Cain held the Cougars off the board through the fifth inning, retiring 13 of 14 batters in one stretch and posting a season-high six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. He was charged with four runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks.

In the sixth inning, Ruiz hit a one-out single, and shortstop Austin Elkins drew a two-out walk to chase Scott. Right-hander Armando Rivero entered and walked first baseman Jobduan Morales to load the bases for Blasik, who hit his second home run - and second grand slam - of the season on a line drive over the left-field fence, extending the Quad Cities lead to 7-1.

The Cougars tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with third baseman Jeimer Candelario hitting an RBI double, and two more runs scoring when center fielder Jordan Scott threw a ball into the third-base stands after catching a fly ball. Kane County closed within 7-5 in the seventh inning, as right-hander Gera Sanchez yielded a sacrifice fly to Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach. Left-hander Mitchell Lambson got the final out of the inning and worked 1 1/3 scoreless frames.

Ruiz leading off the eighth inning and added an RBI double in the ninth inning to finish a triple shy of the cycle. Wierzbicki added a two-run double in the ninth inning. With a 12-5 lead, right-hander Chia-Jen Lo retired all three hitters he faced.

Quad Cities pitches second shutout in four games to snap four-game losing streak at Kane County

GENEVA, Ill. (JULY 6, 2013) - Right-hander Mike Hauschild pitched a career-best seven shutout innings, and center fielder Teoscar Hernandez, left fielder Dan Gulbransen and first baseman Jobduan Morales each had two hits for the Quad Cities River Bandits in a 5-0 victory over the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Saturday night.

Hauschild (6-1) did not allow a baserunner until a third-inning, one-out single by Cougars catcher Carlos Escobar and faced just two batters over the minimum while limiting Kane County to three hits and never allowing a runner to reach second base. He worked four separate 1-2-3 innings Saturday and has pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings in his last two starts.

Quad Cities (11-5 second half, 49-36 overall) scored in each of the second through fifth innings against Cougars right-hander Jose Rosario (0-5), who allowed all five runs on six hits and four walks with just one strikeout. The visitors took a second-inning lead after second baseman Austin "Catfish" Elkins worked a two-out walk, stole second base and scored on a double by Morales.

In the third inning, Hernandez hit a leadoff single, and right fielder Jordan Scott lined a double to left-center field. The throw to home plate was too late to get Hernandez and allowed Scott to move to third base, past which Cougars catcher Carlos Escobar threw the ball for an error, allowing Scott to score on the play for a 3-0 Quad Cities lead.

In the fourth inning, Elkins worked the second of his three walks with one out, and Rosario proceeded to walk Morales and second baseman Brian Blasik to load the bases. Hernandez then hit into a fielder's choice that brought home the run. In the next inning, Gulbransen, who earned his first Midwest League hit with a first-inning single, hit a leadoff triple to center field and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Rio Ruiz that made it 5-0.

Kane County had its three singles scattered against Hauschild in the third, fourth and fifth innings. None advanced into scoring position, but the Cougars drew two eighth-inning walks against right-hander Daniel Minor, who moved the runners to second and third bases with a wild pitch but struck out the side his first inning of work since June 23. Right-hander Chia-Jen Lo had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning and was the final pitcher in the River Bandits' second shutout win in the last four games and first road shutout of the season.

Saturday's victory snapped the River Bandits' four-game losing streak in Kane County and also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount on Sunday, July 7. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Sunday, July 7.

Roberto Pena ties a career high with four hits and leads Quad Cities with three RBIs

GENEVA, Ill. (JULY 5, 2013) - Catcher Roberto Pena tied a career high with four hits, and right-hander Jordan Jankowski was the first Quad Cities River Bandits pitcher to toss seven innings in a start this season, but the team could not hold a lead for more than a half-inning in an 8-7 road loss to the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Friday night.

The River Bandits (10-5 second half, 48-36 overall) quickly lost a 1-0, first-inning lead and a 3-2, sixth-inning lead but took their largest advantage, 6-3, into the bottom of the eighth inning to put Jankowski in line for a win. Right-hander Juri Perez allowed two walks and a hit within the first four batters to load the bases with one out. Quad Cities right-hander John Neely entered and proceeded to allow all three inherited runners to score with a walk, hit batter, and a game-tying single by third baseman Giuseppe Pappacio.

In a 6-6 tie with one out and the bases loaded, Cougars second baseman Gioskar Amaya dropped a hit just past first base down the right-field line and reached second base for a two-run double that gave Kane County an 8-6 lead. Neely (2-5) got the next two batters but was charged with two earned runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Trailing, 8-6, in the ninth inning, Quad Cities assembled a two-out rally against right-hander Justin Amlung. Designated hitter Jesse Wierzbicki was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on defensive indifference and scored on Pena's third RBI and fourth single - matching his first career four-hit game Aug. 27, 2011 with Lexington. But left fielder Dan Gulbransen grounded to second base for the final out.

The River Bandits took their first lead when center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit the team's first leadoff home run of the season against Cougars left-hander Brian Smith, who set down the next 10 batters in order. The Cougars answered against Jankowski with center fielder Albert Almora's one-out triple and first baseman Dan Vogelbach's two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of Kane County (4-11, 34-47) until the sixth inning, when River Bandits right fielder Jordan Scott drew a leadoff walk and scored on shortstop Carlos Correa's game-tying double to left-center field that chased Smith. Right-hander Lendy Castillo entered and allowed Pena's go-ahead single with one out to give Quad Cities a 3-2 lead. But Almora slapped a game-tying home run to left field on Jankowski's first pitch of the bottom of the sixth innning.

In a 3-3 tie starting the eighth inning, Castillo walked Correa, Wierzbicki singled, and Pena hit his second go-ahead RBI single of the night. Two batters later, first baseman Jobduan Morales grounded a two-run double up the first-base line. Castillo walked the next two batters to load the bases with one out, but Hernandez grounded into an inning-ending double play to keep the River Bandits' lead at 6-3.

Quad Cities has lost its last four games in Kane County after winning the first five meetings at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. River Bandits right-hander Mike Hauschild (5-1) will try to stop the skid against Cougars right-hander Jose Rosario (0-4) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jesse Wierzbicki has three hits for Quad Cities in first loss in last seven games against Kane County

GENEVA, Ill. (JULY 4, 2013) - The Kane County Cougars were on the scoreboard before the Quad Cities River Bandits recorded an out in the bottom of the first inning Thursday night, and the home team never let the visitors closer than two runs the rest of the night in a 7-4 Independence Day victory at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark the snapped the River Bandits' five-game winning streak.

Quad Cities (10-4 second half, 48-34 overall) had won the last six meetings with Kane County (3-11 second half, 33-47 overall) to open an 11-2 lead in the season series, but the Cougars had the upper hand almost from the start.

After Cougars right-hander Felix Pena worked a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, River Bandits right-hander Juan Minaya (1-2) walked and hit the first two batters in order. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach grounded a double down the third-base line that gave Kane County a 2-0 lead. A ground ball moved Vogelbach to third base, and shortstop Marco Hernandez had an infield single to second base that brought home Vogelbach for a 3-0 margin.

In the next half inning, the River Bandits got a leadoff single by first baseman Jesse Wierzbicki, followed walks to three of the next four batters to force in a run. But Pena struck out second baseman Austin Elkins and retired center fielder Teoscar Hernandez on a flyout to center field to strand the bases loaded with a 3-1 lead.

After Minaya allowed three runs on four hits, four walks and two hit batters in three innings, left-hander Mitchell Lambson started the bottom of the fourth inning. He gave up a one-out infield single and hit batter before Vogelbach and third baseman Jeimer Candelario hit consecutive RBI singles to make it 5-1. Lambson then retired seven straight batters to finish three innings of work.

Wierzbicki had a team-leading three hits - all singles in his first three at-bats - including an RBI single with two outs in the fifth inning to close the lead to 5-2. That set up the last time Quad Cities brought the tying run as far as home plate. Left-hander Nathan Dorris (3-3) walked left fielder Dan Gulbransen before getting third baseman Rio Ruiz to hit into a bases-loaded, inning-ending fielder's choice.

Cougars second baseman Gioskar Amaya finished a triple shy of the cycle and capped a three-hit game by hitting an eighth-inning, leadoff home run against right-hander Jamaine Cotton that extended the lead to 6-2. Left fielder Reggie Golden hit a double and scored on a ground-ball double play for a 7-2 Cougars advantage.

Right-hander Dillon Maples allowed a ninth-inning, two-run double by Teoscar Hernandez in the final three innings to earn his first save.

Quad Cities will continue its only scheduled five-game road series of the season on Friday night at Kane County. River Bandits right-hander Jordan Jankowski (3-1) will face Cougars left-hander Brain Smith (2-3).

Shortstop is first-ever position player selected to the game during his River Bandits season

DAVENPORT, Iowa (JULY 1, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits shortstop Carlos Correa was selected by fans for the final roster spot on the World Team roster for the 2013 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, set for Sunday, July 14, at Citi Field in New York. The Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, native is the first position player to make the game in the same year he appeared for the Midwest League club.

For the first time in the All-Star Futures Game's 15-year history, fans determined the final player on both the U.S. and World Team rosters by casting their votes in the All-Star Sunday Futures Finalists ballot. Major League Baseball announced Correa's selection Monday afternoon. He is one of three current Midwest Leaguers selected to the game, as he joins Beloit pitcher Michael Ynoa, of the Oakland Athletics, on the World Team; Bowling Green pitcher Taylor Guerreri, of the Tampa Bay Rays, is on the U.S. Team.

The 18-year-old Correa was the No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Astros in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. He was the youngest player in the 2013 Midwest League All-Star Game, which he started at shortstop for the Western Division All-Stars, June 18 at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio. He is currently third in the Midwest League with a .323 batting average and fifth with a .408 on-base percentage. He is also third in batting average among Astros minor leaguers with full-season affiliates. Rated by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Astros minor league system entering the season, he was the Quad Cities Player of the Month in May, when he assembled a career-high 10-game hitting streak, held a .349 average and had 18 RBIs in 22 games. In his final 21 games in June, Correa hit for a .422 average with two home runs, 13 RBIs and a .578 slugging percentage.

This season, two former River Bandits - both from the 2011 Midwest League Championship team - have already been selected for the All-Star Futures Game. Outfielder Oscar Taveras and infielder Kolten Wong will play for the World and U.S. Teams, respectively, for a second consecutive year.

The last player selected for the All-Star Futures Game in the same season he played for Quad Cities was St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez in 2011. Martinez was promoted to the advanced Class-A Palm Beach Cardinals before being named to the World roster for the game in Phoenix, Ariz. He threw one scoreless inning in a 6-4 U.S. victory.

Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller was the last River Bandit selected for the All-Star Futures Game while on the Quad Cities roster. Miller pitched for the U.S. in the 2010 game in Anaheim, Calif., and worked two-thirds of a scoreless inning in a 9-1 U.S. victory.

The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is now in its 15th year, features the top Minor League prospects competing in a nine-inning contest as part of Taco Bell All-Star Sunday. The U.S. Team leads the all-time series, 8-6. The game will begin at 1 p.m. Central Daylight Time July 14 and can be viewed live on ESPN2, ESPN2 HD and MLB.com.
